Exclusive to Epic. That is the Epic who said that games would be cheaper due to having lower fees to publishers than Steam. The mask dropped very quickly.

I've just escorted Aerith home, and her garden is just so beautiful ... but I'm wandering around there with her picking flowers and muttering 'die, bitch'.  This cannot be healthy.

Regarding the rest of what I've seen and done so far - it's incredible.  Once I got used to the battle system and general gameplay I really started to enjoy it.  The music arrangement is mindblowing, and the translation from simple aspects (the synchronised button pushing, anyone?) and locations (Sector 7 slums!) make me feel that yeah, this was worth the wait.

And I know he's a dead bad guy, but there is no limit to how hard I would fuck Sephiroth.

Really pleased to see you enjoying it. I absolutely loved it, lot of tears along the way. Can't wait for the next part.

C_Larence

Yeah it's wonderful, had very low expectations going into it, and don't have a soft spot for VII (in a just world IX would be the one that spawned spin offs and remakes) but was utterly charmed. The

is when I was fully convinced.

Cerys

I haven't got that far yet, but I am convinced that Chadley is a precocious little shit.

Urinal Cake

It's very underrated. I do have a feeling Square Enix is just going to quit after the next installment due to lack of sales.

On the other hand the next FF just looks like generic shit.

Cerys

They'd better bloody not quit.  I'll be having words if I don't get the opportunity to be stomped on by a massive green kaiju.

Roxy Robinson

No chance they'll quit. It's one of the fastest selling PS4 games, albeit the current total sales aren't less than XV. Exclusivity would have limited that, as well. Second one will do great. They'll defo finish it off or five million people would never buy a Square game again.

Some very odd decision making is going on at Square these days. More like a headless chicken, I would say: after the trouncing that their latest AAA title (Forspoken) received, rightly or wrongly (not sure how many reviewers played past the initial chapters, as people who played all the way through appeared to have a more positive view of the game), they showed no courage of conviction by dissolving the team behind it. For some reason the top exec has the notion that NFTs are the future of the company.

That said, repackaging their old hits; (FF I-VI pixel remasters, FFVII remake, Live A Live, Tactics Ogre Reborn [and rumours of a Final Fantasy Tactics remake], Front Mission "remakes" (upgraded reissues more like) + FFVII, VIII, IX & XII upgraded reissues) seems to be a safe bet whilst they flounder elsewhere.

When I look at the combat of XVI I get a bit worried, looks like Devil May Cry but all the footage so far seems to show enemies having massive health pools. Could be just something they've done for the trailers to show off more combat moves, could be bad design. But I have some faith in it - the producer is the guy who salvaged XIV and turned it from shit to gold. And tbh, the combat can't be any worse than XV's.

FFVII Remake's highlight is Rufus, the coin flip shit is amazing.

Yep, they're absolutely gonna finish the 3 part run. The issue is either gonna be that by the time part 3 comes out it'll feel old as fuck or both 2 and 3 will be delayed as much as the Avatar sequels.

The planned late 2023 release for part 2 seems absurd atm with how little has been shown

Feel like they botched the PC release; the timing was perfect but it was just expensive enough with enough negativity around the port to either put a lot of people off or pirate it.

oggyraiding

Epic exclusivity was a bad call, unless Epic paid them a fuckload in advance.

Urinal Cake

As NoSleep said there've been some real weird shitty decisions at Square. They've already committed to the format or Remake so hopefully they should keep to it. But Square-oof.

Cerys

They have to keep this remake going, if for no better reason than it giving me the chance to to see this fucking insipid bitch skewered through the torso.  I was hoping against hope that giving her a voice would make her tolerable, but no.  She doesn't shut the fuck up, and possession of a voice just means she repeats herself over ... and over ... and over.  Sephiroth?  She's over here, mate.  Don't mind me; I'll just look at this interesting stain on the floor while you Masamune the bint into planet-juice.

Cerys

The game is having its revenge on me with that bloody motorcycle chase out of Midgar.  Truly, I am shit at it.

Never gonna have a PS5 so never gonna play the remake. Never gonna play it, Lynn. :(

Cerys

Yeah, the remake has a truck in front of you which contains a gun-toting cunt.  I keep dying because of it.

I'm definitely curious to see where part 2 goes.  Obviously the whole rewriting history thing (I still would've liked to try a remake of the original game)

As to the rest of the series, I wandered into Game when I was bored and saw that the next one is due out next month - first time in FF history (well, since I heard about it for FF7) that I've cared so little that I literally had no idea the next one was almost out.  Honestly IMO 13 was alright but for the most part I think it never regained what it lost perhaps coincidentally when Sakaguchi left.

Remake of VII aside, the last Final Fantasy I bothered to finish was X - bought XII, XIII and XV and just couldn't muster up any will beyond certain points. I doubt I got halfway through any of them.

The run of VI, VII and VIII is brilliant (not sure I'm willing to pay £15 for the PS4 port of VI, mind! If they put it on PS Platinum, I'll sure give it another spin) and even with IX and X, where I wasn't quite as smitten, I still wanted to see the ending. Somehow, all the subsequent games have seem like chores.

Had a quick look at the Wiki entry for XVI and saw the lead character is named Clive. All together, now: "not for me"

I finished Forspoken and it was just a bit of a mediocre game. Combat was fun but that was about it. It also had quite a lot of odd stuff that killed immersion. In early game you have to feed four sheep in a mission. You give one food, screen turns to black, message telling you you fed it succesful. No animation, nothing. The reviews were quite fair imo.

NoSleep

That's why I said "more positive" rather than "favourable". It's still a bit spineless to put together an alleged dream team and sack them at the first hurdle. The good news is that Mr NFT has been given the chop as head honcho as well (maybe they're just purging his influence upon Squenix completely).

Lead character-name aside, XVI is under the helm of Creative Business Unit 3, run by Naoki Yoshida, the producer who saved FF XIV and the team behind that game, also my favourite FF. It has Soken on the music, the same localisation team, same producer and combat design by the guy who ran DMC5. I have 100% confidence in that team and in this game to be an absolute all-timer. It's also the first FF in a very long time to have had a relatively untroubled development period and they've been given all the touching-up time they need to make it the best it can be.

For more info on what happened with XIV and why Yoshida is so highly respected, I really recommend this 3-part NoClip documentary on the release, collapse and resurrection of that game because it's a hell of a story. That team turned an unmitigated disaster into possibly the best FF story / game of all time, right through to nailing the landing in Endwalker.

Yeah agreed. And with a bit more time in the oven Forspoken could have been quite good.

FFXII is probably worth another look, as the reissued versions have fixed things that people had issues with in the first version. I didn't have issue with the original version and it's the only FF I've replayed multiple times, trying the IZJS version as well as the more recent FFXII: The Zodiac Age on the Switch. Lots of people seem to have reappraised the game after its initial release and it's now seen as having been ahead of its time, pioneering concepts seen in later open world games. But I'm a Yasumi Matsuno (FFTactics/Vagrant Story/Tactics Ogre) fanboy and there's still enough traces of his original concept for the game to make it of interest to me.

I confess I remember absolutely nothing about it. I picked it up soon after release, and glancing over my shoulder, I can see the PS2 disc is still on the shelf (I should probably see if anyone is daft enough to buy all those, even if just for a quid a piece, as I wouldn't even know if a PS2 would work with my modern TV), but it didn't sink in at all on a story basis. XIII I tried but got sick of it being too "on rails" and XV I sunk a fair 30/40 hours in, but the characters eventually broke my will to continue.

oggyraiding

XII always felt like Bosh or Balthier should have been the main character.

Also re: XIII, I have been assured it opens up about 30-40 hours in, but I never made it that far without losing the will to live. Apparently the sequels are better.

Ah yeah... the TV I have is equipped with numerous ways to get a signal from various retro devices I own. That said, I'm sure there'll be such a thing as a PS2 to HDMI lead for sale somewhere out there.
