Ever found something that reminded you of Look Around You (especially s2) but was real...
Not just the usual education shows.

Found this 1976 ITV/Thames Today discussion on the paranormal.
Featuring
a wrestling obsessed woman named Pandora who is the descendant of Theseus and Casanova
A bloke who wants to build a manmade island to celebrate the year 2000
A town cried named Lord Shepherd who thinks he is superior to the peerage.
The sinister broken-legged aristo who is preparing for future war and thinks he was reincarnated from a succession of Jews.
The Howard and Hilda Hughes-esque male and female beefeaters, one of whom is Hansford Miller of the English Nationalist Party, who believes a tunnel should be built under the Thames

Astonishing.

jamiefairlie

Bad Ambassador

Brunel built a tunnel under the Thames in Victorian times, tell that guy to go fuck himself.

As an aside, I just looked this guy up and found an amusing titbit on Wikipedia.

QuoteHansford-Miller never had children, and attracted attention in 2001 by campaigning to be cloned, complaining that, while "reproductive technology" for women was available, there was no help available for him to reproduce.

Sounds like something from one of the American segments of The Day Today!

The woman at 4:45 is pleasingly hatstand.

So any 1970s/80s demonstration of something technical with a serious voiceover is LAY now?

It's the cats that make it.

RE:the 60s one, that's probably even weirder because of her feeble attempt to look like a bloke (she had started hormones, but was still going by her deadname) that it makes her look like a French and Saunders character.

I know it might be easy pickings with a whole room of eccentrics to choose from, but I'm astonished at how much the World Association For Celebrating The Year 2000 sounds like a Robert Popper/Robin Cooper bit. All it needs is a giant concrete statue of Parmaynu the Ping Pong Bat at one of the trade fairs

George White

Also, the STeve Haynes the unconvincing moustachioed purple and green punk  'of the younger generation' has a bit of Cooper about him.

It did get a UK showing in 1979 - complete with Radio Times feature.

turnstyle

26:20, lad in the corner does a cheeky cross eyes for the camera. Lovely stuff.

Sonny_Jim

Used to listen to this guy whilst falling asleep, something about the subject matter, noise of the vacuum pump and his general tone was like prozac to me:

Reminded of Richard Feynman's Fun to Imagine - like a scientifically minded Yank Cyril Fletcher. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1ww1IXRfTA

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2005/jan/29/tvandradio.guide1 This article shines some light.
The 'new vegetable - celeriac' possibly inspired the Newsnight special trail on 'turkey - the new bird that has the British chicken industry running scared', while Pop Gospel's taped audience possibly inspired Pealy's orchestral lead-in segment to Synthesiser Patel.

Sonny_Jim

I hear Jeremy Paxman is working towards the 10 pence turkey.

The Stately Ghosts of England - Margaret Rutherford and Stringer Davies and spiritualist Tom Corbett go to Longleat and Beaulieu to find ghosts and talk to  kooky old aristos.
Ever wanted to see Rutherford talk about the Marquess of Bath (before the wifelets and so on).  Almost like a Viz strip.

Vilma 'sister of Wayne from Pipkins' Laryea here is very Pealy Maghti. https://youtu.be/6mdSjDz1G7I

George White

https://letterboxd.com/film/taking-tiger-mountain/ This comes to mind. A dystopian, partly pornographic satire shot in Llanelli by a bunch of visiting American youths including Bill Paxton.

George White

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIIo4_-jxY4 This 1976 Horizon film has the kind of feel the Gonnis segment got down pat. 16mm fauxmericana - and it has Christopher Guest too. (And James Woods, and Sam Wanamaker, and Shane Rimmer).

George White

From Nationwide, 1974.

To quote Catherine Sloan on twitter, '
This raises so many questions 🤣. I mean how did he decide this was his thing? And make the little holder thing? And who saw him do this? How did it get on TV? How did they decide the eggs counted as jumped on? What's with his clothes?!'

Gob Shine Algorithm

As a schoolkid in the eighties, I regularly used to scowl like the sullen kid opening his textbook in the opening credits?

George White

CW Jane Arden and Jack Bond's Anti-Clock, which is utter gash but feels so much like Look Around You (even has actual legendary physicist Richard Feynman in an acting role!), that if you slotted in the Scary Picture, it would fit in perfectly.

Shared elsewhere but This clip from the 1982 BBC Lassa fever docudrama Month of the Doctors https://youtu.be/X6EnBgK8EwM?t=81  This clip may be one of the funniest things I've seen this week - Shane Rimmer's line 'could turn New York into a bad disaster movie', and various signs of 'New York' - 'big American car, folk singing hippies, frisbees, 'police' sign, a yellow taxi, then a random cut to stock footage of a train...
Shows how Popper and Serafinowicz captured that science show/docudrama rhythm for the filmed bits - i.e. the 'special report' on gonnis.
