Am I right in thinking a lot of this is completely unavailable? Principally her first album Desperate Character (1981), which, against her wishes, was repackaged and re-named Kirsty MacColl to cash in on the success of 'A New England'.

Anyone know why this is? Did she hate it or something?

I see that some of her rare early stuff is collated on the new three-disc anthology, but is there a reason why nobody's put together a complete 'early years' package? Is it all owned by different people?
