was it time trumpet that had that sketch where a group of asian blokes in a cockpit are goofing around doing a group selfie with daft grins and peace signs before the twin towers hones into view

Yep, episode 6 about 9 minutes in.

I liked it at the time - I found it funny, but have no real desire to watch it again. Like most satire, it was toothless and solipsistic - its main target was the media on which it was broadcast: what's the fucking point of that? And did it even change anything about its tiny target? Obviously not.

I remember 'David Beckham' saying something like - "The crowds kept singing 'does she take it up the arse?' - and to this day, I don't know the answer."

I suppose you have to concede that if it's funny, it's done all you can expect. I don't remember that 9/11 joke though. That sounds properly shit.

Yeah, at the time the idea of Charlotte Church vomiting herself inside out was funny in retrospect (and ten years on from the death of Amy Winehouse), now it just seems like a variation of the kind of coverage she got at the time, a kind of creepy "child star gone wild" media aesthetic, made palatable for people who would hold their nose at ever buying a tabloid, a kind of satirical Jeff Koons.

I remember a few years ago looking through the work he's done and so much of it was was fantastic, the Chris Morris stuff, Friday/Saturday night armistice, The Armando Ianucci Show, time trumpet, Alan Partridge, The Thick of it, etc. But a lot of it speaks to a particular ideology that we are maybe even now too immersed in to be able to speak to with clarity. The court jester of Neoliberalism with a post imperial/new media twist, in this world you're either a viciously aggressive clever cynic or a self-obsessed, sheepish imbecile. Rather than inspire action, it inspires apathy.

In retrospect Time Trumpet feels like an attempt to do Brass Eye without the celebrity con job segments & Chris Morris (the former segments get criticised by some, but outside of their own intrinsic merit they meant that the show had to be anchored in something plausibly believable to someone, and so puts it in the tradition of Swift's modest proposal), Ianucci is a smart company man liberal with a nose for talent, fair fucks for that three little words tweet he sent to Alaistair Campbell, but like the vast majority of the British media cabal he was completely silent in the face of the most bare-faced lying media campaign in living memory in the form of the attacks on Corbyn (it was vaguely plausible Sadam Hussein had WMDs, in the sense that he had big priors, it was never the case that as doggedly anti war/racist politician like JC was some kind of barely closeted left wing Hitler).

I remember someone saying that what killed Spitting Image was the Sarah Ferguson toe sucking story, because the writers realised you couldn't satirise that (plus the 'victims' were far too fond of their puppets), it was more spitting image than Spitting Image, this generations equivalent is David Cameron whistling to himself after the post Brexit press conference did it for Ianucci-style comedy.

I remember a bit about Tim Henman making me laugh, but it was pretty disappointing overall.

Oh yeah Tim Henman working as a waiter so people keep saying "Come on Tim" That's good actually.

Pauline Walnuts

What sort of person says 'Come on waiter'?

Porn star? come on a porn star? There's a joke in there somewhere.

I'll tell you what's really shit: Armando Iannucci's Radio 1 shows - they're being repeated currently on Radio 4 Extra, and I was embarrassed to remember enjoying them, sitting stoned in a Cambridge bedsit in the mid 90s.

Was all Radio 1 comedy that bad?
