Getting all primped and preened in your best cat ears, nyaaing your way into the arms of a big brusque sort with a massive foam sword and then shagging LITERALLY like animals? Sounds fuckin great to me, wish I could afford the gear.

I just don't get it; I'm scared I'll be at some middle class party and someone will say "so what do you do?" and someone else will answer "who me? oh I'm a cosplayer, I'm currently working on appearing as a prepubescent succubus from Tokyo Playtime" and everyone will have to go oh really, that is great, and pretend they have ever head of whatever anime they are referencing.

Is it basically all models in fancy dress? From what I've seen there is like some supposed skill to it in that you can make yourself look like some distorted over-sexualised computer game character and this is seen as aspirational.

There is also the notion of like those overplayed job titles like "sandwich artist", I'm a cosplayer working in my cosplay office, drawing up plans for my cosplaying schedule.  Its fancy dress YOU FOOLS!

Flatulent Fox

Missed another bin collection!
I like how she has an outfit for emptying the bins too.
I was about to go out for a cycle with all my gear on and put the wheely bins out.A builder walking past looked up a bit confused so I said it was an X -Treme sport.

chveik

it's generally more of a hobby than a job. never seen it described as 'aspirational', it's just people having fun

bgmnts

It's like dressing up for adults.

When I were growing up it was called fancy dress I think.

Ah yes fun.  Like writing silly stuff on a forum and playfully exaggerating for shits and giggles.

Perhaps we are all cosplayers of sort.

Yeah, the difference comes down to it (normally) being done specifically for conventions.

shiftwork2

North Americans don't say fancy dress, they say costumes.

They save 'fancy' for descriptions of tomatoes on tins, and ketchup.  'Extra fancy'.

They have more money than Europeans but clearly money isn't everything.

Yes they have conventions.  They are basically the models they have at petrol head conventions but for nerds aren't they.

"Do you come with the limited edition orc figurine?"
