Like the book within a book within a book etc.

I enjoyed this, although as TIWS says, it gets a bit messy,

Stigdu

That was the most complicated episode for me out of all of them. I didn't understand the final 5 minutes. Otherwise I enjoyed it.

BritishHobo

Loved that. Inside No. 9 at its best, when it nails the little nuances of domestic dramas, before mixing in the weirdness.

MigraineBoy

A minor thing but the TIME magazine cover of the scientists was of the shittest, sub-Photoshop quality. It looked like one of those borders you can add to Facebook photos.

Poobum

Was such a lovely story
Spoiler alert
the twist at the end just feels tacked on cause that's the show's USP. Honestly didn't get the implication of the dead bird until now, but still, the tedium of time travel paradoxes hold no drama for me and can fuck right the fuck off. Ohhhh what would happen if you went back in time and killed your grandad? Ohhhh. You create a parallel timeline whilst the original carries on, who cares?

I thought that was rubbish, definitely one of my least favourite episodes they've done. The bit with Reece's character at the end redeemed it a little bit, but I was not into all that cheesy soap opera stuff that made up most of the episode.

Ah well, I always expect a clunker every series. Enjoyed the first four episodes a lot, so no big deal.

The older Zach was definitely the most irritating character of the series so far, if not just for his habit of highlighting every double letter of every word.

Double R double T

In all seriousness it made sense that when his mum died his mental health took a turn as well as maybe developing her trait for trying to organise and make sense out of things. I wish they'd made something else out of that. They can handle these kind of things  well- sensitively portrayed dyslexia in Merrily Merrily and deafness in Empty Orchestra, as well as a great parody of badly written characters on the autism spectrum which for me was one of the best parts of Nine Lives Kat- but this felt too on the nose. I suppose with half an hour there's only so much you can do but if it was integrated better, maybe more related to science as that was one of the things that united older and younger Zach, it would have elevated the episode.
The phone message from the different timeline spoilt the ending for me. Seen it in other stuff and it feels like a massive copout.

Didn't think of it in that context, fair enough.

And they missed one at the start, just after he's come into the house and he's lifting up the box with the bird in he says "Shall I, er?. .." but doesn't say double LL.

Jasha

Best of the current series so far. I always thought boobs and legs were the only thing you could spell upside down on a calculator.

On the podcast they said initially his double letter habit was going to be a trait shared with Reece's character, to signify they'd worked so closely they'd picked up a shared habit.

Also, when the Mum takes him on as a tutor she said "it'll be nice to have two geniuses in the house." To which his reply was going to be; "Genii. Double i."
Which would've been a nice nod when you realised it was two "I".

jobotic

Don't watch this programme while you are also having a conversation and looking at your phone.

I didn't have a clue what was going on but that's on me, not them.

?/10 will watch again

idunnosomename

i thought this one was by far the best of this series. really good performances. yeah maybe the future bit was a bit odd and if they'd refurbished the kitchen would they keep the sink in the same place? it's a comedy, that's fine. but felt a bit teary at some bits, felt it came together well

ishantbekeepingit

Having rewatched the episode,
Spoiler alert
was Zach ever planning on going back in the "good" timeline?  Was he going to fake all the Bob stuff and then shoot himself?  If not, and that last scene of no-one coming to pick up the sparrow was just showing the origin of the Bob-Zach timeline, why was that fight scene juxtaposed with it as if it were affecting things?
[close]
Lots of doubles in the episode, presumably because of the "equal and opposite reaction" bit of Newton's 3rd Law:
Spoiler alert
  • the two timelines, most obviously, in reaction to each other
  • "Bob" grounding himself with doubles like Helen grounds herself with her clicks
  • In the final scene, Reese was wearing the same ratty trainers that "Bob" was wearing when he picks up the sparrow

I did like that even with all the

fancy rayguns and drop-in coffee pods, 2062 still has three-pin plugs and 2020s-model Samsung phones.

I think the fight *would* result in Zach/Bob not going back (and that timeline is the one we see at the end.) The Radio Times offered quite a useful summary of the plot - https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/comedy/inside-no-9-random-act-kindness-ending/

Good to know that's how the world goes in the future, they are the best design.

Quote from: Noodle Lizard on May 24, 2022, 10:18:36 PMI think the higher concept episodes tend to suffer the most from the limited runtime, but I appreciate the ambition nevertheless.

I think 'high concept' doesn't mean what you think it does. A high concept film is one with a plot so simple you can explain it in a single sentence. The expression was coined by Don Simpson, a Hollywood producer in the 80's who specialised in such films. So Transformers (giant fighting robots!) and Under Siege (Die Hard on a boat!) would be high concept; the idea is they're easy to pitch.

It is a misleading term because a lot of people take it to mean something that is complicated or takes a lot of unravelling, when really it's the opposite. Bizarrely, something which is character driven or difficult to explain is low concept, which doesn't make sense. But hey, take it up with Don Simpson (except you can't because he's dead).

Red Macadam

When I first saw Zach I thought he really looked like a young Reece Sheersmith, and expected that was going to be part of the plot. Completely thrown when it was revealed Steve Pemberton was the adult Zach. Does anyone else think that was deliberate? Actually, does anyone else think he looks like Reece, or am I seeing things that aren't there?

I really liked the set for the demonstration with the two cars, like a futuristic Open University show.

DrGreggles

Hmm... Up to date on these now and not really feeling this series at all.
Maybe they've just set themselves an impossibly high bar with the earlier series and this one (and probably the previous one) have suffered by comparison.

Spoiler alert
Sorry Reece

Angst in my Pants

I don't understand how the fight would change anything, isn't it too late by that point? Future Zach's new timeline doesn't require him to go back in time again, does it?

I think they've been fine but nothing has really leapt out post-pandemic really (again, understandable and doesn't mean it can't be great again).

Maybe it would help to take a break, do something else and then come back?

somersetchris

Just listening to the podcast and they started off by saying 'this was an idea that we've had knocking around for ages that we decided to come back to' which they've said several times about this series' episodes.

Oh I suppose he still has to invent the time machine in his 'new' timeline (without Rudolph) otherwise that timeline wouldn't have been possible. 'New' Rudolph prevents this through some consequence of their fight, and so the original timeline is reverted without any time travel. Original young Zach remains oblivious of his Mum's diagnosis and she dies.

Have I got that right?
