Hairy Chin

That's a thoroughly enjoyable GLR show indeed! Some great daftness in there with the 'Calls to Franco' and 'Sgt. Murphy' at the end too. How long must Chris have spent talking to that guy all together to get as much out of him for cutting up as he did? Or did he not speak to him at all and 'Sgt. Murphy' is/was an archive recording?

It's always good to hear Chris on the phone to a live caller, or hearing something not quite go smoothly - like when Chris was taking the call and realised the next track wasn't cued up...in fact I got both of those in one on that show. The smalltalk with the callers has some whimsical gems quite often too; like the house hunting bit Gypsum mentioned.

Looking forward to hearing more shows! :-)

The story we've heard is that Sgt. Murphy was a bloke who lived in Bristol who was collared one day for a Feedback Report, gave a completely mad answer to the question, and completely threw Morris and left him thinking "I've *got* to use this guy...".

I hope that's true, simply because it's great! Cheers TJ.

Anyone else listened to the show yet then?

slim

I'm giving it a listen at the moment. I've not found it massively funny yet, but I did like the idea of what I'm about to mention.

**JOKE SPOILER**

I don't suppose anyone knows the name of the song playing at ~26:30 when he's playing radio hide and seek with the woman on the 'phone, do they?

I just knew she'd say something and lose, but the inevitability of it didn't spoil the gag at all.

Gypsum Fantastic

Gil Scott-Heron - The Bottle. He plays it on a R1 show, which is why I recognised it.

slim

Excellent, thanks. I'll have to find a compilation or something with that on I think. If it's present on a compilation then with any luck the surrounding music will be similar and of a similar quality.

Gypsum Fantastic

Chris also plays The Revolution Will Not Be Televised ("thing is, it probably will") and Work For Peace (twice) on the R1 shows, both of which are also excellent Heron songs. I bought one of his albums based on the strength of the former, and, while the rest of it wasn't as political as I would have liked (although quite political), it was still very enjoyable and relaxing jazz.

Excellent! Looking forward to it - cheers Neil.

Thanks for the guide, Neil. Just to let you know, the Suede track is "Animal Nitrate". Oh, and you missed out the Stereo MCs' "Connected", which is played after the calls to Franco.

A week or two, eh? Eeeeexcellent! (*Rubs hands*)

Ta for that, noticed another few mistakes, such as the first Keith Richards impression not being listed, and a few gaps in the music.  I must have copied over an old version of the guides when I moved back to this puter, as I had that show completely listed and had went to a lot of effort to make sure there were no silly mistakes this time.  Anyway, the other shows are all listed already so I just need to check them again to see if any more patching is needed, and then we can bang the rest of them out regularly.  Some really exciting stuff lined up for after the GLR run, too.  Would love to hear more opinions on this show though...maybe I should start a Comedy Chat thread as that would probably get more response.  There are just so many great throwaway bits and pieces in this show though, this run is definitely my fave Morris stuff.  At the start of this show he reads out a news report about plans to replace the British army with a large mirror...see, that's the kind of thing I used to love about Morris.  He would chuck out these fantastic ideas  and then move straight on to the next thing.  You can listen to the GLR shows and miss tons of great stuff if you're not paying full attention to them.  And that sort of 'how does he come up with this stuff?' material was scattered all through-out the GLR shows.  The MASJ segments are always a real treasure-trove for this kind of thing.  I hate hearing the set-up to a gag and knowing what the pay-off will be, but you could never guess where Morris was going when he was at his peak.  There were out-standing ideas flying out in all directions.

Just to say I thought this was amazing stuff - especially the newspaper article put to music, which made me laugh a bit too much on the train, probably scaring several small children in the process.

Ah, I'd forgotten about that bit. I take all I said back; that bit was very funny.

Divnee Gan

Thanks a lot. I'm about halfway through listening to this and have already creased up laughing a couple of times.

It's lovely to get more Morris stuff of the highest possible quality by doing nothing more than clicking on a link. Thanks again for all your hard work.

Azureus says the tracker is down (blue smiley) but I seem to be seeding anyway, just at a reduced rate. This is going to stay on my seeding list for a long time.

Anyone else listened to this show yet then?  Or read the shooting script and have interesting observations about it?

Quote from: "Neil"Or read the shooting script and have interesting observations about it?
I've deleted the PM from my sentbox of that little interchange we had about the script, else I'd post it here.

Not that it was interesting, mind.

The gist of it was that it was interesting seeing how the ideas and such are refined by Morris. It was nice to see the thoughts behind it as, frankly, the film baffled me somewhat.

I think it was an odd decision to obscure the spine of the book, if it was intentional, in the final cut of the film. The whole thing could've made much more sense had it been visible. Mind you, perhaps the effect of slight confusion was intended; I think it does have a place in art. It can be powerful.

QuoteGERBIL flashback
boy's head - oov we hear "oi!"
Boy's head turns
gerbil in cage: gerbil "yes you little fucker I've got a fucking story for you"
boy's face eyes wider
"you know daddy doesn't love mummy any more... He's been fucking your mum's friend Suzie Roche..
Boy's face - appalled
focus dissolve cut to silent of boy telling mum
CU her face breaking
creeping in CU boy - and sound of giggling gerbil going
hahhhahahehehe oooh bye bye daddyohh bye bye hehhehehehhehe - cam reaching boy;s eyes
Was that bit in the film itself? I can't remember... I like it anyhoo.

This, however is my favourite bit:

It's nice to know even those whose writing talents you admire have to stick that kind of bit in initially.

Only just got round to listening to this show. Fantastic stuff. I wish I had a better memory for quotes and segments.

"And that was Everlasting doo-dad by whatever." I love that.

butnut

Oh shit - I still haven't listened to all of this, but I'll change that within 24 hours, I promise Neil.

just checking you know that Morris voiced the unfunny new "Mini Adventure" ads

Gypsum Fantastic

That sounds quite unlikely - I don't think his career's at advert voicevover stage quite yet. I might well be wrong though. Anyone else seen these?

Anonymous

thanks for the patronising response

the cinema ad's certainly sound like Morris but this site the voice is a soundalike... an incredibly bad Day Today rip off...

Gypsum Fantastic

I wasn't really trying to be patronising - I just think you're probably wrong.

The voice on the ad sounds a bit like Peter Serafinowicz.

And I don't think they were consciously ripping off The Day Today.

Thanks to Neil, Mat Savage and Pinball (I have no torrent program) for supplying this show.  It's terrific.  I love the Keith Richards Manifesto.  I laughed hardest at  the Jonathon Miller impersonation during Catherine.

Okay if you say so.     :D
