The tv series of the much loved film seems to be quite divisive and I wasn't a huge fan of the first season, but then really enjoyed the second and thought it was a big improvement. And now it's back for a third, following straight on from the events of the season 2 finale and they've locked up Guillermo and can't quite decide his fate, it was packed full of strong gags, Matt Berry's really settled in to the role now and feels a lot less actorly, the doll version of Nadja is adorable, the four way hypnotism bit was very silly but very funny, and well, I liked pretty much everything about it really.

Thought the second season was much stronger than the first, think I might do a rewatch before diving in to this.

Oddly I didn't like the first appearance of the hat, that nightclub episode from the first season is the show at it's weakest for me, but then I loved the second episode it was in and any mention always gets a smile from me now.

Cool, hopefully up on iPlayer soon

There's no news on that front just yet, but I'd be surprised if it isn't unless Sky are still doing that annoying thing of buying up anything that's successful so that only 17 people can then watch it.

Jack Shaftoe

Spoilers because I'm a bit negative, which might be a downer.

Spoiler alert
Jermaine Clement has stepped back on production duties on this series and possibly I'm projecting, but it does like it's drifted a bit. Loved the second series, but this doesn't feel like this has the imagination or the drive so far, although it's only two eps in, so a bit early to judge.

QuoteA spin-off to Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi's film of the same name, What We Do in the Shadows' upcoming series will find a home on BBC Two in the UK and while an official airdate has not yet been confirmed, there's a lot to look forward to judging by star Harvey Guillén's recent comments.

Wasn't the last series on the Fox channel here before it found its way to the BBC?

I sort of see where you're coming from, at least when it came to the third episode and I didn't really gel with the plotline about Nandor dating Gail at all and even found it a little irritating at times, while Colin Robertson and Lazlo's antics only raised the occasional smile. But then I thought the fourth was a real return to form and their casino antics, and Guillermo's dash around the world was superb stuff.

Think very regularly of the way Nandoor delightedly exclaims

MILFS!!

in season 2

It's Colin ROBINSON (apparently, né Rubinstein). But it's an easy mistake, as they almost never say his surname in the show.

This is on the iPlayer or the high seas now.

We finished them the other evening and loved it.

It'll be interesting to see what they do next if they do have series 4
Spoiler alert
as Nandor solo, Nadja and Guillermo and then Laszlo and the baby Colin Robinson.

The song playing over the end credits of the last episode sent me fucking mad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyE8xhvseLw I spent ages replaying it until my wife started singing "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" over the top of it and I could finally rest.

Listening to it today it's just clicked that it's "Lemon Incest" by Serge Gainsbourg!

Ha, only just seen this, but it is possible you may be on to something though naturally I refuse to confirm or deny it.

I'm continuing to have mixed feelings about this, I really didn't get on with the fifth episode and stopped watching it for a bit, but after SteveDave's post above thought I'd give the sixth a go and really enjoyed it, so, um, that's nice.

4th season was commissioned before season 3 started so it's going to be interesting to see where they go, they set up a few nice threads at the end.

The melody of the song is from Chopin. Gainsbourg based a lot of his music on existing classical works, particularly Chopin.

Someone pointed this out to me on Facebook. Also this by Dvorak

Great season, disappointed as ever that I lacked the restraint to avoid binging it in a day. Some nice touches with the characters, especially
Spoiler alert
the developing affection Lazlo has for Colin Robinson, leading to that really lovely ending.

I watched the last of these last night. Quite a bold ending. I wonder
Spoiler alert
how soon it will return to some approximation of the status quo. It's not a bad idea to mix things up, but they surely wouldn't split the ensemble up for long.

I'm not sure I really bought Laszlo's heartfelt words about wanting to protect Nadja. She was a vampire first.

It's a measure of how good this series is that it even managed to make "Bazinga!" funny.

Donal Logue's appearance was particularly fun, since I watched Blade at the cinema a couple of weeks ago. I assume it's just a coincidence and not some odd bit of cross promotion.

One minor nitpick: If revealing the vampire world to humans is a capital offence, why are our lot making a documentary with a human crew?

I do like that, but I was a bit distracted by how much swearing there seemed to be this series. Has there been some recent change to the rules in American telly?

I think the joke is that if someone has played a vampire in a film then they are a vampire in real life too. I think it was the 1st season where they had scene where they had a few people who had played vamps in film/tv as part of the vampire council.

Yep -

• Tilda Swinton (Only Lovers Left Alive)
• Danny Trejo (From Dusk Till Dawn)
• Paul Reubens (the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie)
• Evan Rachel Wood (True Blood)
• Wesley Snipes (the Blade movies), via Skype
• Clement, Waititi, and Jonny Brugh (the What We Do in the Shadows movie)

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

I meant that the timing was funny, what with Blade being rereleased around the same time as the episodes were broadcast.

I wonder what the chances are of them getting Gary Oldman in on the joke.

QuoteAs for the vampires that declined to attend, Kiefer Sutherland, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise were also mentioned. Clement and Waititi say that Sutherland was approached, but he ended up passing. Pitt was actually into the idea, but the scene was getting full and they "never really followed up." They admit that was perhaps rude of them, but that it's also saved a potential appearance for the next season.

Perhaps he believes that if the vampire who turns you is killed then you also die as mentioned in the Sire episode?

It's a cable show, and cable shows are not subject to the same restrictions network TV has. That said, commercial cable, and FX in particular, has definitely loosened up its strictures in terms of language and content the last few years. There's increased amounts of swearing and even nudity all over FX shows like this, Dave, Atlanta, It's Always Sunny..., etc.
