Title: Celebrity Death List 2021
Post by: oy vey on January 01, 2021, 02:05:51 AM
Predictions?

Obviously not Prince Philip but I'm thinking Clint Eastwood, Syd Little or multiple Rolling Stones members to really fuck with people.

Anyway, lists aside, here's one to kick off 2021, Mark Eden, who played dastardly Alan Bradley in Corrie. A proper soap villain, before that meant swivel eyed lunatic serial killer. His acting oozed menace.

Oh dear. Which movingly shows just how little he mattered any more in the scheme of things. There should have been a rash of huge, 'WELL NOW HE CAN FLY, WAY UP TO THE SKY, YES HE CAN (HE CAN!) HE CAN' headlines, but I didn't see many round my part of the World...

I still hold with all of the celebrity Keiths that are still alive.

Especially when you compare it to a contemporary show like DS9 which has lost just one main cast member and a few recurring ones. It's probably just a statistical quirk, but why did it have to be that show?

Gutted about Mira Furlan. Was watching this Babylon 5 panel today by pure coincidence, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0w2pK_uBpXQ Has Stephan Furst being lovely and interesting, Jerry Doyle being exactly as obnoxious as you'd expect, and some lovely stories about Andreas Katsulas and Richard Briggs. Jerry Doyle's story about Andreas Katsulas in particular is funny and ridiculous. Also funny with Mira Furlan still being upset for quite a cruel prank a few of the cast played on Jason Carter, 20 years after the fact.

Without wishing to derail this thread with B5 chat, I've just spotted the "Remastered" versions of the series is available on Amazon Prime, which is essentially the episodes presented as originally broadcast in the correct 4:3 ratio with a bit of digital clean-up. But still a massive improvement on the awful bodge-job DVD versions with the mismatched 16:9 shots and zoomed in/cropped CG sequences.

I dunno if you can call the 4:3 version the correct one. It was shot in widescreen and intended to be released in that one day. Of course the zoomed in bits of everything with a CGI element in it wasn't good either. Without derailing the thread further it seems an HD version of the 4:3 version exists already. I've no idea if that is where the Amazon Prime version comes from.

https://thewertzone.blogspot.com/2018/05/hd-version-of-babylon-5-may-be-possible.html

The original film exists so it's possible to rebuild each episode with new CGI just like they did with Star Trek: The Next Generation. But that will never happen as B5 had far more CGI shots and even the HD TNG wasn't profitable enough.

Nah, it was a show from an era when people only had square TVs, it was filmed with that format as a priority.

I'm aware it was shot on 16:9 cameras like most shows at the time, and that they did attempt to future proof for a potential widescreen release somewhere down the line, but this was scuppered because Warners wouldn't pay for the VFX team to have a special 16:9 reference monitor so they could render shots at the correct resolution.

Considering none of the visual effects were designed for a widescreen release I'm not sure you could say the 16:9 was in any way the "correct" version either, it was just a bit of an awkward compromise for the DVDs.

Possibly a snooker fan as his sons from his final marriage are called Chance and Cannon.

He left a previous marriage when the wife was pregnant. He didn't meet the child until 30 years later after the mother had died. That son was called Larry - very weird.

He had a fear of death - I think he mentioned it when he was on Norm Macdonald's show - and had arranged to have his body cryogenically frozen. One obit I saw said his family eventually got him to change his mind, a conversation I wouldn't have minded overhearing.

I vaguely remember some story about a tabloid rat journalist finding soiled adult diapers in his trashcan, but I'm not going to google that.

He despised Piers Morgan for taking over his show.

Bit disappointed that nobody on 'ere has mentioned the passing of Nicola Pagett. She carked it last week, only just found about it. Chris Barber (https://www.theguardian.com/film/2021/mar/09/sounds-of-the-kitchen-sink-trad-jazz-and-british-cinemas-new-wave), British jazzman who also had a big influence on early British pop, died last week. He's maybe best known for excellently-titled early 60s jazzsploitation teen movie It's Trad, Dad, and Lonnie Donegan played in his band in the 50s, and also links to British New Wave cinema, notably Tony Richardson.

I am definitely in that number having drawn a lengthy comic based on the Phantom Tollbooth when I was about 12. It's nice that Juster apparently shared a flat with PT illustrator Jules Feiffer as a young man, you can imagine the high jinks. Trying to figure out how I, a non-football fan, have heard of Worthington. Did he have some kind of cult status or indie music stardom or do a lot of drugs or something? Did David Gedge write a song about him or was he on a Smiths cover or something? Or was he more of a Loaded icon?

there was one really good goal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0z_arXZ8nM) from 1979 that's doing the rounds as taking more skill than 1979 had any right allowing. one of those ones that back then people just talked about forever as the rest of his career faded from memory.

kind of like how everyone in a precise age band knows about Toto Schillachi, but outside of seven games and one tournament, didn't seem to amount to much

He was one of a handful of apparently self-sabotaging working-class mavericks in the 1970s, brilliantly skilful on their day, but inconsistent. The fame and notoriety came from the tabloid press always looking for the next George Best (as phantom_power mentioned): good-looking, long-haired, little respect for authority, always in the betting shop or the pubs and clubs (see also Stan Bowles and Peter Marinello etc). He managed to fail two medicals for Liverpool when Shankly wanted to buy him, probably due to his partying, reportedly had a threesome with a Swedish mother and daughter, and called his autobiography One Hump or Two? In a Shoot magazine questionnaire under Former Clubs he wrote 'The Playboy and Tramps', and for Most Difficult Opponent, 'the taxman'.

Lineker says he was kind and helpful to him when he was a youngster at Leicester. He probably was worshipped in Loaded and the like years after his career was over, but I doubt he would have ever described himself as a legend.

I had a look but couldn't find anything relating Frank Worthington and indie music, unless he inspired Frank Sidebottom. I may have confused him with Robin Friday who was on the cover of the SFA's "The Man Don't Give a Fuck". But it definitely appears Worthington is a hero to many, for obvious reasons.

He was one of a handful of apparently self-sabotaging working-class mavericks in the 1970s, brilliantly skilful on their day, but inconsistent.
Worth countering to the self-sabotaging bit that Worthington was still playing top flight football well into his mid 30s, so presumably he kept himself in decent health - indeed, his last first division season saw him play regularly for Southampton as they finished second and he was still playing league standard till he was close to 40.

Although, that said, I gather Lawrie McMenemy sacked him after finding him in his team hotel room with two young ladies and Ron Atkinson claims he turned down a move to Man United in 1982 in favour of going to relegation-bound Leeds.

She's struggled with anorexia since she was a child, it was brought up during her time on Big Brother, and she'd seemingly struggled with it off and on in the years since. But a couple of months ago her family posted a GoFundMe to try and raise funds to get her specialised treatment... the photo came up on my Twitter timeline and the images of her were scary. Obviously it was too late and things only for worse since.

Very sad news.

Yes, it's a shame that so many great British actors are described as "Harry Potter actor" in biographies and obituaries just because they've all been in at least one of the numerous Harry Potter films. Exactly. chveik was presumably (as in I'm 100% certain) commenting on that crass phenomenon. If you're a British thesp who once appeared in a Harry Potter film, you will, in the first paragraph of most obituaries, be described as a Harry Potter actor.

Eric SYkes, Leslie Phillips, Robert Hardy, Peter Mullan, Julie Christie (thats right, in Prisoner of Azkaban as landlady, apparently she was supposed to have a recurring role but that didn't happen), Ralph Ineson (who only did his role because in the novel, he spits on Maggie Smith, but they didn't even get to film that)
Not just British - Gregorovitch (IIRC), an incredibly minor character could have been any renta-Slavic character actor in Equity, but instead they got  Yugoslavian superstar, late 90s/early 00s Hollywood's favourite Eastern Bloc baddie and Boris the Blade himself, Rade Serbedzija

I was never arsed about the Meat Loaf stuff, but Steinman did write a brilliantly over-the-top number for the end of 'Streets of Fire' called 'Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young'. The film itself isn't much cop (notable for early sighting of Willem Defore, looking a bit camp in a strange leather get up, if not much else) but that song is great in it's sheer "throw the kitchen sink in too" approach.

Streets of Fire is a classic. Bizarre production stories: they built a massive multi-million-dollar replica Chicago set in California including a version of the El (elevated railway), with a massive tarpaulin to block out the sun so they could film the night scenes (obviously filming in Chicago at night would be ridiculous, or any place where it's not so fucking sunny). Great songs though. Nowhere Fast is good too, as well as far too appropriate. Plus Willem Defoe in leather dungarees with a big hammer. Rick Moranis at his best (not in leather dungarees).

And Steinman's other classic: Total Eclipse Of The Heart, a song that's brought more amusement to the world than any other.

I think my main problem with it is that the male lead was clearly picked based on his looks rather than talent. To his credit, he managed to get this and a couple other lead roles (Eddie and the Cruisers, the Philadelphia Experiment) before his lack of acting chops were rumbled.

Though I did see it when I was about 18, and Diane Lane made me feel a bit wobbly, so that was a bonus. Her miming of the aforementioned Steinman song probably helped.

He was a prick.
1975 :
The Scottish pop singer, just 20 at the time, was facing charges after he had knocked down and killed an elderly neighbour of his - 70-year-old pedestrian Euphemia Clunie - whilst driving his turbo-charged Ford Mustang 351 around the streets of Edinburgh.

Despite some witnesses claiming McKeown was driving too fast, a court cleared him of the more serious charge and instead found him of guilty of reckless driving. He was fined £100 and banned from driving for a year.

2004 :
Bay City Rollers lead singer Les McKeown today admitted crashing his car while twice the legal alcohol limit and fleeing the scene of the accident.

When stopped by police, McKeown, 49, said he had not been driving the car, Thames Magistrates' Court heard. The Seventies pop star crashed his Volvo into a Honda Civic last July. He and a female passenger walked away but were pursued by a witness who told him to wait for the police.

McKeown, of Lower Clapton, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol, failing to stop at the scene of the incident, and driving without insurance.

"70s/80s British ad fauxmerica" a def aesthetic though some UK-shot films of that era have it (Little Shop of Horrors, the diner in Superman 2)

boooo. Would've been a great quote if it were true. I did figure that it makes sense that he got a tummy-ache, because on the next page he eats through a leaf that has five holes in it, and this page would necessitate something getting eaten by virtue of the presence of the holes, so it seems like eating a reasonable amount of healthy food makes narrative sense.

Rancid MIDI?? Bit harsh! She's got the bottom 'board on a decent enough 80's electric piano sound to bless the track with some quite tasteful, almost Steely Dan-esque shapes, whilst the Yamaha DX7 (pro industry standard for the time, that) on top is set to what I'd call an extremely tasteful analogue-filtery lead sound for the solos.

I reckon Bungle's handling bass duties, possibly on a steinberger headless with a weird knob.

Edward De Deado - inventor of term Lateral Thinking dies at 88.

QuoteThe thinker and writer Edward de Bono, who has died aged 88, once suggested that the Arab-Israeli conflict might be solved with Marmite. During a 1999 lecture to Foreign Office officials, the originator of the term lateral thinking argued that the yeast extract, though proverbially socially divisive, could do what politicians and diplomats had failed for years to achieve. The problem, as he saw it, was that people in the Middle East eat unleavened bread and so lack zinc, which makes them irritable and belligerent. Feeding them Marmite, therefore, would help create peace.

Perhaps not all it was cracked up to be.

The new issue of Sight and Sound has a tribute to Norman Lloyd (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Lloyd) who died last month aged 106. In the 1930s he worked as a stage actor for Elia Kazan and Joseph Losey, then with Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre. He also played a villain in Hitchcock's Saboteur before working mainly as a TV director, including on Alfred Hitchcock Presents. He later acted in St Elsewhere and as the headmaster in Dead Poets Society. And was apparently fit and healthy into his second century. 1914-2021!

Tom O'Gonner

QuoteComedian Tom O'Connor died in hospital on Sunday aged 81, his family has said.

He had had Parkinson's for about 14 years said his daughter-in-law, the former athlete Denise Lewis.

Actually got to see his act about seven years ago. It wasn't aimed at my age group, but he was proper old school professional and quite funny (down to Earth I wouldn't know about though).

At the time I thought he looked a little bit older than his years, but he was seven years past his Parkinson's diagnosis I suppose. Didn't stop him making a sharp exit at the end to reception to man a table selling his books (not that is at all unusual for comedians, of course. I remember Stewart Lee doing the same).

Australian actor Dieter Brummer has died, he was best known for Home and Away but was also in Underbelly (and great in it too) and a couple of episodes of Review With Myles Barlow that he was very funny in. Seems to have been suicide given the bit at the end of the piece, which makes it all the sadder. https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2021/jul/26/dieter-brummer-home-and-away-star-found-dead-at-45

That's really sad, I remember him well, a very familiar name and face from my teenage years. I didn't know he'd been up to much since H+A, especially not Review With Myles Barlow, been checking out Forrest MacNeil's remake lately and loving it so fair play to him. This is properly bleak.

MSN seem to have started deliberately presenting celebrity death news stories from the past as if they have just happened.
Last week stories about Dame Diana Rigg and Kelly Preston came up (both died in 2020) and yesterday there was one about Gene Wilder (2016). All were in the Daily Express originally.
Not death-related but today there was a story from Hello! about David Tennant leaving Doctor Who.
No dates anywhere. Nothing anywhere to indicate that these are old stories.
I presume this is a deliberate dishonest tactic to attract clickbait?
Title: Re: Celebrity Death List 2021
Post by: MojoJojo on July 27, 2021, 07:36:39 AM
It may not be deliberate - it's a known issue with the way recommendation algorithms work. Basically the algorithms will recommend anything that generates clicks.

https://www.cjr.org/the_experiment/the_second_death_of_tony_hart.php

... But most platforms have put in fixes so old stories don't get bumped.

I never knew he had that - I remember when he left, Corey Taylor kind of implied that he was kicked out because of a drug problem or something like that. If he had to quit because of his disease and he (CT) insinuated that in the press then he's a bigger cunt than I thought.

Due to increasingly acute Alzheimers. Apparently the last year or so he was often unsure of where he was, but the singing and concerts helped him. With the pandemic lockdown that's been taken away and it sounds like he's declined markedly.

I just read that as Sean Hughes and thought "Didn't he die a few years back?". This is sad news, I knew he had skin cancer when he was much younger so maybe it came back, but him being gone 58 is still a shock.

About 12 years ago I was cycling in Dockhead, London when I stopped to let a man and his small child cross the road. As the man smiled and waved and mouthed "Thanks!" I realised it was Sean Lock. Not much of a story but from that milisecond I shall conclude he was a great bunch of lads. Rest in peace Sean.

It's one of the great regrets of my life that I never saw them live. My mum offered to buy me tickets for them when my tortoise died but for some strange reason (probably to do with thinking it would be uncool to see a concert with my mum - I was 12 after all. Practically an adult)  I turned her down. I didn't even know if she wanted to go with me. I'm sure she'd have let me go with a mate if I'd asked..

"The Blitz" refers to The Sweet's 1941 smash-hit "Ballroom Blitz," which had spend 3 years at #1. It was only the lack of vinyl (which had been prioritized for war-use) that ended The Sweet's dominance and ubiquity (and gave music-hall crap, like Vera Lynn and Tommy Steele, their chance.)

Same age as me, hearing she was dying of cancer shook me a bit it has to be said.  I know people die of it of all ages but there's something about the exact same age that packs more of a punch for some reason.  (Now have a scar where I worried myself silly over a mole and had it removed, but still glad that cases like this spooked me into getting checked out)

Way too early to go.  RIP

Quite like a bit of Girls Aloud. RIP Sarah:

They are quite popular around here, not in a "so bad they are good way" but genuinely made really good pop music you'd have to be a bit of a snob to dislike.

The Promise and biology for example, how could you not like those tunes? Bangers.

Very sad this news indeed.

Now I have to start by stating I am old and a musical snob so:

I dislike those songs. I also dislike referring to songs as tunes unless they are instrumental. I also dislike the use of the word banger to describe a good song. I always hear Simon Price's voice when I read tunes and banger.

Any person dying at the age of 39 is indeed very sad, not just for their pain, fears and sense of loss but for their families too. Really sad.

Very similar feelings here.  Resented the dirge on culture these manufactured money making bands wreaked on my younger life but I accepted they made some people happy.  That being said GA and Sarah Harding seemed pretty decent enough folk and utterly shit for her to die of this shitty disease at such a young age.

The giant musical arranger and saxophonist, Mr. Alfred "Pee Wee" Ellis. He was part of James Brown's band in the 60s. I saw a great interview with him where he said, "James came in and told me he had an idea for a song, and then went, "Uh, pah, puh, da, bah, ba, pah, puh." Colin "colon" Powell has died.

He threw in the Towell due to Covid complications despite being vaxxed. So looking forward to the antivaxxers to use him as a poster boy. Yeah can't wait

He already was their poster child. A nonthreatening, compliant, complicit black man they could hold up and say, "Look, we're not racist, see? We love General Powell! We think he should have been President! Only not really, we wouldn't have voted for him, there are limits."

Former Blue Peter presenter Christopher Wenner died last week.
Lasted only a couple of years on the show, and probably best remembered for feeding Simon Groom the infamous "what a beautiful pair of knockers" line.

Changed his name to Max Stahl and became an award-winning war reporter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Wenner
