Can't believe this - it seems to have happened so quickly.  He was only 59.

I'll post a bit more after tea

very sad news, i always liked him

but can i just be the first to say, first the galloway stitch-up,then david kelly, now this?

jutl

This is terrible news. He was an immensely talented man and a rare politician  in that he traded career for principle.

ccab

"Big Tony says you gotta answer for the dissent."

wasn't he on his way back inas well? i think i read he was on side with brown and stood a good chance of coming back to cabinet when blair leaves.

Shocking news, he was one of the few gifted politicians with integrity.  Sad to hear this.

Artemis

blimey, they don't go in the order they should.

Big loss to British politics.

It's no age to go, is it? My dad's 58. As you've all said- a shame. He came across as a man of real integrity and principle around the time of the Iraq war.

morgs

A real shock, being so young.  Seemed to me to be a man of principles, all-too-rare in today's politicians.

mayer

I can't say I ever liked the man, his personality, his politics or his attitude, but 59 is awfully young to die so my condolences to his family.

Sorry for starting the thread, then leaving it for something trivial.  Just been watching stuff about him on TV.  Doesn't matter what he did in his private life, what he did as an MP was what really mattered.

A real political heavyweight with genuine integrity as noted above.  Made a real stand during the Iraq war by refusing to toe the party line and acting on his beliefs by resigning from the cabinet, even though it seemed like it would terminally effect his chances of getting a high profile "career" cabinet position ever again.  This didn't matter to him - doing what was right was his only consideration.

I am really shocked by this horrible news.

imitationleather

What a shock.

When him being taken to hospital was reported on Channel 4 news they said no announcements were going to be made "until his family had been consulted". That certainly sent the alarm bells ringing for me but it was still an unpleasant surprise to come on here and read the thread title.

As everyone's said, very sad news.

Morgan

He was just satirising the media reaction to politicians dying etc etc

Ambient Sheep

Fuck's sakes that is so SAD.  I don't think I've been so upset over a famous person's death since John Peel.

terminallyrelaxed

That is a shame. What is it about politicians with principles dying young? We've got Howards and Becketts coming out of our ears, and yet we keep losing guys like John Smith and Cook.

Santa's Boyfriend

Having principles must put a lot of strain on MPs, maybe that's why they die early whereas the ones that don't have them live on.

Morgan

Serves him right for being such a leftie anti-war do-gooder anyway.

I'm really sad to hear this, for all the reasons people have already said.  A man who puts his principles above career success is all too rare in politics.  He stood up for his principles with passion, dignity, and style - one of the few politicians I felt to be trustworthy.  Certainly one of the few who could challenge the government with any credibility.  What a shame.

RIP Mr Cook.

Mo Mowlam is in hospital too in a critical condition.  I'd be so sad if she died, she was the best we had in Norn Ireland.

Pinball

What an amazing coincidence that an anti-war politician dies. Like David Kelly, expect a cover-up.

jonholyfield

I'm very sad

He was a  fantastic politician. And left wing. I m absurdly upset about this.

Di and Dodi  yeah sad but so what,

One of our few icons of the left?

I mourn

Alberon

The way they're treating the coverage of Mo Mowlem's condition it does sound terminal to me, sadly.

Robin Cook's death was a shock. Damn shame too. Why is it that the reasonably good ones go soon and bastards live forever?

And it also means the loss of one of the last funny jokes on Dead Ringers too.

jonholyfield

You might not like him but he was one of the last socialist poiticianns. I  regret his passing.

Purple Tentacle

Only just found out about this.  What a bloody shame.

Sadness

Ian Paisley out-lived him.....?? What's up with that!!!!!!
He was really cool on HIGNFY,  a real shame.

And who will Andrew Neil get on next time Diane Abbott or Michael Portillo can't make it?  He was bloody good on that programme a few weeks ago.

This really does sadden me.  Fucking shame.  As you say, why the fuck can't Paisley go.

Mind you, I don't believe all the conspiracy theories, not this time, unless they knew that he was about to reveal something that we didn't even have a CLUE about, and what the hell would that be, given that we've heard most of what (we think) he had to say anyway.  Not the right timing.

I wonder what his ex-wife will have to say in his memory?

Sadness

My dear "Ambient Sheep" are you implying that Al-Queda could infiltrate the most northern point of a Scottish mountain.....?

He is a great loss and a true gentleman in his beliefs and ethics.

The good always die young and hey I REALLY liked him and he was ginger!!
That says a LOT!! R.I.P Mr.Cook.....

No, but other people were implying that Tony Blair / MI5 / whoever had infiltrated said mountain, if you care to read the rest of the thread.

I was saying that I *didn't* believe that.

Sadness
