To Tattoo or not too Tattoo?

Mine were about $120-200 each. Not breaking the bank, and it's needles going in your skin not exactly something you want to cheap out on.

Cost is to do with the time they take more than anything, though most places have a flat fee you pay just for setting up the chair or whatever and I think if you're booking with a specific person it costs more than if you're getting some simple line work etc done like me. The studios also take a cut, while the actual people with needles can be freelancers leasing the space or employees etc etc.

It's like getting your hair cut (though I accept that's of limited anecdotal value here on CaB).

Never been to a tattoo parlour so just wondered.

Since Brexit, by the pound.

That looks like a seventy year old toddler. What the hell is going on there?

It's probably meth, isn't it?

Hey, I've got feelings you know! I made a few bad life choices but I'm slowly getting things back on track.

Are you trying to tell me that is not David Jason?

Not too Tattoo: he was better in The Man with the Golden Gun.

Quote from: Tony Tony Tony on January 01, 2022, 11:55:43 AMAm seriously considering getting my fist ever tattoo. Plan is a small discreet Bee in tribute to the City of my birth (Manchistor) somewhere easily covered.

Not your bell-end then?

I have no idea what bees have to do with Manchester. Just me?

I remember them being on Boddingtons' cans.

Tattoos are awesome and you should get one, if not many, like me. I started with a little Aboriginal flag on my wrist to rejoice in my heritage, now I'm so covered in ink that most of my future tatts will be wee gap-fillers. The good thing about a little bee tattoo is that it'll be nice and easy, so most experienced artists will give you a good result, but the question is, what style will it be in?  American Traditional would work, but with the bold linework in that style, you wouldn't want for it to be too small, or it'll eventually blur together as it ages.  Fine-line single needle style would look nice for a tiny one, but that's a relatively new style, no-one knows how well or poorly the super tiny, fine single needle stuff ages yet.  Black and grey style would show off some nice texture, if you can find a good b&g specialist.  They're relatively expensive, but not appallingly so if it's just a little thing.  Pick your style, research local artists who specialise in that style, and you'll be right.

Cheers for all the top advice folks. As it is a New Year the new me is going to be more spontaneous, brave and daring (within certain safely predefined parameters of course.... I'm not daft) so I have decided to go for it.

I am going to get yer Manc Bee on my upper arm at the end of the month using the money I save by having a dry January which gives me the impetus to kick the booze for a while (it's gone well so far, thanks for asking).

As per Samadriels sage advice above I am going to do plenty research aided by the fact that there are least three tattoo shops in walking distance of my place and countless more easily accessible in that London near where I work.

For those wondering why a bee has a particular Manchester connection it is meant to symbolise that the City was the cradle of the industrial revolution (take that Birmingham) and a hive of industry- Geddit?

I have chosen the upper arm area for two reasons. I understand that it barely stings/hurts being inked on a fleshy area. Also it is easier to cover up discretely even with a TShirt. This obviously doesn't apply should I step out in a singlet but then again I'm not likely to. I'm only getting a tat not turning into legend Gary.... Not yet.

samadriel

Oh yeah, upper outer arm is a cinch, pain-wise. You might want to get it up near the shoulder so a little tatt isn't taking up the centre of prime tattoo real estate (you never know, you might want more in future!)

Is it going to be a realistic bee

or a cartoon bee?

Milo

You could do one so it looks like your BCG scar has wings.

That's the first tattoo I'd like on me.  I do really like the idea of being covered completely in large highly realistic images of plants and insects.  Don't think I will though.

The second bee does look like the sort that would help an aged gent cross the road. The first looks so angry the only way it would help anyone cross the road is by stinging them in the arse.

In actual fact I will be going for the traditional manc bee as featured on the city council coat of arms and cans of Boddingtons beer. This is a bee so spaced out on spice that it really doesn't care if you cross the road or not.

I don't care for tattoos in general, but that one is a BEEauty. (beauty)

Buelligan

It is but I also applaud Tony's choice.  Also (as I said, I love bees) like Napoleon's bee - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Elba
