thank you GB News for being the only major news outlet to have the cajones to cover this important story #justiceforchubs

The story has been covered by outlets such as the Mail, but perhaps one reason that it's not getting more coverage is that other venues have previously cancelled bookings for Brown in similar circumstances in 2019... 2018.... 2017... 2016... 2015... you get the idea.

Back in 2005, one union called for a ban on Brown playing a Newcastle venue, https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2005/jun/18/humanrights.arts. Going from memory, that did happen over decade later, but that was overturned a couple of years later.

The only real difference is that with this latest story, an 'anti-woke' agenda is being incorporated and people are falling for it and not looking in context of what's been happening previously.

The Sheffield City Trust venue has decided to cancel a performance by comedian Roy "Chubby" Brown

Sheffield City Trust is not a venue, it is a charity that manages multiple entertainment venues, leisure centres and golf courses in Sheffield.

QuoteThe decision by one venue - which I understand is publically funded - to cancel a performance by a comedian has been spun by GB News and similar as people telling us what to think, censorship etc.

It's not one venue. There is an element of telling us what to think in the way the Trust's mealy-mouthed statement is phrased: "We don't believe this show reflects Sheffield City Trust values," basically means "we don't like him and neither should you if you have acceptable moral standards".

It is publicly owned, hence its finances are in a shocking state: https://www.examinerlive.co.uk/news/local-news/inquiry-could-launched-sheffield-world-18910253, so you'd think they'd be delighted with a show as cheap to put on and profitable as this, especially as what's the betting that the unspecified number of complaints that led to his cancellation came from soft southern bastards who only live in Sheffield during term time?

They go on about their "ambition that our leisure, culture and entertainment venues are inclusive for all in Sheffield". Presumably the tickets for this show were available to all (over 18s)? If so, what does 'inclusive for all' mean in this context? That every show in all of their venues has to be something that nobody will dislike or feel alienated by?

QuotePeople tweeting "if you don't like a comedian, don't buy a ticket" and ignoring that venues cancelling comics is hardly new.

What is the argument against 'if you don't like x, don't attend?' Previously if there was any conflict of this nature, the act wouldn't be booked in the first place. But Chubby's only had a high profile in live British comedy for 30 years, so it must have come as a shock when Sheffield City Trust heard what his act contained.

QuoteYes Craig, a venue cancelling a comedian is just like the way people are treated in North Korea, I'm sure any people who have escaped from North Korea would agree. You melon.

Hyperbole, a popular pursuit on the internet, as much here as anywhere.

QuoteBy the logic of "if people want to buy tickets what's the problem" it would be ok to have a four hour orgy where people could buy tickets to watch as long as enough people did so.

And so it is, why wouldn't it be? As long as you've got your Sex Establishment Licence, everyone is over 18 and knows what to expect before they enter (hoho), go for your life.

QuoteI see the GB News tweet was worded to not make it clear the venue cancelled the comedian.

That's because it wasn't, it was the City Trust, the charity that manages multiple entertainment and sports venues in Sheffield, as is made clear in the news article that you linked to. Presumably the venue booked him, but it's the Trust that's unbooking him?

QuoteIf GB News was really that bothered about free speech, it would report on the many places around the world where free speech really is at risk.

Well, it is called GB News, and I gather it has done a fair bit on China and Russia. But if they did take your suggestion seriously this would effectively amount to GB News doing lots of reporting on how awful Islamic countries are, and if they did that I suspect your lot would just double down on the 'GB News is a cesspit' hyperbole.

You can't even get up on a stage and propagate harmful racial and gender stereotypes anymore. It's political wokeness gone mad.

Mr Banlon

The Sheffield City Trust venue has decided to cancel a performance by comedian Roy "Chubby" Brown in January 2022, saying:
"He'll probably be dead by then."

What is the argument against "if a venue or organisation don't like a performer, they shouldn't be forced to hire them"?

DrGreggles

If a racist venue chose not to book a PC performer, I'd still agree that it's up to them.

To be honest, I'd be more confused with the concept of a racist venue.
A Wetherspoons in Millwall?

jobotic

Perhaps Sheffield city Trust have some non-white employees that they don't want to have to listen to a load of racist shit.

Still if they don't like it they should use up some annual leave, right Autopsy?

Of course AT is defending Chubby Brown. Of course he is.

Of course I am. Someone I don't like and would never go and see.

Nobody forced the venue to hire him. Work out what "your values" are and only ever book people who correspond to them, fair enough, if a bit pathetic. He was already booked, presumably in a time when the "values" of the venue weren't set in stone.

Goldentony

can we have a closer look at that guys hair

Oh shitting hell, he's trending on Twitter. I'm not going to click the link because it's Erev Rosh Hashana and I'm not going to ruin it.

Listen if you dont want to go to the Klan rally you don't have to go.

king_tubby

So this venue should be forced to put on 'Roy' Chubby Brown? Forced? Sounds like the kind of thing they do in North Korea.

there's already a thread about this like two threads down

This one predates t'other one, which started in GB before being moved here - also Fambo went to a fair bit of effort in the op, so fair play on them!

You can read fake Chubby's heartwarming life story on his website.
QuoteBorn and raised in Billingham near Middlesborough Gary left school at 16 years old to become a full time Lithographic printer and spent the next 7 years in full time employment,
In 1997 at 23 years old Gary went to Tenerife on holiday for 2 weeks and one night Gary was given an opportunity to go onstage to sing a couple of songs and after copious amounts of alcohol, the 2 songs tuned into 15 minutes of 'off the cuff' made up comedy with 2 songs sang in his own unique madcap style.
After an invite from a bar owner,it was time for Gary to move to his new life in the sun.
The following 9 years Gary enjoyed the Holiday lifestyle and at the same time turned his hand to many forms of entertaining including Party DJ-Foam Party DJ-Comedy Compere-Hosting night excursions including playing the part of Host 'WEE WILLY GOBSTOPPER' at the popular Adults excursion The 'PYGAMA PARTY,The headmaster at the 18-30 excursion 'SKOOL DISCO' and the leading part of 'CAPTAIN REDBLOOD' at the family show 'PIRATES ATTACK' Tenerife.
finally Gary spent the last 3 years in Tenerife doing what he does best..stand up comedy entertaining the crowds as Gary Gobstopper 'Blue and Unstoppable'.
And that's just the start! He claims he's a club manager who uses the disguise so people don't know it's him performing.
