I always struggle when people include this line. I don't think it's true at all that constructive criticism gets banned. And it's hard not to infer that people saying this have themselves been banned and have a resentment towards Iain and Katherine for it.

Oh no i'd agree with the statement "Not ALL constructive criticism gets banned", on certain days he can be more than reasonable. But, especially during the start of the twitch stuff, people would suggest things to help him run the stream better, or discuss ideas for shows (after he'd ask the audience what they wanted to see), he'd rather rudely shut them down or just ignore them entirely and then, when the suggester came back a bit offended. he'd block them or time them out.

I mean, it's his show so he can work the front of house however he likes, but there are better ways to politely tell someone you wont be taking their advice/idea than just shouting at them and then getting the mods to get rid of them.

I've seen him time people out for 2-3 days because they said the patreon tiers didnt provide enough content and that they'd join the patreon if they streamed more when Iain asked people what they wanted to see on the patreon.

My own experiences I should add have been pretty civil if not VERY passive on his part, almost like answering something with a yes or no is WAY too much effort (even if he's the one asking the questions to begin with)

It's each to their own I suppose, but it just doesnt seem like a good way to grow an audience. it's not exactly a breeding ground for positive organic growth.

I'd agree with that. The increasingly depressing Talk Radio shows should have lead to a clean start with Twitch, but it didn't. Comment on the show in the chat channel which was less than positive was called out "on air", rather than being ignored.

I believe he and Kath hitching themselves to each other's masts has done bad things for both of their careers. It's not a double-act people have asked for, but it seems to be get one, get both in many things these days, and if nobody has asked for it, why buy it?

MojoJojo

I don't watch much twitch, but I think it's pretty normal to have (volunteer) moderators for the chat, at least at busier times. Moderating chat isn't really compatible with having a friendly host persona.

Ham Bap

I've been listening to the 2 hour live phone in shows he's been doing on his radio app.
They have been good and a throw back to the good shows he was doing earlier on, on Talk Radio.

Followed him on Twitch again as well and the show last night was good.
Was even thinking of subscribing on Patreon for a month, it's Christmas, but at £6.66, £8 after tax and for no great benefits what's the point.
I suppose it's supporting him if you want him to keep doing it.

Then he he said he's doing a Christmas show, but only for Patreons on the £20 and over tier, put me off.

But the content has been entertaining again from what I've seen, especially the phone-ins.

It's a shame, because Iain is great at what he does, but he does it best when he has a strong producer, and a proper contract that he has to fulfil. Employed (or freelancing), rather than off his own back. He's suffers from an ADHD, I think he said, which is probably why he has so many projects start off with good intentions, but which don't often pan out long-term.

It certainly doesn't help that speech radio in this country now fits into

News talk
Sports talk
Radio 4 drama/comedy etc.

There's little room for just playing around on air. The original version of the current incarnation of Talk Radio was meant to be the return of that kind of thing, and did carve out a small niche. It was never meant to be hugely successful - it existed mainly as a condition of a DAB multiplex license, and when UTV sold out to News Corp, they wisely flipped to try and commercialise the station. Makes sense, except if you like the likes of Iain Lee and Jon Holmes etc al, because they were immediately on borrowed time.

(Iain winning the awards helped, but I think that he stayed so long after the format flipped shows how much they respected him as a broadcaster, even when he was going against what they wanted him to do on air. Or at least he hinted they were asking him to change the show a lot more than he was willing, and he still survived for months.)

Quote from: Thosworth on October 19, 2021, 10:06:06 PMHe doesn't live a million miles away from me, and during his last year on the radio gave some very specific house-location-based anecdotes, so it was easy to narrow down. The fireplace on his Twitch stream basically confirms which side of the semi he lives on ... and no, it doesn't look like that photo.

He doesn't live a million miles away from me either. I found out his address by selling him an old dance music magazine cover CD that had some video clips of The 11 O'Clock Show on eBay.

I remember they printed his address in the court section of the paper last year for speeding. Which must be uncomfortable for him since that stalking business a few years back.

Covid's bad, but at least it wasnt another owl. They can do some lasting damage.

MrMrs

Why can't he see his kids? They don't live together?

Shared custody with his ex. He has covid. Or had it. But now they have it and he doesn't.

Read the other day that Chinese lanterns can kill animals; cows, birds, fish etc. There's a very sad picture of a dead barn own trapped inside one. Made me think twice before releasing mine into the wild yesterday.

He's binning off the Radio Anywhere stuff next month so that lasted about a month or 2.

Pity but expected really.

I never subscribed any money.
Was going to at one stage, not really sure what benefits I get from giving him money.

That's kind of been my problem since he decided to go his own way...the whole idea of supporting a project that, from the off has been built on the bedrock of "I don't want to do this anymore and I don't know how long this will go for" has really made it difficult to commit to anything. The radio stuff was the closest to the talk radio shows it got and with him canning it on the 23rd of Jan, its just another thing that could have worked with a bitore love that ultimately is getting binned before it even really left the crib.

He posted a massive post on the discord group earlier where he announced the closure of the radio station, reiterated that he's in the process of leaving the industry and that means thinning his projects down as he brings his career to a close. And then *somewhat ominously* he mentioned that the patreon tiers were going to be changing in the new year...

Surely the twitch shows got to go before spring?...he's been threatening to pull the plug for the last 6 months if they don't make more money...

Painting an absolutely pathetic picture here. What's the deal with this chap? Is he funny? He doesn't sound very funny.

Some people would say he was never funny and basically "failed up" into a position he now doesn't want to be in (and has been VERY public about that)

From my perspective? I think he has his moments and when he IS funny he really does scratch an itch in radio that doesn't really exist anymore.

He did 2-3 years on talk radio that swung wildly from incredibly awkward and painful listening to genuinely hilarious and his time on BBC 3 counties was much the same if not a bit cringy now.

He just seems to have a real habit of strangling projects in the crib the moment he even vaguely loses interest in them, which, when combined with his other bad habit of literally burning ALL the bridges he builds if he thinks he's been slighted even in the slightest has left him with ever decreasing circles with which to maneuver.

Like I say, this project was built on the foundations of "I don't want to be here, I'm literally doing it till I'm qualified as a counselor and then I'm done." And he seems to be struggling to even do that.

I used to be an avid listener. I stopped for a while when his drug addiction/suicide talk became a bit too close for me to tune in.

Now, I dip in if I'm not doing anything and I see he's streaming. But I can only deal with him in very small doses.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, he can be funny, but what he's doing now isn't a reflection of what he used to do. And you have to be quite selective on what he used to do because it hasn't aged all that well...

Rich Uncle Skeleton

he banned me from the chat for the name "My Splendid Balls", I don't think I even had a go at him. That's the "deal" with that arsehole. Your mileage may vary.

He was the (W)Anchor of the 11 o'clock show, which was shit.
He has done radio shows since, the best bits of which seem to be Bob Mortimer.
He doesn't like doing what he's doing, yet will ask for money to grudgingly do it.

This is what he put up on Youtube, so he's clearly proud of it, and it's from his purple period, apparently.

Apparently he's less self aware, and talks about himself more now he's free and not part of a professional commercial station, can't imagine it myself.

Belfield is a soulless psycho who I imagine took great pleasure on inflicting misery on someone who has clearly struggled with their mental health.

Feel for Lee. I hope this series he's doing brings him some degree of relief.
