I hope Larry has a problem with tipping this season.

"IRASSHAIMASE!"

Can't. Wait.

Daniel

If anyone finds a way I can watch this online I'd really hate for them to message me about it, so please don't...

What did we think of that then, lads?

Pretty rough-going, I thought. I think I chuckled once or twice, but a lot of the time it felt very by-the-numbers. Familiar scenarios without satisfying conclusions.

On a more petty note, it's very weird to see something reference the pandemic while depicting in a post-COVID world that doesn't exist. They must've written it when the vaccine was on the horizon and we'd be back to normal in no time - oops.

Does anyone else wonder if Albert Brooks' "living funeral" might've been an old idea for Funkhouser (played by his brother)? Seemed like the kind of thing they'd write for that character.

Moribunderast

Yeah, that episode did nothing for me, sadly. Not a single laugh. Still lovely to have the show back and I will eagerly anticipate each new episode but that one felt like 45 minutes of not much.

EOLAN

Very much enjoyed it. Particularly a lot of the physical/slapstick humour which I always love from this show and I feel is underappreciates compared to the social arguments.

The Lucy Liu interactions were a bit bland and felt a bit tacked on. Probably preferred a regular character rather than a famous date for this one. The ending with the orchestra could F*** off too.

Harry Badger

Albert Brooks was excellent in this though I would never have recognised him. The

Three Stooges reference

had me properly laughing.

Mobius

I usually don't like the first episode of new Curb because it's been so long, and everyone always looks a bit weird and old. And having re-watched so much Curb over the years a new episode never seems to land immediately.

But I thought this one was pretty good, certainly not a classic but had a few good laughs. Albert Brooks was funny, enjoyed the fake funeral and people walking into glass. Nice to see Leon doing his own thing too.

Yeah the music ending was weird. I suppose it doesn't matter, just felt 'odd'

the science eel

I loved the orchestra. It's an iconic theme now, it brings a smile just to hear it, and it was cool that we got it just a bit differently and to see LD rocking gently in his chair to it.

Leon was ace in this episode, the pigeons line was a highlight. Jeff Garlin sadly underused (again).

Jeff's the one who seems to have aged most this time around. He sounded a bit tired the whole time as well. Larry somehow looks younger than he did two seasons back.

biggest laugh for me was this moment at the end:
Spoiler alert

- hey, got any purell?
- yeah (produces massive bottle) they ran out of the smaller ones
- that's a big boy

Mobius

It felt like they were sponsored by Purell, or is it just another case of Americans using a brand name to refer to a product

Shades of Jerry talking to Newman about Drake's Coffee Cake.

Just been watching that reference on YouTube, laughing very hard at how stupid it is.

I'll need to watch again, but did anyone else notice a lot of jokes that seemed set up but never paid off in any way? Like when Larry's coaching Jon Hamm on Yiddish terms to use in the funeral speech ... seemed like it'd be the start of something or other, but nothing ever comes of that does it? I also think the subplot between Larry, Susie and their friend with dementia had a pretty underwhelming payoff. Lucy Liu was completely wasted. The casting stuff felt weirdly similar to Cheryl and the Seinfeld reunion in Season 7, and the extortion premise makes absolutely no sense and actually felt a little iffy politically. I hope that subplot fades away like the sexual harassment lawsuit did.

Hopefully they come up with a few solid standalone episodes.

It was mentioned in the last season too. I reckon they get a HANDSome cut

Mobius

I agree it felt like there was almost too many minor plots in that episode. I guess we'll see which are continued.

I was half expecting one of the women auditioning at the Netflix office to walk into the big glass windows behind them.

I was expecting that so much that I was almost unable to concentrate on anything else going on.

It's kind of crazy that a HBO show has a plot involving selling a show to Netflix, including big Netflix logos and advertisements for Netflix shows all over it (that Stranger Things clip almost took up the whole screen).

Yeah, I wondered about this too. I guess since the Seinfeld deal between Netflix and Larry David, they've kind of got an open relationship? HBO is presumably the one listlessly wanking in the corner.

beanheadmcginty

Albert Brooks mentioned Amazon Prime too. Maybe Larry thinks it's funny to see what he can get away with.

Does anyone have any tips for how to watch this?  I can't use torrents.

Twonty Gostelow

If you mean legitimately the first episode is already on Now TV.

Replies From View

I can't afford another subscription service just for this one show.  I'll find a way.

Haven't watched the new episode yet but I just saw this list and feel I have to share it - https://t.co/bxx9rsKVb9

Am I massively out of step with the general opinion of what good Curb is? There's only two episodes from seasons 1-3 in that list and they've included episode 1 of season 10 which I hated. Thoughts?

The Palestinian Chicken episode was a blast. I haven't watched it again, so it might be one of those that doesn't work second time around, but I'd say it's absolutely one of the best and definitely worth a watch. Like all the best CYE episodes, you get a very strong sense that LD is having a great time making it. There's an energy there.

The Doll is fantastic too, the business with the head. Wonderful. I miss seeing Larry and Jeff being central to scenes. It's a shame J has been relegated to supporting actor in the last couple of seasons. The Freak Book ep (not in this list) was gut-bustingly funny because of the bawling and carrying on between those two like kids

thugler

I like the ski lift episode. That's fairly late i think. But i think maybe 3-7 are best. The seinfeld season is the last properly good one. Not many truly good ones lately

dr beat

Thought it was ok, although I didn't have particularly high expectations.  Agree that it felt like it was trying possibly to set up too many future strands.  I thought Lucy Liu was ok.  It felt this time that they might address Larry's mortality more directly in this season rather than carry on as if he's 20/30 years younger, which is one criticism I heard about S10.

That's a very good point. He's nearly as old as Bob Einstein was when he died (and the absence of Richard Lewis in this episode did make me wonder ...), but as a character Larry's really not evolved much, if at all, over 20 years and 10 seasons.

This episode made it clear we can expect more of the same (i.e. minor couch spill confrontations), but it'd be nice to see something a little more reflective. Maybe it's coming, maybe it's not. I'm actually fine with either decision, since it'd be a huge risk to try and tackle anything a bit more lofty at this point, and honestly it's not what anyone watches Curb for.
