If the Governor of Nevada says no, can the Mayor of Las Vegas still allow businesses to open up? Not sure how this works.

Zetetic

I think, in the American system, it depends on who has the most firepower.

Mulch?  Since when have they been so honest?

And they're mostly not wearing masks. Darwinism happening in near real-time.

Trump now saying he disagrees with some of Kemp's plan to re-open Georgia. Will this make Kemp think again?

QuoteIn the United States, Attorney General William Barr has compared coronavirus shutdowns to "house arrest" and said the Justice Department could take legal action against states.

Speaking on radio programme The Hugh Hewitt Show, Barr said: "These are unprecedented burdens on civil liberties. The idea you have to stay in your house is disturbingly close to house arrest.

"We're looking carefully at a number of these rules and if we think one goes too far, we initially try to jawbone the governors into rolling them back or adjusting them. If they're not and people bring lawsuits, we [will] file statement of interest and side with the plaintiffs."...

Bit rich coming from people who keep children in cages.

You're supposed to keep them in the fridge otherwise they go off.

Dewt

Yeah, unlike European children they wash the natural protective coating off so you can't keep them at room temperature.

All Gas No Brakes, a hilariously straight-faced two-man independent media team who tour America interviewing some of the most batshit, idiotic, weird and controversial groups of people (well worth following this guy on social media, his edits are hilarious) has been at the anti-lockdown protests recently. This stuff is truly unbelievable. Imagine being a lawyer in America and going out with a placard comparing lockdown to slavery.

America can't be as mad as this can it?
Or are their mad people just a bit louder than ours?

This, basically. Everything in America is amplified/exaggerated. I mean, I love the place and the people but would often find that group conversations were just people taking turns to shout whatever was on their mind into the air.

Fucking hell nags, those people are really very mad indeed.

AGNB has an excellent knack of finding the best (read: worst) subjects to talk to, plus his blankly delivered line of questioning that ekes out the most bonkers qualities of his interviewees is somewhere between Louis Theroux and Nathan Fielder. Ordinarily his videos at porn star conventions and juggalo gatherings are out-and-out hilarious but in this protest video it's just really disturbing.

'Are you scared to die?'
'No more scared than I am for anything else.'

The wrapped-up microphone is a very amusing touch.

I wonder if a proportion of the UK population will start acting like this in the next ten years.

As mentioned in some of the replies; there has been numerous other references to this being a version of Rosa Parks.

You can read more about the restaurant reopening here: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Harris-County-backs-down-as-Hedwig-Village-15225164.php

These people will have to take their masks off to eat inside.Unless Trump has now advised that restaurants can open if the food is administered via an enema or something.

I don't know if the people are really more exaggerated. I think it has more to do with the fact that there are no meaningful tabloids in the U.S. like in the U.K., so all of the mass media gets folded together and bullshit astro-turf protests like these are instead amplified by the "real" news.

Texas now following Georgia and announcing a lifting of the stay at home order.

https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/coronavirus/governor-abbott-to-address-reopening-of-texas-economy-monday/2358748/

QuoteDuring a news conference in Austin Monday afternoon, Abbott said restaurants, malls, retail stores and movie theaters can reopen on May 1 but will be limited to 25% of their capacity. Museums and libraries are included, but interactive stations and exhibits must remain closed. Within malls, the governor said all food courts, play areas and interactive displays also must remain closed.

How well will the 25% limit be enforced? This seems like a very bad idea and is probably being done to reduce the amount of money the state has to pay for unemployment benefits, which is disgusting.

Has it even properly reached Georgia and Texas yet?
