Try To Help A Butterfly, Fall Down The Stairs

Started by Dr Rock, October 22, 2021, 10:07:12 AM

I opened the door to my flat to go down to check the post, and a butterfly flew through the door alongside me. Can't figure out how he/she/they was in my flat as all the windows are closed, but I guessed it wanted out as it went past me to the big window at the top of the stairs.

It was a beauty, possibly a red admiral

And sadly the big window at the top of the stairs is fitted and there is no way to open it. Freedom does not come that way Ms Butterfly...

I try to get it to land on my finger, as if I'm Dr Doolittle or Snow White, but the butterfly is having none of it, preferring to repeatedly bump into the window. I manage to carefully grab its closed wings, so I can let her/him/them out the front door, the only route to fresh air and freedom.

Then I fall down the stairs

(letting go of the butterfly, fear not)

It all happened in a flash, in an instant I was at the bottom of the stairs wondering if I was basically ok (it was a fall down the stairs that originally led to me being disabled). I had bumped my head hard, my shoulder really hurt, as did my spine, and some other injuries, but nothing seemed broken. The butterfly looked at me as if to say 'thanks a bunch mate, very helpful'

This was yesterday. I'm still in a lot of pain, but it's a lot better. No idea where Red Admiral is though, hope it found a way out.

Ah, I'm sorry for your trouble, Dr Rock.  Thank you for sacrificing your own wellbeing for one of our little beauty friends.

Anyone wondering about the ways of butterflies in winter might find this useful - https://nurturing-nature.co.uk/gardening-for-wildlife/what-to-do-with-hibernating-butterflies-in-your-house/

I think it's a red admiral that's been filtered and processed to fuck, or lit with a special red light or something. Aside from the red sheen it looks quite normal.

I saw a butterfly outside yesterday, which in late October in Scotland seemed a bit stupid of it even thought there were still a few flowers out. I'm pleased to say I didn't fall down anything. Hope you recover soon, Dr.

hope you feel better soon Doctor, try to take it easy

Captain Z

Why did the butterfly flutter by?

To get you to the other side.

touchingcloth

Did falling down the stairs undisable you, like those films where someone gets a knock on the head and hilarity ensures and the ending is they get a second knock on the head and hilarity desists?

"Who saves a butterfly upon a stair?"

I dunno if Jacob Rees-Mogg's dad would've fancied my dad. He had a motorbike (AJS) so maybe.

Didn't read the post.

Push a lot of butterflies down the stairs, do you? Vandal.

I love that yer man takes a tumble down a flight of stairs risking serious injury and then someone goes yeah... thats not a picture of a Red Admiral mate.

I hope this examble of no good deed goes unpunished won't put you off similar (but safer) insect preservation endeavours Dr Rock

i reckon thats a NewZealand Red Admiral

UPDATE!

Went to go downstairs yesterday and there's ol Red, still fancying his chances at passing through a solid glass pane. I looked at Red, Red looked at me. He/she/they didn't look their best, the colour of the wings seemed faded, it seemed to be on the brink of just giving up. 'Don't worry ol' pal' I said, 'I've got you'

'Are you going to fall arse over tit again, cos that didn't really help last time' Red seemed to say.

'I'll try not to old chum. Now hop on my finger'

It didn't hop on my finger, so I carefully grabbed its delicate wings again, and this time, taking a little more care, I escorted the tiny creature down two flights of stairs and let him go outside the front door.

He flew off jauntily, but not before looking back and seeming to say 'Nice one mate... nice one.'

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Straight into the jaws of a Rottweiler, no doubt.

Dr Rock

No, I clearly saw him/her/them zoom over to a butterfly party over the road, where some of Red's mates were, and he/she/they was copping off with loads of other fit butterflies, and then they went home and had a good sleep, and went on to lead a rich life, passing peacefully in his/her/their sleep at the ripe old age of three and a half weeks.

Sadly the red admiral was coming in to find somewhere warm to hibernate and will soon be dead.

Edit : just read that it might still be inside so all is not lost!

Edit: just read it did make it out, will soon die a peaceful natural death of frostbite, so that's good

(Hope you are ok Dr R)

A butterfly tumbling down the stairs, hitting each step with an audible thump.
