the Fallen

Oh, I want someone popular with Tory MPs

I want them to hit a sweet spot of Tory myopia but totally unelectable in the eyes of the voting public

Mr_Simnock

I want Truss, her incompetence is at super sayan levels, get her in

Sending a message about diversity may make sense to the upper echelons of the party, but it won't play with the rank & file who think having had two female leaders is quite enough diversity for one millennium.

It seems to me that they rarely end up with the "best" leader or even the one you'd expect. The front runners cancel each out and you end up with some nonentity or catastrophe, or there's some other factor.

The idea that Thatcher would be succeeded by Major would have been risible tight until it happened. Hague would never have been leader if Portillo hadn't lost his seat. The circumstances behind IDS's elevation are as forgotten as is his leadership itself. Then when Howard came in he was the obvious choice but a disaster. Cameron... well, it took a while but he became a disaster eventually. When Gove and Johnson effectively cancelled each other out in 2016 the remaining choice was Leadsom which made it easy for May to sweep in although again like Major the idea she'd ever be PM was ludicrous.

Note that in all the above I'm talking about how they led the party, not the country - those that got the chance - which in every instance was just plain disastrous for millions!

shed be a bit like biden really.

There is no way that Johnson's support base carries over to someone called Patel or Sunak. It could plausibly be Sunak, but he won't win an election. The diverse front bench is only there because its two major figures, Rees-Mogg and Johnson himself, are on-the-record racists.

I could see a non-white Tory leader win an election after Cameron, but after May or Johnson? Joking.

Me too. And a decentralisation/free market ideologue to boot. Make those ideas look silly on camera some more, Liz. Go on you fucking sputtering Randroid.

GoblinAhFuckScary

the drama is OFF THE SCAAAaaaAAaale

this is the weirdest fucking media coup

pigamus

Incidentally, why the fuck did they have to schlep to Tesco Metro like common scum? Doesn't the government have a wine cellar?

idunnosomename

That Tesco in Portcullis House is fucking tiny. I would've gone to Trafalgar Square personally

The thinking is the staffers hoped that by going a bit farther afield - a Co-op on the Strand - they'd therefore avoid scrutiny.

Yes that is what I said.  Good point though about some centre-left people that might be swayed due to the man-in-suit-that-will-not-tax-my-assests effect i.e. people like James O'Brien.  However they have Starmer now and whilst I know every can't think of anything else but angry memes that changes the shape of things considerably.

I can't be 100% sure but I suspect Starmer has already been courted by the press and has been given the a cautionary nod - it's tricky, there are a few things he is doing still which don't add up in this theory however I think its unlikely the rightwing press would be behaving as they would without a risk assessment on letting Labour in.

TrenterPercenter

Ay up has liz got a chekky pint on the go here?

Could she... would she... ?

" Penny Mordaunt has been named as one of the front-runners to replace Boris Johnson as Conservative leader if the prime minister resigns."

Don't know much about his principles if any but Sunak could counter a lot of prejudice with strong doses of
- there is no racism (except Labour antisemitism), hard work conquers all, I didn't get where I am today by the UK being a racialist endeavour
- close are boarders
- zero tolerance for woke nonsense, men aren't women tho

And racists love being onside with a 'good one' to show they aren't racist

I still can't fucking get over the fact that Sunak is richer than the Queen. It feels like there should be something in ancient British law that says no PM is legally allowed to be richer than the Queen.

I was confused by her transcribing of that sentence but I think she meant:

It's not if, now, but when.

Pedantry aside, it's all so fucking pathetic.

Another top-ten CaB hate figure there. I keep having this urge to shout "Bingo!" or "House!" or even "You've sunk my battleship!" 🤪

But, seriously, what the fuck is she on about? WHO decides when their ducks are in a row? The Stonecutters?

She really is a soothsayer when it comes to Borid's end of tenure.

It's just weird to spend most of your political life actively helping cunts like Johnson get elected and then gleefully wish he gets the boot.

Fuck's the point like.

Didn't know he was TBEU, thought he might be a lone gun.

Like him either way. He gave me my own 'good vibes' avatar and everything.

Fuck's the point like.
When Blair was in power, her and every other tedious "media" person could pretend everything was okay, because - for some reason - they had nice comfortable jobs, their bottom lines weren't affected at all, and the bad stuff that the government was doing was mostly about people overseas.

The world has changed a great deal since the financial crisis of 2007/8, and because they never knew what they were talking about in the first place, it's left that whole class of people foundering, ane eventually realising that the thing they care about most of all is having the world be the same as it was back in the late 90s. People listened to them! Poor people had no way of making themselves heard!

This means they're mostly opposed to the Tories (apart from the laws they introduce that lessen their own tax bill) but they're entirely opposed to anything one millimetre more left-wing than Blair was. Notice that intellectual titan Emma Kennedy isn't actually doing anything to fight the Tories, but she did a fuck of a lot to fight against Labour under Corbyn.

I think this would have been true a few years ago, but I don't think this level of nuance survives the "get brexit done" reductions and culture war battering of Johnson. Big Dog appeals to the voters' id, "levelling up" and all the slogans work on exactly the same level that "ugh, foreign name" does. To hang on to Johnsons support his successor will have to hit the lowest common denominator just as hard. (Unless Starmer shits himself and eats the shit, rubs the shit in the hair on camera - which we can't rule out)
