Keith Allen on Rik and Ade: "they went on to produce absolute shit"

From an article in the Times when Rik died. What a terrible tribute:

QuoteAllen's maverick, contrarian impulses are impressive. They reveal themselves as we talk. My phone rings. I'm told that Rik Mayall has died suddenly. I tentatively break the news to Allen about his peer. His reaction is an instant critique of Mayall's work with long-time comedy partner Ade Edmondson. "I hated their work," he says. "I hated it." But you wrote some of it, I say. The Yob, The Bull*****ers . . . these were early "alternative comedy" classics.

Allen sighs and assembles a roll-up, like a teacher gearing up to make one final effort at explaining the difference between left and right to a notorious dunce. "Obviously condolences to his family," he says, "but there's personal tragedy and then there's the work. I enjoyed working with Peter Richardson (co-writer on The Comic Strip Presents . . .), but to me it was childish. And I felt Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson went on to produce just s***. Bland rubbish that the BBC laps up, the sort of b******s that makes you a national treasure. I think Rik was actually talented but, Edmondson, no. Absolutely talentless."
He waves away a bee. "I can't give you a eulogy," he says. "I'm sorry but this country has got to do something about applauding mediocrity."

That's no way to speak about your daughter.

Keith Allen popped up in a middling action film called Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and I was very happy to see that within minutes someone had thrown him into an industrial mincer - I'd like to think the scene was written especially for him.

The brass neck of Allen calling someone else talentless, and complaining that their work was shit!

Where's YOUR masterpiece, mate - the lyrics for Vindaloo?

I think anytime I've seen Keith Allen mentioned by other people in interviews or podcasts or autobiographies it's always to say what an unpleasant cunt he is.

I once had a piss standing next to Keith Allen in a potable toilet block in a festival VIP area.

I know it's not saying much, but the fact I couldn't even be arsed to say hello tells you quite a bit. I'd have had no qualms about saying hello to Rik or Ade.

I never liked Bottom. It definitely hovers around the level of 'shit'. Only ever worth watching when Rik went into overdrive.

Keith Allen's a decent actor.

I love Rik and Ade but I think Keith Allen has a point about their comedy being childish. The Bottom Live stuff really exposes the childishness. Which makes Allen more of a cunt for touching a raw nerve. Just when Rik had died. Such a cunt.

They were quite aware it was childish, it's only a problem for those who are annoyed by that.

Keith Allen's always been a rotten twat, good actor or no.

I quite like Lily Allen. It surprises me that she's been termed a nepo baby in some quarters. If anything she's the opposite. It's quite an achievement to be able to sing and write some reasonably good songs against the seemingly insurmountable odds of being the daughter of Keith Allen

Refreshing to see someone not just gush. I'm glad he said what he said even if I don't entirely agree. I do think Rik is way more talented than Ade, so I can't disagree with him there.

I like it in the same way that, if memory serves, Mark E Smith slagged off John Peel when he died.

It all makes one proud to be British!

QuoteAllen has expressed grudging admiration for Conservative Party politicians David Cameron and William Hague

I guess it's true to form that he'd say something outrageous at a completely inappropriate time, and I'm afraid I kinda admire the chutzpah. Then again, unlike most of youse I rather like Allen. One would have thought though that he'd have affection for someone he'd known for 30 years and manage to express some warmth about him as a person, so I am surprised by the complete absence of that. Mind, this is a British newspaper providing this information so it should be taken on board with caution.

Allen was meant to be at this weekend's Comic Strip Presents screenings but I'm told he's cancelled, replaced by Phil Cornwell, so I won't get a chance to ask/upbraid him about this.

A quick read of his wiki, and his childhood is similar to Ade's, both had fathers serving in British military and living in various bases.  Maybe he could connect to Ade in way he couldn't with Rik.

Good to see Keith "lead character in 3 series of BBC One prime-time Robin Hood" Allen railing against bland rubbish peddled by the BBC. Such integrity.

I don't think the nepobaby thing is about ability but rather opportunity

That was a great version of Robin Hood!
