Stewart Lee appearing on James O'Brien's podcast [split topic]

Have listened to the podcast and although I enjoyed it, anyone who's already familiar with the Stewart Lee story will learn nothing new.

Proactive

It's really made me want to immediately go out and vote for a centrist politician though. Any elections coming up? Even parish council or something would sate me.

Incidentally, I only learned the other day that 'How I Escaped my Certain Fate' was a Mission of Burma tune

Can someone please make an apolitical James O'Brien thread for people to share all their apolitical thoughts about James O'Brien.

Quote from: somersetchris on January 14, 2022, 12:14:05 AMIt is absolutely baffling, and one of the most annoying things about this forum, that with much of the world veering to the right and genuine fascists getting close to power, so many of you seem to save most of your hatred for liberals who are not left wing enoughh for you, like you would rather see Jacob Rees Mogg in charge than Keir Starmer. You're like a load of deluded, self-important students who cannot accept that socialists will never be in charge no matter how many tantrums you throw. And part of it is the fault of people who keep throwing stones at their own fucking side.

Politicians of which political ideology implimented the policies that lead to the greatest level of income inequality since World War One and a rise of ethno-nationalism in Western states?

Maybe if my house was full of rats I'd be less mad at the rats and more miffed at the man who nailed rashers of bacon to the skirting boards.

No idea why people don't like this humble asker of questions and seeker of truth.

Of course you could be charitable and attribute a touch of irony or self-satirisation. But that would mean you'd never heard his radio show.

I agree with you in one sense, which is that too often people let perfect be the enemy of good, and sit on their arses come election day. I reiterate that if you're of voting age and you don't vote, you are part of the problem. Go get fucking registered and don't be so bloody lazy. Voting is such a powerful weapon that Republicans in America do their damnedest every election to make sure that black and indigenous people can't do it.

But "Keir Starmer looks like he's always about to piss or come and the rest of Labour have an eye on their post-Government careers, suckling at capitalism's teat" doesn't translate to "fuckit, let the Tories stay in power". That's unfair. Not bothering to vote translates to eternal Tory rule, everybody.

Quote from: Kelvin on January 14, 2022, 10:00:15 AMThis may be true in some situations, but in fairness, James O'Brien is a massive prick, and Stewart Lee is a relatively political comedian, so it doesn't seem unreasonable to discuss these types of things in a thread about the two of them doing an interview. And it doesn't seem unreasonable to question Lee's politics (which I'm sure are more left wing than O'Brien's) when he's enthusiastically endorsed this cunt on his blog. It's relevant to how we view the political themes in his stand up.

Yeah, I guess I don't disagree with any of that. Though I do think that, whilst there's obviously plenty of politically-themed content in Stew's stand-up material, he does seem to try to avoid nailing his colours to a mast, as he's entitled to do. I think he's even said before that this is because he doesn't know enough about and isn't engaged enough with party politics to form a proper opinion (he might've touched on this in the Sayle interview actually).

Quote from: Old Nehamkin on January 14, 2022, 10:15:14 AMI'm not convinced at all that a podcast interview with James O'Brien can be classed as "a piece of art" or that it's possible to separate politics from a discussion of said interview given who James O'Brien is and the apparent political overlap between him and Lee.

Hopefully my qualification made it clear that I was using 'art' in it's loosest, most perfunctory sense. And I'm not sure how apparent the overlap is. Maybe when I listen I'll be disappointed by Stew agreeing the fuck out of everything JOBbie says about keeping progressiveness at bay, but I'm hoping for a largely apolitical hour.

Quote from: Old Nehamkin on January 14, 2022, 12:30:26 PMAnd left-wingers have famously never attempted to compromise or ally with liberals either. Who could forget Corbyn's ruthless purges of anyone even slightly to the right of him.

Wait - I thought all those people resigned so they could attempt a coup.

Or are you being ironical? I lose track.

Weirdly, and presumably because I'm an idiot, it has never occurred to me that I could use my podcast app to download individual episodes of a podcast without subscribing to the whole thing, but I've just done that now.

couldn't agree more, so much for the tolerant left.

Interesting clip - at 3:30, talking about his level of fame an influence, he says he doesn't feel at all famous and, after JOB disagrees:

QuoteTo be honest, I probably need to be more aware of that. Because I think that some problems are caused by the fact that I don't really appreciate the impact that things have.

I wonder if that was about the ridiculous level of fuss over putting Linehan on his list. It would be nice to think that Lee is upset that he might have caused pain to someone (no idea how well he knew Linehan pre-bananas, if at all).

It was irony.

Old Nehamkin

Yeah sorry I was trying to make the point that left-wingers attempting concilliation with liberals and getting shafted/purged for their troubles is the dynamic that usually plays out in real life rather than the reverse.

It's probably circling back to the things he's said before that when playing 'Stewart Lee the comedian' as an embittered failure who hates more mainstream comics like Michael Mcintyre and Russel Howard has different connotations now he's more acclaimed and can be viewed as punching down.

Good interview - as ever I could listen to Stu for hours - never heard JOB before but seemed tolerable

Enjoyed this, but Christ that interviewer was boring.

DrGreggles

I saw that Stew was playing Norwich this weekend, and that's relatively easy for me to get to, so I thought I'd see if I could get a ticket.

Sold out.

I know, I'll try on one of those ticket resale sites.

Nothing.

Then, a few hours ago, I got an email from the Theatre Royal telling me about their COVID rules for my "visit tomorrow".
Seems I bought a ticket in 2020 and forgot about it.

I'm guessing - Covid, therefore ventilation, therefore a load of windows left open in the studio, therefore the coat?
