Yeah, I remember reading some chat on the Ouch boards about it.

I'm not defending Hawkus, or PB - but I doubt this place was much better back then.

I've actually just been browsing the few pages of messageboard which survive on the Wayback Machine archives to remind myself of it all... and of course it's hard to read - but most of it's in-jokes you're not supposed to take at face value (the homophobia is definitely ironical, for instance), and I can also see some of the other stuff being called out (as they say these days).

The email/newsletter is still worth the occasional glance. The current one is a 2021 Obit round-up.

Yeah, I do read and mostly enjoy Popbitch. It's just that sometimes they went too far. Like the time they posted a link to a picture of a severely disabled young woman with a caption along the lines of her being a 'hot date.' That was a few years ago though and they haven't done anything as tasteless (and frankly unfunny) since then.

Small Man Big Horse

I've spoken about to most of my friends over the years, and they know I go to meet ups and things like that, and I wouldn't be bothered if they looked at my posts nowadays, most of them are either film or comedy related anyhow. But I'd be mortified if some of them were to look at the posts I made from, well, 2006 - 2013 really, especially during the (long) periods where I  was single. Ah well, at least the big board crash in 2004 led to the posts I made with the username that was my actual name have been long lost, which is something.

Jockice

You mean Small Man Big Horse isn't your real name?

Quote from: jobotic on January 11, 2022, 09:30:15 AMCall yourself IceJock in real life.

I was thinking more along the lines of The Artist Formerly Known As Jockice. Or Sex Symbol. Because I have a girlfriend.

Just checking, but is the "jock" in your username because you have a girlfriend?

Quote from: Voltan (Man of Steel) on January 11, 2022, 11:25:11 AMOh I don't know. The fact that you've got a girlfriend (you mentioned it once a while ago) makes you quite the ladies' man around here. Apparently you can make a decent living as a male escort. https://www.gentlemen4hire.com/male-escorts/ My favourites on there are the middle-aged Sun reader lounging by a pool and the bloke posing with a machine gun.
I'm guessing the former doesn't get many offers from Scouse girls.

I suspect you're right.

I don't know what's more offensive, that rag or the shite lighting.

Not yet, but if I am given advance warning of my death I will change it to that by deed poll.

For me those would be, respectively, the second and third most offensive things in that photo.

Kankurette

What's the first, his face?

The man in general. I don't want to malign the bloke (even though he did put that pic of himself on a male escort site) - he might be a great bunch of lads but there is something gammon-esque about him. Still, I've been wrong before. Many times. Every day.

Quote from: gilbertharding on January 11, 2022, 12:53:53 PMI used to post on popbitch messageboard in the 90s. God knows why - I didn't live in that London, and never went anywhere I was likely to see any celebrities with their cocks out, or anything like that. I was bored at work a lot, obviously, and got to chat with a load of other anonymous people about stuff. I thought a lot of them were funny, etc...

Anyway, one of the regular threads on a Friday was 'what are you doing at the weekend' - so one week I said what I was doing that weekend.

And, while doing the thing I was doing that weekend, the friend of the friend with whom I was doing it asked me if I was on popbitch. And it turned out he was too... he worked in the media in London, and was a more 'senior' member of the board than me. But the moment he asked, a kind of chill went down my spine. Of course, he was very discreet.

Anyway, I think it's odd that there are two types of people on the internet - people who know that anonymity online is valuable, and needn't be sinister, and people who'll never understand that.

So - Jonny5000 if you're reading this - hello!

SIGH. Hello

Dex Sawash

Electronician and that dog's man and now we went and scored ourselves Jonny5000 from popbitch
