AOC is a careerist and increasingly out of touch with leftwing sentiment. Her growing unpopularity is less to do with the perfect being the enemy of the good, and more to do that how little she's done with her popularity. Her initial hype wasn't about her, it was about a community effort to upset a DNC coronation. Making it about her and her potential in politics is a slap in the face to people who slogged to get her elected in the first place.

Compared to her much more liberal politics like Stacey Abrams and Ayanna Pressley have put their careers and reputations on the line much more than she has over the last twelve months. It's easier to respect a liberal who takes a risk than a professed socialist who doesn't. Stacey Abrams has much more boring centrist politics and will go down as a hero for repeatedly putting her head out for voting rights in a way that AOC hasn't about any supposed 'socialist' policy she supports. But she has made TikToks where she describes why settling for less is good.

AOCs videos where she speaks "to the left" are increasingly condescending, urging the same sort of pragmatism that the liberal establishment does just through the argot of social justice incantations. I can see why people are getting pissed off. That said, she's raised a bunch of money and drummed up support for a lot of stuff outside of politics so maybe her heart is still in that and she'll be a long term good when it comes to passing the hat around. I dunno. I think we're seeing "activism" as a pop culture/social media thing continue to die off. Radical slogans at the Met Gala, what could be more toe curling. What could do more to make the idea of restributing wealth more toothless and annoying. We got all your aesthetics: camp, high camp, low camp, medium camp, kitsch, retro kitsch, future kitsch, camp kitsch, kitsch camp and progressive taxation.

She is an NYC politician going to an NYC event so I am not sure why she shouldn't attend, whatever her affiliation. If she hadn't gone, no-one would have noticed. If she had gone and worn something normal, I doubt anyone would have noticed either. At least with she has put the idea into the public consciousness for a bit, which is part of her job
