Not many people know I post here. And certainly none of my friends. It's sort of my sanctuary where I can moan about things, including people I know or have knew.

So imagine my horror when I logged onto my school's Facebook page and saw one of my posts - from almost three years ago - on there in the middle of a discussion about the antics of three boys I vaguely knew there. The mistake I made was using their nicknames in the order they  were usually used so someone has obviously put it into Google and found my post.

Oh dear. As I've mentioned before my name on here was a school nickname too and although it was only a few people who used it for a brief period, anyone who was there at the same time as me would be easily able to surmise it was me, even without reading any of my posts.

Which I bloody hope they don't. I've said some personal and sometimes insulting stuff and although I have erred on the side of caution sometimes (like not giving the full name of the kid who shat himself in a games lesson) there are others who would be able to work out I'm talking about them. And unlike the kid who shat himself in a games lesson, haven't since died.

I'm tempted to change my name on here but I'm going to hold firm for a couple of days in the hope the post on the school site isn't spotted by certain people. If it is I'd just like to say... it's all true and you can't beat me up now cos I'll call the cops.

Whoops! Whatever happened to internet security? Anyone else on here had their secret CaB lives uncovered?

Ach, that's a tough one. I'm sure many people now consider internet forums to be a relic of yesteryear so I reckon it probably wouldn't even cross their mind that someone they know might contribute to one, especially one with a relatively niche premise, but I guess if something comes up in a Google search then that's that.

I'd be pretty mortified if most people I know read my posts here, not because I've been bitching about anyone, but I've shared some fairly crass and vulnerable stuff about myself - I've always liked how warm, open and non-judgmental this little community is for the most part, as you say it's like a safe haven where you can be incredibly silly or vulgar but also emotionally open, under cover of anonymity. (I mean, I'm silly and vulgar and emotional IRL too but my friends deserve a break now and then.) Also there's discussions about some stuff on here which would just never come up among most people I know (mainly comedy and music topics).

Also I don't think my work would be too impressed with the lack of respect I've expressed towards certain public figures over the years, although I'd be surprised if there aren't any other CaBbers in the company.

As mentioned in another thread recently, my brother once clocked that I was browsing the site and cheerfully indicated he knew of it, but didn't mention it any further. And last year I was with a friend at the pub one day and we were Googling something (a news item) on their phone, and one of the first results happened to be CaB, which weirdly made me feel a bit flustered momentarily.

I deliberately don't use my old username which was indelibly linked to my real life identity. I'm sure finding anything incriminating amongst inane twaddle would be like finding a needle in a haystack but still much potential for embarrassment.

So do I. Although on the same thread very near to where my piece has been posted there is a comment from a friend's younger sister. She'd definitely know who I was just by reading my username and description. I can only imagine she hasn't seen it because I know her quite well these days and she's the type who would ask.

So fingers crossed.

Once I was on Reddit, talking about SEO, as exciting as my life is. And I said something like "ironically I don't actually care how well my site is ranking on Google or put any effort into it, because I get my clients through word-of-mouth and networking." And some guy took it upon himself to decide that I was a scammer based on that comment.

I assume he then put my Reddit username into Twitter and found a Tweet about something I had written and that had gotten many upvotes and been crossposted to /r/bestof etc, and the Tweet had been liked by only one person - me - as exciting as my life is. So then he discovered my Twitter.

I'm not exactly sure how he discovered my real name though, although I do know it was possible to do so through Twitter with enough effort. He then found my business page and the name and picture of my then newborn child, which I had posted on my business page, and made comments in reference to them.

This was all first thing on a Monday, when I was working hard for my mofugging clients and he was dicking around doxing someone.

Upon realising, I nuked my Reddit account and deleted my Twitter account. However he still continued to make comments across Reddit referencing me. Eventually I complained enough to Reddit and his account was deleted.

Maybe he's still out there, goading me, but I am unaware as I no longer know his Reddit username.

...

my brothers would know my old username on old forums, but I would hope they would have a very passing interest in what I wrote. I know a few of their usernames too, and I also don't care

Ditto.  It was even the same as my e-mail address.  An absolutely stupid schoolboy error when I should have known better after being on various forums since the late 90s.

I try to keep things reasonably vague so as not to rouse any suspicions and I only go into depth about "crowd pleaser" subjects (such as a work mate's orgy group) if I'm fairly confident they won't be picked up by third parties and/or traced back specifically to me.

Also, as I've reported many times on here over the years, I have to be super careful about details of my professional life especially as I'm 99.9999recurring% sure that one of the senior managers at work (not in my department, but we've both worked there long enough to know each other) is also a member on here, albeit sporadic posting and mostly limited to Oscillations.

Despite the empty headed username error, I've always been very aware - right from day 1 on the first ever forum I joined (so long ago I can't even remember what it was now, though it was likely Rotten Tomatoes [when it was good, pre-IGN) I assumed that whatever I wrote would be visible and traceable forever.

non capisco

Couldn't really give a tin shite about anyone knowing my identity (posted pictures of my stupid face on here a few times and there's a link to my Twitter account to the left of every post that I don't remember why I put there but can't be arsed to remove) but it was slightly jarring last week when I saw a screenshot of an old CaB post of mine in a Facebook 'London oddities' group I'm a member of, me bollocking on years ago about those blokes who used to dress up as Sylvester the Cat and mime with saxophones to 'Part Time Lover' at Victoria Station. Same sense of "It's my beloved CaB....in the wrong place!" as when I first saw Bobby Treetops looking at CaB at work having not realised he posts here too/even knew about 'my forum'.

Jockice

One of the few people I know who knows I post here is a relative of mine, who is also a member. We found out about it during a chat about Chris Morris and we know each other's usernames. Our paths don't really cross on here though as he only posts sporadically these days (he was more active before I'd even heard of the place) and on subjects that don't interest me.

Actually when I say he's one of the few, he's possibly the only one. There is someone who currently works at my old workplace but I'm not sure of his or her identity or even if I actually know them.

I'm Facebook friends with a few Cabbers but we first met here. And as far as I'm aware that's it. And will hopefully stay that way.

Better than that, I've just changed my personal text. That'll throw people off the scent. And I'll still be almost unique among posters on here.

Get admin to delete the post (and any quotes later in the thread if there are any) then if there's a confrontation challenge them to find the post. But also get admin to delete this post (and any quotes thereof) just so there's no evidence of any shenanigans.

Shit like this is why every online identity I use is a burner, pretty much.

The Mollusk

I changed my username here partly because my old one is my IRL nickname (but mostly for other reasons), but the last fm profile linked under my avatar also uses that name so I'm not massively arsed. Just wanted to add an extra degree of separation in case an employer viewed my Facebook profile which then algorithmically made me a suggested page on Instagram where I use a similar nickname and then one day they got a random google result of some guy going off about how people who get on the train before allowing others off first should be shot point blank in the face.

Lots of my friends know I post here though, I don't mind about that whatsoever. Some of my/the internet's finest work is here after all, it's worth sharing.

Jockice

Well, I've been Jockice on several forums since the early days of the century and haven't been publicly exposed as yet. The first forum I went on was a disability one and I originally used my real name until something went wrong and I had to re-register under another name. Jockice was the first thing that came into my mind. It was only about three or four mates who ever called me it. My usual school nickname was Jock, which I hated but - unless you're Sting - you don't get to choose your own nickname.

However a few weeks ago someone who used to post on that site asked if she could interview me for her webpage (dunno why,  I'm not remotely significant) and was slightly perturbed when she posted the result - which included a reference to having been Jockice - on my Facebook page.

And as for the school thing, I don't go on that page much. I only looked at it because a friend mentioned a former member of staff dying. And my post from here appeared a couple of weeks ago and as yet nobody has commented on it. So maybe people just don't care. I mean I left the place in 1984 and there has been a lot of water under the bridge since then. It was a bit jarring seeing one of my posts totally out of context but if someone wants to go to the trouble of reading through all my ramblings on various subjects to find out if I've insulted them, more fool them basically.

So sod it. If you just put Jockice into Google I don't come up, so they'd have to put this site's name in as well. I'll take that risk. But if you don't hear from me again I've probably been murdered.

I do all my Facebook stuff under my own name with pictures and everything and I've been massively insulting about some public figures on there - rather strangely the only ones that people have really taken offence to were pretty anodyne comments about James Corden and Emlyn Hughes - so I've probably fucked up any job prospects anyway unless I was to delete the whole page or change my name on it. But I can't be arsed and I'm probably unemployable nowadays anyway.

My wife nearly caught me browsing CaB once, but I thought quickly, shut the laptop and told her I was just looking at pornography.

Oh I don't know. The fact that you've got a girlfriend (you mentioned it once a while ago) makes you quite the ladies' man around here. Apparently you can make a decent living as a male escort. https://www.gentlemen4hire.com/male-escorts/ My favourites on there are the middle-aged Sun reader lounging by a pool and the bloke posing with a machine gun.

I used to post on popbitch messageboard in the 90s. God knows why - I didn't live in that London, and never went anywhere I was likely to see any celebrities with their cocks out, or anything like that. I was bored at work a lot, obviously, and got to chat with a load of other anonymous people about stuff. I thought a lot of them were funny, etc...

Anyway, one of the regular threads on a Friday was 'what are you doing at the weekend' - so one week I said what I was doing that weekend.

And, while doing the thing I was doing that weekend, the friend of the friend with whom I was doing it asked me if I was on popbitch. And it turned out he was too... he worked in the media in London, and was a more 'senior' member of the board than me. But the moment he asked, a kind of chill went down my spine. Of course, he was very discreet.

Anyway, I think it's odd that there are two types of people on the internet - people who know that anonymity online is valuable, and needn't be sinister, and people who'll never understand that.

So - Jonny5000 if you're reading this - hello!

Couple look like they need an escort - to escort them from the building! Right Moatys

Is that what women find attractive? Middle aged builders who look like they'd be a bit aggy after a couple of pints?

I'm assuming that having sex with men or having other intimate encounters with men is an implicit part of being a male escort. might stick to marketing

Popbitch once had a piece about being in the same pub as a bunch of freaks. I think they described it as being like that bar scene from Star Wars

Then someone from Ouch, the BBC's disability site, realised that it was them that the Popbitchers were talking about. With hilarious consequences. Well, quite a bit of bitching on their (now closed) messageboard.

Kind of.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/ouch/opinion/somebodys_watching_me.shtml

It was a cruel place, you're right - but it wasn't 'a piece' (PB is a newsletter, but it WAS a newsletter and a messageboard - the words he quotes were from the messageboard).

An individual (going by the name of Hawkus) posted the thing quoted in the article I've linked to. I can't remember what the response on the day was, but after it was quoted, I seem to remember Hawkus was roundly and soundly mocked forever more and whenever it seemed appropriate.

Ta for that. I wasn't quite sure if I remembered it correctly (and I was waiting in the car for the others to turn up for a funeral do while writing it and they arrived just as I was finishing it) but apart from the article there was quite a bit of talk about it on the Ouch messageboard afterwards. I've had dealings with Damon - who wrote the piece - in the past though. He is a bit of a strange one'even if you discount his blindness.
