Quote from: BritishHobo on February 06, 2024, 05:09:05 PMAlan getting fleeced in LA is very funny but also one of those moments that's so fucking bleak that I really struggle with it. I just think, you absolute fucking idiot, why can you not help yourself? It's like having a mate who always does the wrong thing, and you try to support them, but eventually they do something so stupid and unthinking, such an act of self-sabotage, such a lack of common sense that you can't help yourself anymore. What were you THINKING

If it's any comfort, Alan himself doesn't seem to know he's been conned and just thought he did some favours for a (deceased) friend.

New telly is obviously good but I'm currently full of Alan.  I haven't yet finished the last audiobook and I'd struggle to tell you what it was called.  They may benefit from easing off on the hours and hours of content.

I think just a return to the sitcom format would be the ticket. Wouldn't have to change the type of thing he's up to much, just seeing him living his life again rather than telling us about his life would be great

madhair60

they can't top IAP series 2 and they should stop trying.

Not that I wish to taint or derail this thread with OFT (Our Favourite Transphobe), but making that Partridge clip above reminded me that I had "AIan" Partridge read some of Linehan's awful book, and they turned out brilliant, if I say so myself — mostly because Graham's self-pitying screed of bitterness gels so well with Alan's voice.

Good Hank

I like the idea of an Alan-written fiction much better than I suspect the execution would be, based mostly on the Garth Marenghi books, which didn't work in long-form for me. But I would like to see an episode of Swallow, which I anticipate would have a pleasing Darkplace/Comrade Detective knowingness.

I do resent your having made me consume any of his nonsense but my god they work surprisingly well as Partridge

I've just noticed (and call me slow if you must) many of Alan's protagonists from his failed scripts are named after birds:
Swallow
Peacock (from FTOH S2)
Did he have a canal cop called Drake too? Or an I making that up?

Absolutely incredible.

I would happily just have more of the same documentary and podcast stuff but it would be great to see something a bit different. The Swallow idea seems so brilliantly obvious you have to assume they have at least considered it. But even if they didn't do that it would be nice to see something approaching a more 'conventional' sitcom even if it is still using the mockumentary style.

Something centered around The Partridge Players. Alans attempts at play writing have been some of the funniest parts of the Gibbons era. The William and Kate bit and 'The Glowering Glassblower'. And the format would allow them to have a bigger cast. They could then incorporate loads of the Norwich locals we've heard about in the books and audio but never seen. Have The Boxley Wheatsheaf and it's regulars play a big part. Still have Lynn and Simon featuring. Putting on a play for the locals could be the central story of the series but there'd be plenty of opportunity for Alan to just be going around doing Alan things.

The more I think about it the more I think it should definitely happen. There's so much material already waiting to be expanded on and out on screen. I assume the documentary Portillo/Coast/magazine show style is cheaper to make? But why wouldn't they want throw money at this? It could be budgeted at slightly more than something like The Detectorists?

Waiting for Guffman x Partridge. It could be brilliant.

These are both amazing and horrible at the same time.

Without derailing the thread into nerd-land (but thankfully away from GL), I have honestly never heard as good a 'deepfake' voice. Is this a public model or did you do the training yourself?

I did it myself, but it was easy since there was so much clear, high-quality Partridge available from the audiobooks.

Edit: Sorry, I misunderstood. I did use a public model, Elevenlabs, but I input all the samples and did the tweaks and stuff.

I think it would be quite funny to edit bits of that alongside bits of a Partridge audiobook, in order to play it to friends and say, "It's all gone a bit political..."

Proactive

What is the title of this series in reference to? I find myself irritated by it.

They could do a 'Partridge Pilots' series. 6 episodes of pilots self funded by Partridge to try to get back on TV, that way they could keep it cheap looking, and incorporate none professional elements. This could also include a stand up episode, Swallow etc

Famous Mortimer

Quote from: The Late Satoru Iwata on February 06, 2024, 05:46:38 AMThe only Partridge idea I've ever had that I'd like to see happen is another book: not a memoir for a bloody change but a Dirty Dozen inspired military escapade or Bond-style espionage thriller as written by Alan. So - obvious insert characters, petty grievances/point scoring, odd minutiae and the narrative occasionally pointing out how clever it thinks it's being. Do it, Gibbo-Coogan. Especially the audiobook version,
The Garth Marenghi in-character book must have given a few IP holders some ideas.

EDIT: I see it was mentioned. I thought it was really good, felt completely in his voice and was funny too.

This I would like. They could do their travelogue, a play by the Partridge Players, game show... err, and one more.

I love that Alan wants to centre himself in all his stupid projects as much as possible, but couldn't bring himself to play Freddy.

Current partridge is excellent but I do miss Armando Ianuccis contribution to the character and it's wrong to make monkeys write comedy anyway
