You can read books because of the same attraction to a personality/brand though. I would argue that these are the more dangerous books because they're likely to be one of the few on the shelf.

Can attest, I read a lot of Christopher Hitchens as in my late teens/early-20s, and became absolutely insufferable for years. There's a similar sensation I feel going on in my head when I'm watching persuasive online videos to the mindset I had in those years. Maybe I'm drawn to a certain type of confident person, although I have never been into people like Peterson or Sam Harris, I find them nauseating.

I'm finding all the posts in this thread fascinating. I may not respond directly to things, but I read this thread thoroughly (my reading is getting a lot slower lately, though) and think about the stuff raised.

Hello everyone.

This is my favourite one.

I would watch a video where a person rebuts another video of someone else's Top 10 Farts Of The Month with their own Top 10 Farts Of The Month

I mean, who do you think makes up the majority of Zizek's audience? The man's already *sniff* a personality brand himself, albeit one with some substance to him.

Are you saying he's a cokehead?

Mister Six

At the very least he needs to see a good ENT specialist.

ProvanFan

Is it Shaun off Eastenders? Some people are just born bad.

I don't care. He does serious work in addition to his place as a popular intellectual, out of all his work a few of his concepts have gained traction beyond psychoanalysis and film studies where he's famous, and interpassivity is one of them.

He's considered a joke/reactionary as a talking head or culture commentator, and for good reason. But there are some areas where he has made considerable contributions and is still frequently cited. It's not just leftists, he's had a big influence on more conservative parts of media studies. Back in the day he was a major opponent of deconstruction and critic of Derrida, which won him quite a few establishment admirers. I think the funny thing now is that often Freudians/Lacanians hate him the most due to the perceived damage his school has done trying to rationalise their school of thought.

imitationleather

I don't think we should be talking about the Elvis of cultural theory so dismissively.

bgmnts

Isn't this academic bubble the same kind of youtube internet bubble you hate though?

Only the ones I don't think are good.

If you think I'm online writing about how everything popular and for general audiences is trivial and stupid, then having a day job high-fiving institutional academia for being clever don't worry I'm not that.

i think they hate also him because he's a marxist while psychoanalysts tend to be pretty conservative politically (in France at least) and yeah obviously because he actually reads the texts instead of parroting of few catchphrases.

the academic bubble is a fucking mess but overall Zizek's existence is a net positive, introducing people to new ideas without patronizing them too much. and he doesn't give a fuck about twitter drama, while the number of leftists in the media that are losing their mind over that is exponential

There was a major attack against him from a feminist psychoanalysis specialist a while back in France (you probably know about this) accusing him of suppressing the more radical part of his school of thought to maintain his prominence. This was notable because it was a rare example of psychoanalysis taking a position from the left and not from the right. The less said about Miller the better, conservative is an understatement.

(He also recently claimed never to have actually read much Lacan in French, but he might have been riffing)

i'm not aware of that but i can't say that surprises me.

Dore is now implying that the Shaun video was somehow funded by the CIA, which has got to rank at the top of the most ridiculous things he's ever said.

Sonny_Jim

I hope he didn't spend a lot on that mic setup because it sounds like shit.

oh yeah this is the latest. The CIA and MI6 are astroturfing "BreadTubers" to find information on antivaxxers, I mean concerned citizens who criticise the government's handling of the pandemic. Abigail Thorne is the face of the British end of the operation. Prince Charles is running it. No these rumours don't originate with a shady online "newspaper" written by someone funded by Russia, what are you talking about

PlanktonSideburns

If Charles was running it there would be a lot more Contrapoints videos about building regulations and conservation of Georgian architecture

i don't recall breadtube videos becoming reduced to majority twitter beefs or calling numbers phrenology. i remember the shaun video on what terfs on twitter had said about terry pratchett, but that was more of a jumping off point about the weird need some people have to assume someone they liked the work of *has* to agree with them in spite of all evidence to the contrary. and honestly rants about "twitter bad" are getting as insufferable as the most terminally logged on twitter posters. because either a) you're on twitter enough yourself to know all about it or b) you're just assuming that's all there is to something and you know what they say about assumptions.

Why are these UK "leftists" producing so much content that is primarily dedicated to US culture war shite like Jimmy Dore, and the War On Christmas? Considering the state of everything, are these the pressing issues? Of course they're not, but its the best way to grift because more Americans will click on those than would click on an actual journalist's report about foodbanks in the UK or the anti-protest bill. Boring stuff, huh? Let's talk about J K Rowling some more.

Twitter is bad and full of unqualified people making sweeping assumptions about everything under the sun, then those assumptions get collated into youtube videos. Which people watch and say, wow very informative stuff because the man wore two different hats in the video and did RLM jump cuts. Breadtube started with good intentions but its fucking awful now.

chveik

"breadtube is an op" is a naive take because they don't even need outside influence to suck

Astroturf rarely works that way, anyway. I guess we'll get to see more details when election years roll around again.

Poirots BigGarlickyCorpse

yes islamophobia has nothing to do with the uk, neither does andrew wakefield, or climate change, or transphobia

breadtube is a grift, that's why they put videos on youtube for free

Thank you for another dispatch from the Matrix.

Do you know what Patreon is? Anyway, I asked you not to bicker with me on this topic so please do us both a favour and go bingo card at someone else.

I presume they're the target audience, that's why.

As for it being a grift, most of these guys are patreon supported arent they? And just debunk right wing shite, or just address something that's topical in the online sphere (although HasanAbi constantly constantly talks about real world issues, at least he did and he's a twitch commentator not a youtuber). I dont get the feeling it's a grift.

g0m

Ah, sorry, I don't live in the UK, I'm one of those gaijin* grift targets, I'll recuse myself

T/N: gaijin means bloody hell
