I honestly thought it was short for OnlyFannys. I thought it was only for fannys.

I for one, am glad they will. I take no joy in knowing some odious little shit is making what I make in a decade every month , "empowering" themselves by smashing a Dildo up their twat. Good luck with your self assessment and next year's tax pay on you cretin.

Then again, I'm just bitter that I can't do the same as I'm a big ugly bloke with no twat, other than the one in the mirror.

Who wants to help me write an integration between Twitch's bits and subscription payments for Hot Tub Streamers and a "members only" monthly discord channel, for morally ambiguous Women (and some Men)?

I know fuck all about it, but it's just a paid porn site isn't it?

Not exactly. From my experience, it was always spoken of as being somewhat distinct from just "porn", and specifically reeled in more average people using contemporary social media feminist terminology. It very quickly became socially acceptable and wasn't even considered something you had to hide, really.

It's one of those things that, in theory, is a fine idea - I think I even wrote here around the time of the celebrity iCloud leak that we'll probably move towards a society where nudes are no longer seen as controversial - but was spearheaded and monopolized by ... well, this guy:

I'm not sure what exactly the end-goal is with this move, but what it will do is retroactively dirty the contributions from a lot of people who were led to believe it was empowering.

no idea about the empowering side of thing but i'd say people losing their source of income from one day to the next is bad

They could always subsidise their career with an industry recognised sideline,  empower by sucking off a taxi driver in a railway tunnel.

There are already big name alternatives to OnlyFans, arent there? Just For Fans, etc. I went and checked the twitter for JFF to see if they had referenced this, and they've already put out a statement saying how much more integrity they have, silly buggers.

I've seen plenty of testimonials

That must have cost quite a bit?

Chedney Honks

Isn't it also that there was a lot of dodgy material on there? I really don't know understand how they can even stay online when they acknowledge that there's distribution of that kind of shit on there. I understand that the ECB may have invested heavily but the law is the law.

Good time for someone to set up something for the mass exodus. Who wants to go in on this, how difficult could it be?

Only Fannies?

thundarrshirt

Back to throwing coins at lingerie models in Next catalogues and getting furious when they refuse to go on a date with me then, I suppose.

As has been noted elsewhere, this is shit for the people reliant on the platform (as many sex worker, and people who became as much, did during the pandemic) in much the same way the ongoing criminalisation of sex work in general is. Pushes people to the margins of society, forced to throw in with scumbags, etc. Similar thing happened with Patreon a little while back, which was mostly at PayPal's behest https://www.dailydot.com/irl/is-paypal-sex-negative/

Isn't that the only reason people go to OnlyFans nowadays?

ETA: very few people make a shitload of money on OnlyFans. It's not as lucrative as you think.

Increasingly I feel like OnlyFans is a pyramid scheme for getting your pussy out. There must be 0.1% of people on there who do okay out of it. It's not empowering to get below minimum wage for sex work. Or for any work for that matter. See Twitch, see Uber, see Amazon Flex, see Deliveroo. You've got your small percentage who earn a living, your smaller percentage who do really well, but the real money is made by the tech bros who made the app. Meanwhile the vast majority of people who actually produce content or provide labour get a pittance and no rights whatsoever. And we're meant to find this inspiring.

gilbertharding

They've done this because they think that the kind of people who would sell their own grandmothers might be put off investing by a site which shows rude things, right? That is quite funny.

Yeah, why specifically are Visa and MasterCard so anti any suggestion that (shock, horror) their services might be used to pay for anything to do with sex?

The irony is that from what I've heard illicit brothels take card because they just register themselves as selling something else and nobody ever checks.

Americans can still buy a gun with a credit card, although some companies block gun sales (including PayPal, after the departure of libertarian founder Peter Thiel) - if they find out. It's all down to right-wing Americans who want to make it harder to buy porn and easier to buy guns.

Exactly. And the consensus is that many OF creators will do the same, however V/MC's sanctions against those caught are strong enough (see the Twitter link I posted yesterday) to scare off OF itself, even if it fatally damages their bottom line.

Great link, thanks Z.

I presume the people doing well from porn on Only Fans are the big pornstars who have found another way of making money, I imagine this will have a real impact on them, especially after having earned less during the lockdowns.

Will porn studios benefit from this though as people who were subscribed to a load of big pornstars on OnlyFans will sign up to their websites instead? Or is the average person who subscribes to a load of big pornstars on OnlyFans already signed up to lots of porn sites.

You'd be surprised - there's been quite a bit reporting about this and going from memory, The Daily Beast have run a lot of articles. One example was a former nurse, who quit her job after she was told by her hospital to get rid of her OF account, at the time of the article, she was making over $50,000 a month (sure it was well over).

Where the first rung on a pyramid scheme is doing a revenge porn against yourself. The vast majority of those smaller accounts are just driving traffic to the sight/increasing the brand visibility - in order to "do okay" you'd have to absolutely plaster the internet with your face and name to drive traffic to OnlyFans unless you're famous enough for people to seek you out already.

OnlyFans just junking producers it baited in, with the media obediently in tow crowing about empowerment, is so OTT grotesque I hope it changes attitudes to gig work as a whole. But instead we'll probably get allegedly left wing people talking about "mobility" and "agility" and "flexibility" in dynamic job markets. Everything is about personal choice, agency, consent, blah fucking blah know your place plebs.

jamiefairlie

You forgot to throw "sex positive" in there too. Getting society to stop objectifying women is too difficult, so let's pretend it's empowering instead and we'll all feel better about it. As long as money is being made then it has to be good for society, right?
