North Americans don't say fancy dress, they say costumes.

They save 'fancy' for descriptions of tomatoes on tins, and ketchup.  'Extra fancy'.

They have more money than Europeans but clearly money isn't everything.
I worked in a place where on weekends you could wear casual,so I would remind any new starts that weekends were fancy dress.

Yes they have conventions.  They are basically the models they have at petrol head conventions but for nerds aren't they.

"Do you come with the limited edition orc figurine?"

No, they aren't being paid. They aren't "spokesmodels". They are convention punters.

That's not to say that there isn't money to be made from it, of course. Some girls will be putting stuff up on Onlyfans, some charge photographers to do photoshoots whilst at the conventions and some even do escort work at conventions. But most just do it for the fun of it.

Ah I did not know this; not saying I'm iginit though not sure I understand what is "fun" about it but then I once went to a fancy dress party as Fidel Castro which had same effect on other people at the party as some half bionic lady vampire would have on me i.e. who the fuck is that meant to be?

What's fun about a bunch of youngsters with mutual interests dressing up and hanging out?

Mate.

It's good when you get the lads dressing up like women

No you are right. it is great, absolutely nothing wrong with it whatsoever.  YOU CHANGED MY MIND.

I was thinking about going to one of these conventions and booing them from a far but I see the error I was making now.

I hate to sound gatekeepy, but conventions seemed much more fun before the Star Wars prequels and the DC/MCU. Endearingly ramshackle, inventive unpolished charity-shop cosplay and populated with folks for whom nerd-dom was more unconscious nature rather than attention-seeking lifestyle brand-loyalty consumption.

Or not. I'm nearly fucking fifty - I'm sure what youngins call 'fun' these days feels just as good for them as my shitty Ben Kenobi brown M&S bathrobe-based outfit was in 1993. People enjoying things doesn't warrant my criticism.
