I hear you're a racist now, Gavin Williamson

When you've seen one black sportsman you've seen them all.
QuoteGavin Williamson has been branded the most ignorant and incapable education secretary in the UK's history after he appeared to confuse Marcus Rashford with the England rugby player Maro Itoje, who is also black.
Williamson said in a short statement that he made a "genuine mistake" and "conflated the issues" of laptops and school meal campaigns that had both come up during the interview, adding that he had "huge respect" for Rashford and Itoje's "effective and inspiring campaigns".

Shit Good Nose

All tories do look the same though, sooooooo.......

Mind you, having absolutely no knowledge of or interest in sport I must admit I'd be very hard pressed to tell the difference between any sport people.  Literally the only reason I know of Rashford is from the school meals stuff and little Nose's school did a big thing about it.  If it weren't for that, I could be stood right next to him in a shop and wouldn't have a fucking clue who he is.  Never heard of this rugby bloke until now.

Without wanting to defend Williamson (and this really is more of a general thing), it does annoy me massively when people are put out if you don't know who a certain celebrity or sport person is.  My manager is a huge football fan and Tootinghams Hotspike is his favourite team, and he always gets a mild grump about the fact I don't give a single shit how a particular football team is doing and I only know of that one with the chin through listening to Athletico Mince (which, I daresay, isn't a very accurate representation of him).

Bah.

Yeah, but if you'd (presumably) been introduced to a different black sportsball player in the course of your work, you wouldn't subsequently assume it was Marcus Rashford?

And this is who Ken wants back in the Labour Party.

I can't answer that question honestly cos it's never happened to me.  I know SO little about sport (and literally actively avoid it) that I couldn't say with conviction I wouldn't do that.  BUT the exact same thing could - and probably would - happen if we were talking about two white sportsball people, even if they looked completely different.

"Oh, I met Bongledon mid striker Kevin Mckekikkin to talk about pork futures the other day."
"Actually, sir, you met with Norris Woows of Wolvinghampton Wanderers.  Kevin Mckekikkin was about more access to porn for school children." etc.

I don't think I can adequately put across how little I know and care about sport and everyone involved with it.

He isn't just a sports person. He has forced the government into 2 u-turns regarding feeding kids. He has been on TV, in the papers and everywhere for the last 18 months. If the fucking secretary of state for education doesn't know what he looks like he should be buried in a pit of his own incompetence

Butchers Blind

In all fairness, I used to confuse Dale Winton with David Dickinson.

idunnosomename

He is an incompetent cruel cunt but this seems like a genuine mistake mixing up personal brief meetings over Zoom with two young sportsmen who do look quite similar (by that garun comp - shape of nose and everything - they look more similar than his shitty racist Spitting Image puppet). It's not like he brought it up, it's careless but whatever.

The nothing context makes Campbell trailing through photos of himself to find himself with dark-skinned men he can hilariously mis-identify as Rashford even more bizarrely arrogant and offensive

Does anyone have suggestions how I could stop confusing Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon?
Would need to google to see which one was in Bourne films or Martian or whatever.
I don't have any trouble remembering which one was famous rapper Matty Matt.

There was a round on University Challenge last week where they had to identify female football players (I think they were all British). They got the first one right and there was a flurry of that applause-accompanied-by-murmurs-of-surprise they get when the audience is genuinely impressed. They didn't get any of the others though.

Is "garun" another word for "racist?"

That's IrishCatholicBostonianist!!

Seriously though I get Mark Wahlberg and his brother mixed up. I know one was in New Kids On The Block and then that one's younger brother became a rapper, and now one of them is Mark Wahlberg the famous actor but it took me ages to work out which one was which.

idunnosomename

ok i looked him up and he literally looks nothing like him. the comp in the guardian had in that rugby head getup that obscured most of his head. most notably his chin

I often confuse Robert Wuhl with David Keith.

El Unicornio, mang

They don't look anything alike, although it is apparently a fact that our facial recognition capabilities are based around who we grew up with, which makes differentiating between people of races we haven't been exposed to regularly more difficult. Which is why apparently a lot of people in Japan think all middle aged bald white men look like Bruce Willis (get yourselves over there lads). Even in America I met people who thought all British people looked the same. Although Rashford and Rugby guy have completely different builds as well.

I have a friend who has Prosopagnosia (face blindness) so everyone looks like this to him

idunnosomename

guy on the right you can tell apart because of his butt-chin

I find it hard to imagine anyone wouldn't be able to recognise Marcus Rashford at this stage, especially in politics

Think it's possible Williamson was thick enough to think a sports person talking about starving kids must be Marcus Rashford and think it's plenty possibly Itoje had a Zoom setup that was sufficiently bad that it wasn't immediately apparent. I mean, regardless of skin colour if there's a bright light behind someone a macbook webcam can make them look like a silhouette.

I've got a very mild case of that, which can probably better be described as I'm just crap at remembering faces. Once I've known someone a while or at least seen them several times I'm usually ok, but then if they change their hair, take their glasses off, wear something radically different etc. I've got no chance so it wasn't really their face I was using to remember them. It doesn't help that my visual imagination is quite poor too so when I'm trying to memorise or picture someone's face it can be completely wrong, so when I actually see them they look nothing like the face in my head.

In fairness, the G did try and find two photos where they look about as similar as possible - same facial expression, and the rugby guy's skull shape and the top of their head and their hair obscured by a helmet and strap, lighting giving them a similar skin colour. Even their clothes are as similar as possible. They even look about the same size as each-other despite the Rugby guy being much wider than Marcus Rashford. Must've taken the photo team a while. Very strange use of time and effort by The Guardian.

Other newspapers didn't play such obvious funny-buggers, for instance here's Sky, where they're both looking at Williamson like 'wtf mate'

Hang in there Gav, we've all had egg on our faces at one time or another. Recently I'd changed my name to Mowroo in anticipation of cat week, I had the name sown onto my chest and printed out business cards and I turn up on the day and the guy says I'd pre-registered at the culmination of the last cat week under the name Beep. Mowroo on my chest, I'd been walking around on tiptoe, speaking in a baritone and burying my scat for months, not leaving it out like normal, to reflect Mowroo's august nature and I get there and I'm Beep. You have to be willing to laugh at yourself and it'll all blow over. Get well soon.

what was the confusing thing about Lukaku and Stormzy a year or two ago?

whatever it was it was also racist despite both Lukaku and Stormzy being the same person iirc

For the bathroom pep talk scene in Boogie Nights, Matt Damon actually played Mark Wahlberg's reflection.
