Overall, a delightfully silly comedy and let's hear it for the unsung hero of the piece, Robert Bathurst.

Wholehearted agree with you on this.

Even the slightly shambolic set ups  have grown on me now. I've found that the first 15 mins of it tends to have all of the good stuff in it and the second half tends to get a bit distracted and potters about a bit. The good stuff is really good though.

Michael Ball seems like a good chap too.
It won't make me buy any of his records though...

Thought the last ep was great after a disappointing penultimate episode.  Totally agree about Ball, surprised how great he was in his.

Hear, hear - but I can't remember him featuring in the last ep. Is that right? On the other hand, I liked that there was more interaction between Toast and Jane Plough.  I think it needs Toast to riff off her and Bathurst's character more regularly, rather than just having a token scene as it seemed in the earlier eps.

I'd love to see a second series, this first one wasn't perfect by any means but it has a good sense of its comic voice.  It did seem to hang together more clearly as it went on.

Tracy Ann Oberman can butter my toast any time she likes.

Still ambivalent about this show. Stuck with it for the occasional silly bit (the american agent) but mostly sat through it wondering how much the tiles cost in that shared kitchen. If the writers were a little more adventurous I would watch a second series.

It was also good that a pudgy middle aged man got his oats on a regular basis.

DrGreggles

What is the deal with Arthur Matthews and 'Ghost Town' anyway?
He obviously sees the comedy potential in it.

I thought this week's was great, after a really disappointing episode last week with the submarine.

As others have said its just a silly half hour, and there's not much wrong with that. Again it is true, as previously mentioned, that Matt Berry has one trick, but its a great trick.

Having read about the full frontal nudity in the last episode exclusively on 4OD I buried my hatchet and confirmed I was over 16 and hit the play button. Michael Ball was good in it.

Johnny Yesno

I've just finished watching this and I thought it was pretty good. A nice combination of daft and weird. I really liked the first episode with Kikini Bamalam - the Forsythe face and one black hand were creepy and funny in equal measure. It's a shame the standard declined a bit over the series and that it didn't really go anywhere. I'd watch a second series if it got recommissioned, though.

I wonder if Plough's agent/asian confusion in the pilot episode was a nod to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJPTqWtv8IQ

Nice to see it has support inside Channel 4.

I thought that there was a bit of a sag mid-series, but the last couple of episodes with Toast's erotic fiction and Michael Ball were just as good as the opening episodes.  Even the weaker episodes had a couple of laugh out loud moments.

I don't think it really matters that it doesn't really go anywhere in terms of a story arc or whatever critics like to bang on about.  Each episode is just a self-contained little daft adventure.

Great news, and good to see C4 not being totally preoccupied with ratings.

they must've done the last ep on 4OD thing to guage interest. Ratings must be so inaccurate, how many people have that box which does ratings. No one. NAE FUCKER

Christ, had to go through 12 pages of threads and search each one for 'Toast' to find this, the technology on this website is appalling. I've forgotten what I wanted to say now.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

It's coming back tomorrow night. Was that it?

dr_christian_troy

Maybe a new thread for series two?

amnesiac

THAT'S RIGHT! New series tomorrow everyone. The Palm De Rose AWARD winning Toast is back for a new series.

Half time.

Just one minor complaint so far, in the S1 sex scenes you got to see Tracey Oberman's smashing tits from the front but so far you only see her head, seems deliberate.

Beagle 2

Blimey, pretty much laugh-free that one. I've really been looking forward to it as well. I sort of liked the idea of the tour bus argument, but it didn't really amount to anything, and I just kept thinking of the expense of hiring the buses for the day and then not bothering to come up with something better for the scene.

Maybe a 'one series is enough' kind of show.

Danger Man

The first series won the Golden Rose of Montreux.

Much as I enjoyed it, I can't help thinking that European comedy must be at an all time low if Toast is the best of show.

Danger Man

ep2 is up on 4OD for anyone desperate....

It feels like Ed Reardon meets The Prisoner

Laugh free....almost as if they had the choice between 'We won an award, lets go even better' vs 'We won an award, we can do whatever the fuck we want' and chose the latter.

j_u_d_a_s

This series main problem is that it only has a vague idea of what it's trying to be. Is it big and broad or naturalistic. Is it set in the real world or one of whimsy. Is Toast an idiot we laugh at or get behind.

Danger Man

CaB's White Knights had better steer clear of the second part of S2 E2 as it is extremely problematic.

(and almost as unfunny as the first half of S2 E2)

I was always thinking about the buses the whole time, and how they got away with an 'anti-gay' sign on the side, and if anyone noticed, and what part of London it was (seemed to be South/ not an area I am familiar with).

The worst bit was the pornstar name thing, in 2014, although the joke seemed to be that Bathurst had a pornstar name whilst being ignorant of the ancient meme. I thought the punishment he'd dish out to Purchase would be to get anally rodgered but maybe that was a bit too dark.

Toast's always felt like a live action Viz strip.

chand

That was the first episode I've seen of this show, and it was really bad. It was written like they'd just discovered the comedic power of the word 'prostitute' and tried to make an episode that used it the maximum amount of times.

steveh

It was a pretty ropey script, but there were still moments of daftness that made me laugh, like the megaphone conversation on the buses. And Clem Fandango.

dr beat

Incredibly stupid throughout, which is what I wanted really.  I liked Robert Bathurst's pornstar name gag and the set pieces.  The ending was a bit disappointing however, they could have done something more imaginative.  Was that

doing Boris Johnson's voice?

Yet to see the next ep but I hope they don't have too much Ray Purchase in this series, as I don't find him that interesting a character.
