So I've had a domain name registered for the last year, but no site to go with it. I've been meaning to remedy that, but it turns out I can't get my head round Dreamweaver (also I'm a lazy twat). Recently I've noticed adverts for the likes of squarespace and wix that let you build a site from templates. Has anyone used one of these? Are they any good, and is it a particularly bad idea to be using a boilerplate web design on what will be a graphic design site?

There's been a couple of discussions about this in the past and although I don't think this was to do with graphic design, they still might be worth a look.

I really wouldn't worry using either of those services - you can customise templates and a lot of graphic designers do use them. In addition to what people say here, do a Google search for something like 'squarespace for graphic designers' and have a look - you'll be able to see some good examples.

If you don't mind sorting the hosting yourself, there are other template solutions that would work well too.

I used Squarespace myself and it does have limitations. Especially in terms of not being able to customize the specifics of each page.

But honestly, for what I needed it for, it looks lovely, formats directly to mobile phones as well whilst still maintaining the design I did, it is absolutely brilliant for making something that looks professional, easily. But it does have a roof with what you can do.

But you can also give it a free trial without putting down your credit card so may as well just try it out for yourself.
