Name That Indie Movie

I remember it was comprised of nothing but telephone calls - like, none of the characters ever met. It was North American, and was probably from the first golden age of indie cinema, mid 80s to mid 90s. I think it was feature length, but I'm not 100% sure on it.

I tried searching by IMDB keyword, but nothing popped out at me. Any ideas?

Just gonna check it wasn't Talk Radio..?

No idea, but there is a 1992 novel called Vox by Nicholson Baker which has a very similar premise- the whole book is one long telephone conversation between two people who have never met before, who've been put together via a chatline service in a porn magazine - which also has very 90s indie-movie sensibilities, and I wonder if there's a connection there.

There's the Whoopi Goldberg film 'The Telephone' - directed by Rip Torn, oddly enough - that came out in the late 80s.  Haven't seen it since it came out but it's pretty much what you've described there - just her in her flat, making random prank calls initially, but eventually bonding with people she never meets.

Kind of shite as I recall, a bit of an attempt at weaving little bits of stand-up into something that vaguely resembled a story.  I doubt it's the one you're looking for as the star is hardly unknown, and the title - well if that didn't pop up in your IMDB search then it's even more bollocks than I thought it was.

Nothing yet. I think the movie had multiple characters and wasn't primarily focused on one, but...well, I barely remember any of it, so who knows.

I'm pretty sure I saw it on Channel 4 back when they would show full nights of weirdo cinema.

Well done! Starring Aida Turturro who played Janice Soprano (but isn't related to John Turturro).

I thought they were cousins?

Wikipedia (yes, I know) says they are...
