Can't say I know a whole lot about them, but about 10 years ago I was wandering through downtown Toronto on St. Patrick's night, feeling a bit lonely. To my left was one of a horrible chain of faux English pubs called The Elephant and Castle, packed to the brim with drunk drunk idiots in green plastic hats. To my right (literally) was Roy Thomson Hall, which seemed to be attracting an altogether more dapper crowd of older couples, all the men in their suits.

So I walked in, no idea what was on, bought a ticket, bought a giant whisky and somehow got a nice boxed off area of the balcony all to myself. The Chieftains did a great show, along with about 30 local bagpipers. Absolutely cracking, the best St. Patrick's night I've ever had.

Glebe

Terribly sad. Walked past him here in Dublin a couple of years ago. RIP Paddy M.

There'll be a tribute to him tonight on the Late Late Show (RTE)
