Sometimes it's so hard with Twitter to figure out what someone is saying and to who and for why.

Echo Valley 2-6809

That first tweet seems perfectly fair-minded and ultimately pro-Norm, yet she's getting flak for it. A lot of his (male) fans seem to be dullards.

Real fucking dullards, given that the jokes they were taking the piss out of were clearly homages to well known Norm jokes, pretty affectionate ones at that. I mean how fucking insecure do you have to be to put shouting down any potential detractors of your supposed idol ahead of actually knowing his material.

I think there will probably be a lot more stories like that of him just being weirdly nasty to folk, I'm not fan of Chris Kattan but Norm's fucking bizarre attitude to him made me deeply uncomfortable and it was one area where his material was thin on the ground. Werner Herzog managed to do basically the same thing by accident as was way funnier:

Still I do mourn his loss and consider him to be one of my favourite comedians, at the same time I'm glad women are speaking about this given what still seems to be going on at SNL and hopefully future comedy titans will not be tainted with this kind of horrible baggage.

lankyguy95

Bob Saget's tribute to him is understandably very raw, especially when he starts talking about texting him a week or two ago.

Anthony Jeselnik found out Norm passed away while on Howie Mandel's podcast, he seems stunned and starts feeling regretful about their contentious relationship https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6Gp2lQGCag

Funny you should mention Kattan, as I just ran across this, which would seem to complicate matters further:

Yeah, totally agree. That post from Nancy Norton says a lot - She's dealt with it in the best way possible. Thoughtful, honest, funny and even written in Norm's voice. Respect to her for writing it.

As for his male fans being dullards, on the archive.org page hosting the old NML episodes there was a long post about how a lot of the comments were very "alt right" and down right nasty (especially towards Margaret Cho) -   Although it looks like it's been removed and replaced since he died.

Ah, it was Anthony Jeselnik! I saw that video earlier of him reacting but didn't know who it was.

Norm MacDonald is ultimately unknowable.

Knowing that he was diagnosed with cancer 9 years ago, it does cast a new light on the last nine years of his career. When he suddenly appeared with a new podcast and had put on a lot of weight, it was clear he was going through A Thing but he never talked directly about it.

There's a weird story in Chris Kattan's book about how Lorne Michaels made him sleep with Amy Heckerling. Sounds like the guy had a tough time in that creepy world of 90s SNL.

That's what I keep thinking about the most - He did his best stuff whilst battling cancer. Makes me rethink so many moments from this ear of his career - Like when he vomits (off screen) during the Tim Allen episode and they all joke about it being due to "something he ate".

Shoulders?-Stomach!

A quiet, groping of women dignity.

In the light of these revelations, i can't in good conscience abbreviate his name to Norm anymore.

Norm Macdonald was a great man, he had cancer towards the end

He was going for a role as a fat guy.

Oof, I don't remember that, but yeah. It was weird because it felt like if it'd been anyone else their career would've gone off the rails. He looked like his life was falling apart but he remained lucid throughout.

Bronzy

He was a deeply closeted dead man.

This seems to be a nice hefty playlist of his SNL moments (which may have been posted before, sorry).

First clip on that list is exactly as shit as shows that make fun of SNL make fun of it for being. Like a 30 Rock TGS sketch.

poo

Like many I've binged the fuck out of Norm these past few days, and discovered a lot of stuff that was new to me. God he was good.

SNL can range from brilliant to astonishingly shit, with most sketches averaging out to 'pretty bad'. The inconsistency is unlike any other sketch show, but that's not surprising given how it's made.

Magnum Valentino

I love some of them but as someone else pointed out on here once, they have an annoying habit of having a character comment on the ridiculousness of the sketch too often.

Probably the lowest lows of any sketch comedy I've ever seen but plenty of classics peppered throughout (Jeopardy, that Kenan Thompson one where everyone dances, the former pornstars etc)

They almost never know how to end them either.

I swear that happens in every single SNL sketch I've ever seen.  Just off the top of my head, the David S. Pumpkins sketch (which I like) has a lot of time filled with characters just pointing out how wacky the unfolding events are.

What else can you do in that sketch though? They're supposed to be confused and you have to keep building on it.

Fair point, but they could have written it better than having lines like "It was just a guy in a pumpkin suit with two B-Boy skeletons" which just makes it sound like the sketch is being inclusive towards blind people which is nice but less funny.

Avril Lavigne

Also Kate follows that line up with "How is that scary?" which is another unnecessary ramming-home of the whole premise of the sketch before it's even halfway over. Whatevs I'm not a writer.
