Time is broken!

Just had to get this off my chest -

What the hell is the time?

The on screen clocks of all the TV channels seem to be around 11 seconds out (it was 8 yesterday when I first noticed it). eg when they change to 8:00:00, the time on my laptop will be showing 8:00:11

Is my laptop wrong?

According to this site - https://time.is - it's spot on. *

Is that site wrong?

This website has also been similarly off - I can no longer tell what timestamp will appear - a week ago it was 2 seconds 'early' (2pm on my laptop showed up as 1:59:58), yesterday it was around 8 seconds off.

I'll post this at precisely 7:12:00 to see what the current gap is . . .

. . . yep, 7:11:49 - just like the TV channels - 11 seconds adrift.

Is it the Russians? Has Dr Who broken a hole in time? . . . what is going on??

HELP!!

My laptop is 11 seconds slower too. But my phone is correct to those websites.

I think it's the Russians. Definitely.

I think that the Covid booster vaccine has caused it.

Don't let these human constructs of time constrict you, live by your own rules.

Icehaven

I use two computers in my office at work and one is 3 minutes slower than the other one. One is set to GMT and the other has no option to change the time, so I've no idea which one is actually right, although it's probably the GMT one unless there's something wrong with it. Obviously I go by the faster one when it's time to go home, but other than that it's not a huge issue.

Well I know what it's not and that's a fundamental property of the universe.

I don't get mine until February. I'll let you know if I end up 22 seconds out.

A couple of guys at work have been testing a smart watch for something and both reported that if it loses connectivity to their phones it becomes wildly inaccurate. We're assuming it's just some cheap arm gubbins with no realtime clock so relies on syncing with the phone regularly to keep itself in check.

Progress apparently, yet shitter than a £7 Casio in every way at it's primary function.

Time goes faster as altitude rises. Try putting your laptop on the floor.

A friend of mine has two cats and two timed feeding bowls, with one about a minute behind the other. Cat #2 always ends up spending 60 seconds being well jel.

Why have they been set with this discrepancy?  Don't get me wrong - I think it's good.

Video encoding delay, possibly - but 11 seconds seems like quite a lot. Maybe it's got wider over time and nobody's bothered to re-sync it?

The weird thing it's every news channel - ITV, SKY, BBC, GBNTV * - it's either they're all taking their time from some alternative source, or someone at the main transmitter has accidentally left a 10 second delay on.

Another piece of evidence - the time shown on the TV info guide (pressing 'i' on the remote) synchs perfectly with my laptop - ie out by 11 seconds on what the onscreen ticker-tape shows. I tried it on a couple of different TV's and ipads just to make sure it wasn't a problem with my laptop or TV.

I'm baffled!

* For some reason, RT seems to be 7 seconds out, compared to all the others at 11 seconds - what is going on?

olliebean

It must be a delay in the broadcast. Back when UHF was still a thing and you could compare one to the other, the digital broadcasts were several seconds behind. I guess due to video encoding and/or other digital processing.

The TV Guide data probably comes via a separate channel with no noticeable delay as there's minimal processing of the signal. Or maybe it gets its time directly from the internet, if it's a smart TV.

The live channels on iPlayer seem to be delayed by nearly 1.5 minutes, FWIW.

We live in the moment, the narrow part of the hourglass, maybe it is too narrow, try reaming it out.

That could be it regarding the TV - I probably just never noticed it before!

This website, though - am I the only one getting a different time on my posts compared what the time is on my laptop?

As someone who likes to post precisely to the minute for aesthetic (and possibly mild OCD) reasons, it's making my stuff look shoddy & half arsed!

Let's have another go . .  it'll be 5:47:00 when I press post . . . NOW!

OK - it's currently 13 seconds off.

Yep; 14 seconds off here. Looks like it's not just you with that.

daf

Ah, bless you mate - I was starting to worry my end was busted!

Time.is informs me my laptop is running 'exactly right', that is to say, 0.116 seconds fast. It has kept the correct time since I switched to Linux; it was always running up to 15 seconds ahead of itself under Windows.

Sidereal time is where it's at.

A sidereal day is 23 h 56 min 4.0905 seconds.

Seems like computer issues would be more in Silver's department.

I always assumed TV & radio was behind because it takes that long to encode the file, send it, etc.
I just checked 5Live and the stream is 8 seconds later than on medium wave.
