Well it's an account pretending to be an Athletic journalist documenting the fanzone in Paris and photoshopping banners and stuff so not about the Royal Family.

I'm not leaving it to chance. Bunting out the arse for 96 hours straight. I've been loading myself up for weeks.

Gawd bless ya quen.

The LGA estimates 16,000 street parties will take place over the Jubilee.

The BBC interviewed three people planning street parties:

QuoteSelf-described royal fan Becky Norman says she has mounds of bunting in preparation for the street party she has organised for Friday in Hull.

Kilnsea Grove will be closed and taken over by child entertainers, food and even a special singing performance by Becky herself.

The charity worker, who has been planning the party since the beginning of the year, says: "All the decorations are going up this weekend.

"I've even got a massive cardboard cut-out of the Queen.

"For me personally the whole country should be backing her - she's never stood down and she's never not been there."

So Becky's reason she wants the whole country to "back the Queen" is "she's always been the Queen"

Another street party is taking place in Derry:

QuoteThe community worker spent months organising the bash on the Fountain Estate for residents who can expect afternoon tea, a disco and their very own regal guest.

"We actually have a queen for a day competition - where somebody will come round and pick out an older woman and she will go in a fancy car around the city," Jeanette says..

"I cant even put into words the respect we have for the Queen.

"She's a mother at the end of the day - she's raised a family and we all know what goes with that.

"She's just the most wonderful lady."

I mean, millions of people are mothers but that doesn't mean we have street parties for them.

QuoteJudy Cera is organising a Jubilee street party in Gloucester, even though she does not fit the royal-loving stereotype.

"I think the monarchy is a bit outdated and I don't really see the point of them really," she says.

Judy is using the opportunity to meet her neighbours. She has knocked on doors of 60 houses in Hopewell Street in Barton and Tredworth.

"There's people from loads of different countries - so it would be nice to get together, and maybe people [will] bring food from their country."

But before the party on 5 June, Judy needs to get to grips with the decorations.

"I'm not sure how to put up bunting really," she adds.

Not sure why Judy is so keen to meet her neighbours but if she thinks the monarchy is outdated I'm sure there are other community events she could organise, perhaps a summer fete.

QuoteThe government will launch a review on when and where imperial measurements can be used, to coincide with the Queen's Jubilee weekend.

At the moment, traders must use metric measurements when selling packaged or loose goods - but they can use imperial measurements alongside them.

The review, which had already been signalled, will begin on Friday.

Labour MP Angela Eagle said it was a "pathetic" attempt to "weaponise nostalgia".

Most the people I know who struggled with the move to metric (practically or emotionally) are dead. Who the hell is this for?

Fambo Number Mive

It angers me that the government said we needed to move on from partygate so they could concentrate on the cost of living crisis, but they can multitask when it suits them with nonsense like confusing everyone with imperial measurements.

If some shops do use imperial only measurements it'll just confuse most people. Dont only three other countries in the world use imperial measurements?

Surely the whole point of a hereditary monarchy is that this will never, ever happen.

Bit cruel that wording when shes beset with mobility problems. And dead.

Abolish Maureen Lipman

Kankurette

I didn't give my mum a street party, I'm sure as hell not giving Liz one. Actually, one of the dumbest comment was 'ahh so will Republicans be taking bank holidays off then ahhh'. With various responses pointing out that they were self-employed and didn't do bank holidays, or that their workplaces would be closed over the bank holidays so they couldn't exactly go into work even if they wanted to, or that they'd be working over the bank holidays anyway. Monarchists are so stupid sometimes.

Maureen Lipman is richer than I'll ever be, she can fuck off calling me a champagne socialist.

Fambo Number Mive

So Maureen Lipman says we can only call for the abolition of the monarchy if we've tried being a monarch?

idunnosomename

I couldn't bring myself to read it all but the point that if you didnt have the queen youd just have a tyrant like Putin, Xi or Macron seems a bit stupid when we have that dickhead Johnson rubbing his arse all over our country's governance and the queen dutifully signs everything he does through

Well she get everyone to vote for him after all.

It's all well and good saying you're against capital punishment but how can you judge unless you've been hanged from the neck until dead?

From the Irish times:
QuoteHaving a monarchy next door is a little like having a neighbour who's really into clowns and has daubed their house with clown murals, displays clown dolls in each window and has an insatiable desire to hear about and discuss clown-related news stories. More specifically, for the Irish, it's like having a neighbour who's really into clowns and, also, your grandfather was murdered by a clown.

I use imperial because so much of our stuff is imported from the US but I had to basically learn it from scratch and it's ludicrous. A whole extra system that I still have to convert into metric to have any idea what it really means.

If you find anyone who thinks this is a good idea ask them the number of fluid ounces in a pint or how many furlongs they reckon it is to the shops, because I doubt any fucker actually knows beyond surface level "1lb is about half a kilo, and a foot is like... this much I reckon".

greencalx

I always found the whole metric martyr thing so tedious as shops could always display prices in other units as well, it's just that they had to do it in metric.

https://www.gov.uk/weights-measures-and-packaging-the-law

Complete waste of fucking time.

Ferris

And it's been out of use for 50 years so essentially the only people who grew up with those measurements has now retired having spent their entire working lives dealing in metric.

As you say - what is the target of the policy? To appease dipshit boomers I suppose. It's all so transparent.

Oh well.
