There's never been a good drum solo. CHANGE MY MIND.

Pavlov`s Dog`s Dad`s Dead

My thesis is perfectly illustrated by this clip of Cream playing live, when Enoch Eric and Ken hang up their instruments and walk off stage to work their way through War and Peace, rather than stand there awkwardly, pretending to enjoy it, while their irascible drummer works himself interminably up into a frenzy. I'm on Sertraline, FFS, and even I can get to the end quicker than that. Nobody likes drum solos. Nobody. Not even Ginger Baker did, really: just look at him grimace. Tell me I'm wrong.

There is precisely one good drum solo, played by Clive Bunker in Dharma for One on Jethro Tull's This Was album. Thanks.

Pauline Walnuts

There was a Bill Ward one, where after a short solo bellows "Long drum solos are BORING!"

Can't find it on YouTube now.

Not a solo, but I can listen to Keith Moon isolated drums for hours minutes and not get bored

Gradual Decline

Doktor Avalanche did some pretty powerful solo spots I seem to remember.

Well, at least he doesn't look like he actively hates it, and I'll confess there are moments when he's just using his left hand that are technically impressive, but I can't imagine ever choosing to listen to that again outside of discussions arising from this thread.

Rat Salad is also a short drum solo, as an album track.

Mario Duplantier's are quite thrilling and again, short. Brevity is key.

I've somehow made it to nearly fifty with a lot of jazz simply passing me by. But I enjoyed the alpha and the omega of that track quite a lot, and I'll explore their output more as a consequence, thank you. However, again, I found the drum solo quickly outstayed it's welcome - it just didn't hold my interest.

Had high hopes for this, what with being fairly partial to Jethro Tull and, as that shows, having the ability to endure solos on unlikely instruments. But even the addition of comedy sound effects (bulb horns?) In the middle can't really lift the solo for me, I'm afraid.

If you'll indulge me further, Bill Bruford and Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson), B'Boom - https://youtu.be/EZk1bl7MBcE?t=1980

And Bruford on his own trying to throw Tony Levin off the beat (King Crimson again), Indiscipline - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SDt1TLUbzY

Oh, and just about any Tony Williams solo (of which there are far too many to post in a thread that starts from a point of doubt).

Jaki Liebezeit, possibly during a power cut.

Hmm, ok, maybe Stockholm syndrome is setting in. Or maybe it was the force majeure circumstances. But that is the first solo that has introduced a glimmer of uncertainty into my position. Perhaps it's because it's the first one in which the drummer seems to understand the value of a pause.

idunnosomename

they're not bad in sets these days, it's usually just a way to work up the crowd towards the end of the show. the 30-minute shit from the '70s though, bloody hell. that's just so the rest of the band can take heroin/have sex with a child/have a poo

Enjoyed that more than any of the others so far, tbh. Less is definitely more.

Video Game Fan 2000

best Jaki Liebezeit is when he absolutely loses his shit about 15 minutes into Aumgn and sounds like he's trying to pound his kit into the ground

I feel you OP and I say that as a drummer. However, I feel Buddy Rich should CHANGE YOUR MIND:

The first performance is sublime. The sound is just so aggressive and exciting, with a snare that sounds like a fucking machine gun. They're not drum connoisseurs in that audience. They're Joe Public wanting to be entertained and Rich was an entertainer.

This is a good one too:

Louie Bellson. Duke Ellington. Skin Deep.

That's got a lovely bombastic opening, hasn't it? In fact, my first impressions of the track are very positive. Duke Ellington, like Coltrane, is of course a name I've heard of, but I've never explored their work. I'll have to remedy that.

Ok, now I'm onto the solo proper - I'd been enjoying the brief brass punctuations to the drumming earlier, and - wait, is that the first cowbell of the thread[nb] Frederick Delius considers rewrite [/nb]? - no, sorry, he's lost me. Nice coda, though.

Oh, that's very nice. What a groove. One of my favourite drummers and it's is the first time I've heard this[nb]Edit: Or maybe not. I have this video bookmarked but have no memory of bookmarking it.[/nb]. Ta for the link.

I see there's one where he sits in at Ed Shaughnessy's big kit - reminds me of that little drum battle they had on Carson.

That's a good one too. It's not easy playing on someone else's kit but there he is telling everyone else in the band how amazing they are.

That's the bunny.

And OnlyRegistered's link to Animal has also reminded me of the Animal-Buddy battle (which is in the related vids on that page).
