Sad, but with those numbers on the YouTube special already, I guess it's time to move on up.

Memorex MP3

Didn't think Stav's special was great but he's obviously got top notch compere skills and easily could do quite well with some hosting gigs on TV if he got the chance. Very savvy move to do a free special on youtube as you'd have to imagine the view count will open a lot of doors for him.

He's been switched off on the podcast for at least a year at this stage and it really wasn't working for me anymore.

Assume the formality of the departure is to do with how Nick manages the revenue? Isn't it typically a 50-25-25 split with Nick keeping the merch money? Hard to maintain some kind of system like that when one person is going to be unavailable for big chunks of time.

I'd be surprised if Stav had any mainstream doors available to him - I think the content of the pod has probably put paid to that.

Stonefish

This is weird as I haven't really heard many recent episodes as I went back to the beggining after finding newer episodes didn't have the same energy. I'm still surprised to hear Stav actually pulled the trigger though as it seems like they've all been joking about quitting from episode 2.

Would anyone be kind enough to let me know any key/illuminating recent episodes that might catch me up on the drama? It sounds like the Adam hosted episodes might be good and the Caleb one. I did see the Adam episodes pop up but I skipped them as I prefer the OCB episodes.

This one sounds useful too if anyone knows the episode number:
Quote from: Nowhere Man on February 25, 2022, 03:46:02 PMThat was a nice little low key episode with just Nick and Adam after Nick's "mini heart attack".

And this one too:

Quote from: amputeeporn on June 12, 2022, 10:37:25 PMThe show apparently ending has brought some nice tension to the chat (Stav openly saying to Nick, when Adam was out of the room, 'in fact, if starting next week, you guys wanna do this, just you and Adam, you let me know.'), as well as some genuine reminiscence about the early days, ha, as well as Nick's sincere wish of what his next job could be.
t interesting that neither Adam or Nick or Cum Town were in the lengthy acknowledgments list.

Jerzy Bondov

I will miss Stav. The Caleb one was great, get Caleb. I think that might have been a Patreon episode. I dunno. Whatever man this shits boring who cares

I always assumed that was a bit cos I don't see how it could have lasted so long with Nick taking twice the share of the others on the basis that he bought the podcasting gear.

My guess is that getting 10k or so a month for doing relatively little work - while amazing - is probably a bit of a motivation killer. By cutting that cord it's going to force him to put all his effort into stand up.

(Feel free to point out that he has already been touring for much of the past 12 months and has just released his special so not sure how gaining an extra two hours a week and a big black hole in your finances is especially useful)

dontpaintyourteeth

This came out before he announced he was leaving, but he does talk about how the pod is the dumbest thing he's ever done and how he wants to be recognised as a standup etc etc. I definitely struggle to understand because who would say no to that sort of money for two hours a week? And, I mean, his standup material is good enough but it's not exactly a million miles away from cumtown, is it? He's not deconstructing the form or whatever the fuck. Ah well, who cares.

Dr Rock

If he has eyes on anything beyond stand-up (acting?) it might be difficult if he was still on Cumtown.

I can easily imagine Stav being perfectly happy taking an 8% cut in exchange for having to do absolutely nothing other than show up for the recordings.

It's always been very much Nick's podcast too, like, that's probably the only reason Nick hasn't bailed on it in a spiral at some point.

It was definitely becoming quite a toxic system for Stav. Getting so well remunerated for so long with so little effort on his end that was beginning to become quite annoyingly whiny about the two hours of work he did have to do each week

amputeeporn

Stav's exit note seems a little pointed (again not mentioning Nick or Adam), and, according to the just-uploaded 'production meeting' episode, where they kind of discuss Stav leaving, Nick makes it clear that Stav gave them no warning. As in, they were expecting him to do the show this week and had to get a friend in as a replacement. I think that's a shame.

But with that said, I am glad that they just about managed to end it without any kind of public fall-out. And it's probably better than more six months of whatever was going on between them. I suspect they'll both chill out about it one day and riff again, and that's a fun thing to imagine.

This episode's different - but part of that might be Norm Wilkerson, an older comedian who Nick poignantly describes as 'the only person who ever believed in me'. That's nice, I remember them being good friends on the old Stanhope forums, when Mullen was the funniest 16-year-old kid on the internet.

I hope he drops all this stuff about dumping the show and actually works out his shit with it. If he feels like he's grown out of it, then let the show grow, too.

A seismic event in the cumniverse, something that's never happened to the show before: change.

Stonefish

Bloody hell, this production meeting episode is great! If I'm Stav I'd be thinking dijfu?

I think Nick and Adam sound slightly frazzled in that latest episode and there's a sort of mellow, tender energy that's interesting, although there's also hints of them feeling a bit invigorated by the change to the status quo. I'm curious about just how short-notice Stav's exit was.

Heartened by Mulldog's sign-off: 'Stay tuned, we're gonna make it good, I promise.'

Incredibly funny insight into Nick, with Norm's revelation about how often he's told him the Jewish thing. Perfect to come up on this episode, where they're (gently) discussing maturing and cleaning up their act.

MrsWarboysLover

I feel like every time I comment on cumtown I need to add the caveat - I don't hate Stav, he's contributed a lot of good things to the show - but it is pretty funny he thinks he's going to be a success in any way outside of the podcast. I watched his standup show and it was a lot worse than I thought it would be - it wasn't bad, but it was so bland and middle of the road. I can't believe he's leaving what's essentially money for nothing so he can pursue a standup career with such little talent.
I think he's honestly burned all of his bridges in showbusiness because of cumtown anyway (any time Nick's tried to do anything else something comes up from the pod to haunt him).
I think it's a really delusional move from him.
Having said that, I'm glad he's leaving, because he was getting increasingly irritating on the podcast for a variety of reasons.

I said this on Twitter: It's the end of Withnail and I. Mullen is Withnail. For the time being, Stav is Marwood.

He'll be back in a few months

I don't think Stav's actual material is particularly mind-blowing from what I've seen, but he's clearly a very confident, natural performer with a real gift for crowd work, and that doesn't count for nothing. Of the three of them he's always seemed the most invested in his stand-up career and with his first special racking up 2 million youtube views while his various short clips regularly get hundreds of thousands of views on YT/Tiktok etc., I don't think it's too unreasonable for him to think that he might be on the verge of a bit of a breakthrough.

It's definitely hard to imagine walking away from a gig that involves riffing aimlessly for 2 hours a week and making $200k a year or whatever it is, but maybe he's just found it increasingly unfulfilling to sit and play Nick Mullen's foil for 6 years, or maybe the more dickish elements of the show's fanbase being overfamiliar and hostile towards him online and treating him as a punching bag is something he doesn't want to put up with now that he's got a bit of independent success. Or maybe it's the more directly cynical reason of him/his management deciding it's best not to be associated with a podcast that carries the baggage and notoriety that Cum Town does. Or maybe it's some mix of all of the above or something completely different. Who knows.

frajer

I'd drifted off the Cum boys for the last dozen or so eps, but gave the latest one a try and thought it was strong. Will definitely try to keep up again.

Good for Stav for breaking out of his comfort zone and pursuing what he wanted. As others have said I wasn't blown away by his YT stand-up show but it was enjoyable and he's a charismatic performer.

Unless there's some awful behind-the-scenes shit I've missed, feels like it's all worked out for the best?

dontpaintyourteeth

I feel like I can't really begrudge any of the boys for anything they do at this point because no other podcast (besides maybe Athletico Mince) has made me laugh as much.

It would be good if Mullen saw this as an opportunity to mix things up a bit though.

WhoMe

I think Stav will do fine outside the podcast, I can see him becoming a bit of a journeyman 'special guest' on podcasts, online/TV shows and has already developed a fairly loyal following for his own stuff. He's the sort of guy you can imagine getting a netflix comedy series at some point.
It should be good for the podcast to be forced to adapt, Nick will take it on in a 'we'll show you' sort of way.

I went to r/redscarepod to see all the worst gossip (as I do for the worst gossip on anything really); seems like a few of them reckon Stav was getting restless at how trapped he was in the role and Nick having the MDE guy on as a guest was the breaking point. Some claims he hadn't recorded a show since that (I'm way behind so I wouldn't have a clue) and other claims he unfollowed Nick on a few things directly after. All think he's trying to distance himself from the show to bolster his career and that he's deluded.

Given the fanbase the show has I have zero doubt that people will manage to dig up every single little thing.

Def think it's better for everyone to shake things up a bit. Generally speaking Stav seems to be in a far better place than he was even a couple of years ago (the missing tooth leg injury era was legit concerning with how committed he seemed to be to neglecting himself) and the show has probably given him some level of lifelong security in terms of owning a place, helping his family out a bit, etc.
The real death of the podcast will be whenever Stav comes back as a regular.

Stonefish

I'm sad to see him go. I always thought he was funny and complimented Nick so well. I hope he does find success outside of the pod. However, it does feel a bit like what regularly happened on the Howard Stern show where a contributor would get frustrated and leave to go out on their own. Sometimes it worked out, often it wouldn't with someone conflating the appeal of the show with their own. Hopefully Stav will be more a Billy West than a Jackie Martling.

Schnapple

I wish Stav all the best, and assuming the legacy of Cum Town doesn't destroy his career in the relative mainstream, think he will be fine. His standup definitely has its moments, and his crowd work is more than above-par. Nonetheless, it's weird to see clips of his live stuff fall into my algorithm with clickbait titles and wacky photoshop illustrations of the material within. It's basically the exact sort of shit he would have joined in with mocking mercilessly until even just recently on the pod. It's definitely far, far removed from Nick's perspective, oppressive as that I can expect that to be after so many years. But I still can't imagine there will be too much bad blood between them.

I do think this probably does signal the true beginning of the end of the show. I spent a hungover Sunday revisiting old bits from the CT peak, probably circa 2018, when it felt genuinely refreshing and even transgressive. It could never have sustained that energy, but fuck me, it was so, so funny.

Rizla

I thought that was one of the funniest episodes for a long time. Stav's great but he's brought little of value of late, good luck to him. I could see him going far and it wouldn't surprise me if there was work waiting on the proviso.

On a cumtown-adjacent note, is anyone else listening to Out For Smokes? Mike Recine, Sean McCarthy and Scott Chaplain plus the odd guest. Nice format, very funny and quite informative. A perfect blend of CT and Grubstakers, really.

I'll give that a go, thanks. I've been relistening to the bonus episodes from the beginning, and Mike Recine is great. He could become a semi-regular guest on Cum Town for sure, along with Jamel, Evan, Jake and a few others. Ian Fidance is of course very near the top of funniest guests but I think he needs to be used sparingly. Still, they've got a lot of people to pick from if they want to do a revolving door of guests.

This latest one was nice but there are only so many Nick and Adam episodes I can listen to. I'm not an Adam hater by any means, but i do find him genuinely annoying at times, and he's rarely made me laugh. I'm aware that he and Nick are very close friends (more than Nick and Stav were probably) so it'll be interesting to see how Adam does with more time to talk and less mockery.

Stav's stand up was OK. A few verbal tics that I could do without, but the material was solid enough for a dumb guy, and he's obviously put the hours in.

amputeeporn

I've no idea how this stuff works, but could there be something in Nick saying he's stepping back into a 'sort of Lorne Michaels role', with Stav leaving?

Obviously, the assumption is that after Shane Gillis, no one from that world is making it to SNL. But they did just announce that some big cast members are leaving, and if Stav didn't have Cum Town on his resume, he'd be the perfect profile and demographic. How many of the cast members have got a viral special (that handily omits all mention of cum town and the hosts)?

Maybe a mad thought, it might just be acting work. I know he has an indie film coming out where he plays a fat sleaze-bag or something. Since he split up with his ex-girlfriend, she's become a quite famous film-star...

A lot of you seem to be confused so just to clarify: both the regular weekly episodes and the premium episodes will continue on their regular schedule (Sundays and wednesdays, plus a 3 day late grace period) but the show is now transitioning into The Adam Friedland Show.

I guess there was some technical error with Spotify in the podcast description that cause the show to disappear for 12 hours but all we had to do was clear the cache on the podcast host's website and now it's back up.

I know, end of an era, you're all very sad, so are we, but we got six months to make something fun with The Adam Friedland Show.

For starters, you can subscribe to https://www.youtube.com/c/TheAdamFriedlandShow

We'll be trying out a studio next week, video coming soon, so long as I don't die of coronavirus by then.

It's a new world boys. The 2020s have started. Web3 is here. We're middle aged. Everyone is going to learn to embrace sickness and death, and through that, faith. But not in a weird frog catholic way in like a home fitness instructor kind of way.

Love,

dontpaintyourteeth

a very nice message from my best friend Nick

amputeeporn

Now that they're actually going through with this, I'm starting to see that a show called The Adam Friedland show, where Nick is in dominant creative control and clearly the main host, could be one of the all-time great bits.

Think Nick edited the patreon update since you posted it, because it now says that he doesn't mean that the show will end in six months, but that they want to have it figured out by then.
