Another reason to mourn the loss of Sean Lock.

QuoteThe UK's pig producers are warning that a shortage of workers is causing a surplus of pigs to be stuck at farms.

Trade body the National Pig Association (NPA) said some abattoirs were running 25% below usual capacity.

"If the government doesn't do something soon there will be a lot of perfectly healthy pigs on farms that will have to be destroyed," said Zoe Davies, chief executive of the NPA.

So, in short, if these pigs aren't killed they're going to have to be killed.

QuoteEach week, the number of excess pigs is growing by 15,000, the NPA said.

The shortage of workers in processing plants means they are unable to take in as many pigs to process as they normally would - resulting in too many pigs on farms.

For some strange reason not a lot of people want to slaughter pigs.

QuoteThe NPA, which represents 80% of the UK's pig producers, said its members had "tried desperately" to recruit people.

"They've upped wages but there are a good proportion of people that left after Brexit and you can't just fill those jobs with thin air," Ms Davies said.

The NPA said that the wasted meat from the surplus of pigs which could have gone into the food supply chain, will result in the UK's food sector having to import more from the EU.

"We have a good supply of willing people in other countries who do want to come and want to work and they should be allowed to do that," Ms Davies added.

Maybe encourage a kind of PYO like with strawberries. You know how you see a sign as your driving around the country, "Ooo, PYO pig! Shall we?". Obviously no eating a sneaky one as you're going round.

Reminds me of that EEC 'Pig Mountain' we used to have in the 80s.

Get the guy on the Mr Porkys package all boozed up and then tell him you've just seen his wife walking out with a really swathy pig

Ok, I've given up trying to come up with a functioning Brexit/gammon joke and will instead suggest that as pigs are said to be a highly intelligent animal why not kill two birds with one stone and teach some of them to drive delivery trucks.

Sshh! For christ's sake keep it down. We don't want to put off any CaBbers from doing this important work. The word is process.

JaDanketies

maybe they could forcibly create fewer of these sentient beings. I don't see the point of making an exponentially-increasing protein mountain made from intelligent species and complaining that nobody will extinguish the consistent parts for you. Other people have had to change the balance of their jobs recently, too.

Flog the excess off to Eton college as high quality escorts

I've just battered these 15,000 excess pigs to death. Took me less than 20 minutes.

Innocent days. More time has passed between now and Rebecca Loos masturbating a pig on channel 5 than passed between the building of the pyramids and the birth of Leonard Da vinci

Why don't they just make it look like the 15,000 pigs died by accident

wash the floor and leave it looking really wet and put a table with a sharp corner in the room. It'll be fine so long as no one tells a fictional television detective about it

Can't they use people in jail to do this work? Prisons are full of murderers so butchering a few thousand pigs wouldn't be too much of a stretch for them. Not sure how this will fit in with their rehabilitation but desperate times call for desperate measures.

This whole issue is an example of how stupid bonkers Britain has become. Think about it. If you make chops and sausages out of a pig he's not going to survive that, is he? So what's the point of killing them first? I reckon slaughterhouses have been playing us all for fools. What a racket they've got going on, its money for nothing when they'll cark it anyway. Just send them to the butchers as is and let nature take its course

It'll help them get it out of their system.
