Iannucci pens Boris Johnson/COVID satire

Dunno what it says of my opinion of Iannucci in terms of political satire that the most appealing part of this is that he's got Patrick Marber directing it.
When did they last collaborate? Marber is still pretty successful in theater isn't he?

I absolutely think he could still be capable of producing a pretty good project by assembling the right team, I have big doubts he could write an especially large portion of it though and I get the impression he hasn't really shown much ability to bring new collaborators into his circle since the Thick of It.
And really, I'm not sure he has much to offer especially interesting young talent if his focus is skewing so heavily towards fine but a bit boring shite like David Copperfield and turgid indulgent stuff like a covid Paradise Lost parody.

Yeah, I think he hasn't done anything great since... Veep? Avenue 5 and the Paradise Lost thing were career lows IMO and The Death of Stalin was OK at best. Still, he does say this is going to be 'angry' so that's promising at least.

well at the end of each show we can truly say, that was curtains for Bunter.

I hope he sticks it to the man who made Johnson's power grab possible, the deranged socialist who made Labour unelectable.

I was unfortunately taken into receipt of it via a misguided relative at Christmas.

That epic poem is so shit, so offensively banal and so smugly stitched into that rancid medium, it's like touching an electric fence. Every time you so much look at the contents you are angrily repelled by every synapse in your nervous system.

I guess unlike when he started out in comedy there are fewer people to tell him, to make him stop.

I'm really sick of poshos doing their little, centrist stabs at their fellow poshos, and in doing so giving them notoriety and oxygen. HIGNFY and Iannucci can get to fuck.

In his next suspiciously self-indulgent project, Armando Iannucci takes a sideways look at the Truss government through the medium of fully-orchestral Mahlerian song cycle for alto and tenor.

Might be good...

Big problem when mainstream satire tries to have a swing at Johnson is they simply try and big up the Tim nice but dim image that HE himself cultivated. See the god awful Spitting image remake.

Strangely the best swipes at Johnson are the guardian cartoon depicting him as the visceral unpleasant sack of guts and shit that he is.

It's why Boris Johnson is a Fucking Cunt and Boris Johnson is still a fucking Cunt worked so well for me. Just the unashamed hatred of the lard arse prick.

I've just started reading David Stubbs' new book Different Times: A History of British Comedy and the preamble is a coatdown of Boris Johnson and the way he was able to use a comedic persona to advance himself. A great read, it's included with the Kindle sample so you can get it for free. Well worth a look.

Wow. Just think: Armando created  or co-created Partridge, The Day Today, The Armistice, The Thick of It, Veep, The Death of Stalin.
All brilliant, funny and successful.
What a total bastard.

Genuinely no idea what your point is. Care to elaborate?

Basically, seems to be a lot of hate for Armando on this thread despite his excellent record.

He was funny and seemed likeable 20 years ago, yes. Now he is unfunny and has revealed himself to be a tit to boot.

The Death of Stalin, Veep and The Thick of It were all under twenty years ago. Not convinced he's a tit personally.

He's probably still a nice guy in person and he's definitely made some classics, but he's gone off the boil in a way that suggests the problem isn't a lack of interest or effort (or even waning powers), but that the world around him has changed in a direction that now make his politics seem largely about propping up elements of the status quo. That's not what his best work once did.

It's a problem because while it's always possible for someone to have a late career resurgence, it's a lot rarer for someone to realise that oh shit, the fundamental basics of my world view are now fucked

This is sounding more dubious by the second.

It's because he was once so good that the decline causes saw such profound pain and disillusionment.

Oh! Some people on Twitter don't like him either? Well, say no more. Case closed.

Do you see anyone here saying that Iannucci was never good? His "excellent record" up to The Death of Stalin 6 years ago (the most recent thing you've mentioned) isn't particularly in dispute, is it. It's rather the whole reason why a lot of us find it disappointing that he hasn't made anything particularly good since then while also developing into an annoying leftward-punching establishment liberal over the same period.

be really nice if you could put forward a reason why he's been good recently instead of arguing against what the disagreeable people in your head are saying!

Okay!
David Copperfield was good too (2020). But even if he hadn't done anything good during the last six years (a period which included a global pandemic) his overall record looks pretty good to me.
Is this criticism stemming from the fact he isn't a Corbyn supporter? Because, if so, I don't think that's really a good enough reason to publicly demolish him.

Was going to write a post saying something along those lines myself. But I don't have to now. Thanks.
