I just don't get it; I'm scared I'll be at some middle class party and someone will say "so what do you do?" and someone else will answer "who me? oh I'm a cosplayer, I'm currently working on appearing as a prepubescent succubus from Tokyo Playtime" and everyone will have to go oh really, that is great, and pretend they have ever head of whatever anime they are referencing.

Is it basically all models in fancy dress? From what I've seen there is like some supposed skill to it in that you can make yourself look like some distorted over-sexualised computer game character and this is seen as aspirational.

There is also the notion of like those overplayed job titles like "sandwich artist", I'm a cosplayer working in my cosplay office, drawing up plans for my cosplaying schedule.  Its fancy dress YOU FOOLS!

They save 'fancy' for descriptions of tomatoes on tins, and ketchup.  'Extra fancy'.

They have more money than Europeans but clearly money isn't everything.
