I tried to squash it but the mpeg has a dodgey frame in it. Thought I may as well put it up and try out savefile at the same time, they're good like.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

As far as Lynch's pre-'Lost Highway' work is concerned, this is the only thing I've never seen, apart from his abandoned TV freak-out 'On The Air' (which I'm never likely to see).

I saw 'The Grandmother' many years ago - I'm disappointed it's never been given a proper release.

The first episode of on the air (directed by him) was fab, I was in hysterics at the end, but I got half way through the second episode and had to turn it off I was so bored.

According to the Lynch biog I have, they only screened a couple of them before it got pulled.  The rest have never been seen.

dot

I got them from some torrent site, I'm sure it was the whole lot, 7 episodes or something. There's a torrent here http://www.torrentreactor.net/view.php?id=5187235 of the first three, don't know if it's still active but it says there's 2 seeders.

Quote from: "another Mr. Lizard"One I've not seen referred to here yet, though, and possibly the most gruelling movie I've ever seen, is 'Scrapbook' - a shot on video U.S. movie from about 2 or 3 years ago, available on region 1 DVD.

Quote from: "Ambient Sheep"bonus for 10 points, this isn't quite true.  A test for those paying attention - what was the OTHER thing that gave the youthful Sheepy nightmares?  Using Search is cheating
Was it the Esso Tiger?

Captain Crunch

No, it was the honey monster I bet.

I picked that up after reading his blurb on it as well. We're obviously both sick fucks.

Unfortunately it seems to be heavily cut, the allmovie review says it's 95 minutes long, but it's actually about 80.What's missing then?

Mr. Analytical

Nope... mine's 95 minutes but then I did import it as I was buying season 3 of the Shield anyway.

The cover alone is pretty disgusting.

Dirty Boy

I did notice bits in the trailer that weren't in the actual film.I can't really understand why they would cut the uk release though

What did you make of it anyway? Can't say i was hugely impressed/appalled myself...

Mr. Analytical

Well that kind of film really needs to be seen in the cinema so you can't escape from it.

Kermode said, quite correctly, that watching horror is a masochistic act.  You put yourself through terrible discomfort just for the hell of it.  The problem with watching it on DVD is that you can too easily change the channel or put it on pause.  Which is what I did... watched a bit and then went and did some email.  I'm going to sit down and watch it properly today at some point.  Put the remotes in the kitchen.

Utter Shit

Have I been reading wrong, or has Happiness not been mentioned yet?

Mr. Analytical

I think I mentionned Happiness.  Or I meant to.  That's pretty twisted.

Scrapbook's got a few moments in it that are really hardcore.  Like the bit at the beginning where the dad rapes his son because he was molested by his sister.

Then there's the bit when the girl gets raped with a bottle till blood's trickiling down her legs and the bottle drops to the floor covered in blood.

It's pretty messed up but in quite a light-weight manner.  It's all Texas Chainsaw and Henry rather than anything really new.  I was slightly disappointed that the film didn't stick with a subjective camera angle all the way through.  Using a handheld camera to film it undermined it in that throughout the film it really felt as if there was someone else in the house with them.

It's okay I'd say.  Evil and repulsive but not a film that really leaves you feeling ill at ease after you've watched it.

All his short films are on DVD..."The Short Films of David Lynch" available via his website (though I got it second hand and cheaper via eBay).

And all seven episodes of On The Air were released on video, as was Industrial Symphony #1 and the pilot for Hotel Room.  Although not commercially available any more, VHS copies and DVD conversions circle eBay.

Or maybe Worzel Gummidge when he fell towards the camera?

No?  I must be getting soft then...  :-S

I just discovered www.dvdhorror.com - a British based import company, that have a fair selection of Region 0 (NTSC) horror imports. So far I've ordered the live action Ichi the Killer prequel (average, but still a fair companion) and the Guinea Pig boxset.

They also have several versions of August Underground Mordum which has gained a certain notoriety (& along with Scrapbook, a film I doubt I'll bother with), Nicholas Cerda's Aftermath & Genesis and all 4 Men Behind the Sun

I also spotted that http://www.fabpress.com have a Region 0 PAL box set (as well as single editions) of  Jodorowsky's El Topo & The Holy Mountain

Back to disturbing films, last night I saw Lukas Moodysson's latest A Hole in my Heart. I don't know what to say about this -- it's pretty unpleasant to watch both visually and in its very bleak tone. It's a diatribe against pornography, reality TV and - perhaps - capitalism, but at times it's also just plain boring.

Mr. Analytical

Oh god... the Holy Mountain is utterly bonkers.  Cowboy riding around with a naked young boy, people getting stuck inside mountains and inter-breeding till they're all deformed.

Ken Park and Bully will not leave my mind for all the wrong reasons (the right reasons?).

I just can't make my mind up about Larry Clark, maybe if he made a film that didn't fixate on this honest teenage sex thing then maybe I could offer an objective critique.

Short film about killing was a tough one, absolutely no pandering to the viewer.

Irreversible, defo not just the specific scenes;  the whole thing is thick with hell.

The War Zone is also damn bleak.

Ooh - that one escaped my notice.  I'll go off and have a look for that shortly.

I remember the 'Industrial Symphony #1' video coming out, but never got around to picking one up.  The release of 'On The Air' passed me by, too.  I'll try and search it out.  (Am still pretty sure my Lych bio claimed 'OTA' remained unavailable...ah well).

Thanks Mr Dark Sky!

QuoteThen there's the bit when the girl gets raped with a bottle till blood's trickiling down her legs and the bottle drops to the floor covered in blood.

Y'see that's not in the version i've got.A lot of scenes seem to fade to black at awkward points and the shower scene from the trailer is omited completely, also at the end when she's trying to seduce the killer, how does he end up with cuts across his chest? It's obviously done with the knife but at no point do you see it happen, so it's either bad continuity or (as i'm expecting) bad censorship.

I'm pretty pissed off i ended up with the bloody cut version though, 15 minutes is a hell of a lot to be missing.

ps:When The Wind Blows is out now on DVD

Mr. Analytical

You can see why they cut 15 minutes out of Scrapbook.  It borders on the pornographic at times.  What about the bit where he cuts all her toes off with a pick-axe?  is that in there?  or the bit after the first rape when she's curled up in a ball, blood leaking out of her and he gets his old chap out and pisses all over her?

My my... I bet this sounds like an utterly charming film :-)

My problem is that while it's incredibly graphic and the gore and rape scenes pull no punches.  It's not necessarily that down-beat a film.  I think wolf Creek is far more downbeat and depressing to watch than Scrapbook.  Scrapbook's all visuals and no psychology.

Yes and no.The first rape fades out as soon as it begins really...

Indeed, i'm starting to feel a bit eeire for discussing it in front of everyone.I'm just annoyed it's been cut  s'all, i don't generally enjoy seeing women raped with bottles or being pissed on...

is that convincing enough?

Mr. Analytical

I remember being in a video shop with my ex and we were, as usual, disagreeing about what film to rent.  I suddenly saw Irreversible and proclaimed in a loud voice "You'd like that one... it's got a 9 minute anal rape in it!" :-D

Dirty Boy

Is that why she's your ex, by any chance ;-)

What's 'The Machinist' like? Is it as disturbing as people say it is?

Mr. Analytical

Yet to see the Machinist but nope she's my ex for a completely different set of reasons.  Was funny though because I didn't mean to mention the rape as a selling point... it just... tumbled out of my mouth.

not really disturbing. it's very good, bale is excellent, again. weirdly, my mate rented it and we watched it, and i thought, wow, it's just like a cross between memento and fight club, then when we went to return it we saw the case on the shelf, and guess what quote was on the cover?

Captain Crunch

Did it say '"Check out this 9-minute anal rape scene!" - Mr. Analytical, the Daily Shitface' by any chance?

About 68% of all relationship breakdowns are directly related to video shop based disagreements by the way.

The thing is that everything that goes on in Secretary is consensual.  The idea is that no matter how fucked up and weird you are and what your desires from a relationship are, you can find someone that's compatible and that that compatibility can make you happy even if you're still completely fucked up.

I thought it was superb and highly erotic at times.

It's excellent, no doubt about it. I remember watching it at the cinema with two friends, one of whom came away with an opinion similar to yours and Captain's, while the other was as perturbed by it as me. Certainly, it's a  healthy thing that we can take away polar opposite views.

For my part, I thought that both characters were absolutely inscrutable to a point where not even they could talk about what they wanted or how they felt. They obviously shared an unspoken language in their relationship but  that had its own wordless momentum that denied them the possibility of articulating feelings of being exploited or suffering needlessly. I thought that the film was asking 'to what extent does Lee want to suffer physically to process her low self-esteem and loneliness?' and concluding that there's no way that anyone can measure it. Her problems have their own momentum which she can no longer articulate to anyone.

I would need to see it again to confirm, but I thought there was a suggestion that the opening monologue was spoken from beyond the grave.

I can understand your point of view but these possibilities chilled me on the most visceral level.

Mr. Analytical

I didn't pick up on it being from beyond the grave and if it was then it would run contrary to the entire dramatic feel of the film.

I actually did find it quite a turn on though... I'm not into BDSM but I have to admit I did have the horn for quite a bit of it.
