Who else read that as Mike Batt?

Famous Mortimer

Quote from: Calistan on June 02, 2022, 07:22:21 PMI'm wondering this too. Haven't bought tickets yet but will likely go. Years ago when I was 18 or 19 I took three buses to see him in Cork. Well worth the 11 hours travel but that was Mould with a band (and what a band - plenty of Husker and Sugar songs). Also flew to see him in Belgium. I'm a bit worried that for every song he'll do that thing where he hums the melody in order to fill the vacuum his band would otherwise fill.
I saw him with Mercury Rev in support, in 1998 according to a quick search. Bloody hell, it doesn't seem that long ago.

Coming up in November, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, which I'm really looking forward to. Oh, and local death metal band Fister, one of whom owns the bar I was in the other night.

Kankurette

I'm going to see Einstürzende Neubauten in Dublin next month. Because why not. I've never been to Dublin and my flight the next day is a late one, so I've got a whole day after the gig to do some sightseeing.

Yes. Yes you should. I don't know if David Yow's still with them though, he was when I saw them at Rebellion a few years ago.

Just saw Billie Eilish! Absolutely incredible, what a superstar. Thought her coffeeshop vocals would struggle at an arena but the show was put together so well, great mix of her bangers and her ballads. Great visuals. Really impressed by her as a celeb, she's preaching loads of positivity and was wearing a Blondie t-shirt and running shorts, not working her sexuality at all. Would be an incredible role model if I was a 13 yo goth girl. Was on 2cb and got emosh on several occasions

JaDanketies

Also because there were so many teenage girls the queue at the bar was much smaller than usual, and when I went in the gents it was all nice and clean

Any opportunity to see brother Watt in action should be taken. Whereabouts?

EDIT: to add my own, RTJ at the Barrowlands on Saturday. Never seen a bad gig in that venue, pistol and fist raised, screaming "FUCK THE QUEEN!" at a bemused Killer Mike. Great stuff.

jobotic

New Cross Inn.

Ever since my younger brother borrowed my Minutemen records he's been a huge fan and has met Mike Watt a few times.

And Gone Fishin' was a massive album for me (first Flipper record I heard).

So we ought to go.

Hmmm just had a look, was planning a trip down to a mate's in brighton around that time, might have to incorporate a stop in london...

JaDanketies

went to an EDM night put on by this guy Animaux last night, loved it. Had a bunch of ket and mdma and got home at about 345am. And I'm going to see noise-hoppers Dalek tonight too! Three gigs in a week, I feel like a young man.

And then Alanis Morissette with my fiancee in a couple of weeks!

JaDanketies

Dalek were incredibly loud. I've loved them more previous times but I was tired and hungry. Still good though. Made me consider actually getting earplugs

axel2019

Three gigs in the next few days, that as well as my dog taking its exams and getting a new bathroom fitted makes me feel tired already!

- Bob Mould
- BLK JKS
- Hey Colossus

Calistan

Went to The National last week. Very good - however we were very tired and near the back of the crowd which is never a good spot to be. Saw them in Galway about eight years ago and they were better then - his voice was also in better shape then - he can't really scream or shout anymore without it breaking.

Next gigs: Bob Mould (maybe, still haven't decided), Pixies (I've seen them seven or eight times before so know the drill - fully expect this to be a disappointing experience since it's a big outdoor gig and it will be full of event junkies as is common in Ireland), Sigur Rós (haven't listened to them in years but surely should be a good show?), Florence & The Machine (not a massive fan but the girlfriend loves her so we'll see what happens).

Saw RTJ too in Manchester, what a fucking show. Incredible energy, the crowd were absolutely loving it. They they must have done about 20 songs as well - great showcase of just how strong their catalogue is. Felt thankful to catch it too as Birmingham next night was cancelled, El-P with laryngitis.

He rallied himself for Primavera, bemoaned the fact he'd been in a Spanish hotel room recovering and masturbating instead of being able to check out the rest of the festival.

Any fellow CaB XTC lovers ever seen EX-TC? I took the plunge and got a ticket for the 100 Club gig next month. Nearly thirty notes for essentially a tribute band with the original drummer but what the hey. I missed the TC&I gigs the other year in the assumption they'd end up playing outside of Swindon so this is probably as close as I'm ever gonna get.

Kentish Town Forum was a bit of a sweatbox last night but I didn't care because that Deftones gig felt pretty special. When a band that's been going that long can create transcendent moments like they did at points last night, it's so impressive. Atmosphere in the room was amazing. Advertised as a one-off more intimate gig and it really felt like that, despite it still being a 2500 cap room.

Nine Inch Nails on Friday. Just seeing the best heavy bands this week.

LurkMcGee

Doing Greenman again this year, thoroughly enjoyed it last year and was with a good mix of people in a good spot. Interesting line up, too. Arab Strap is probably one I'm looking forward to and getting to see Psychedelic Porn Crumpets again.

Anyone going to see Unsane on their tour this year? Bristol gig was announced, so scooped them tickets up the other day to avoid having to trek to London.

(Also this is my first post - hello all and hopefully I don't make an arse of me self on 'ere).

Hello!

I'm tempted by Unsane, I love their particular brand of surly, misanthropic bashing about and they're playing a nice small venue that would suit them nicely. Totally skint this month so hoping there's still tickets come payday.

Beck last night in Manchester. I'm a bit of a Beck dilettante, being familiar with Odelay, odd singles and the last ten years or so. Was decent enough. Nice to go to a gig where the sound is loud (and good) enough to cut out the chatter, but the problem of cunts gravitating towards me and yabbering throughout persists.

He played 38 or so songs, but my mate who is much more into Beck than I said most of them were only halves, which seems a weird way of doing it.

WhoMe

Decided to grab a ticket for Sepultura and Crowbar in November, mainly for Crowbar. Never actually been to a proper metal gig and who knows how many more times these bands will come across the pond now that they're getting on a bit. Sod it, should be fun.

If you fancy a good metal gig sooner, grab a ticket for High on Fire (tour starts next week). They're like a sludge Motorhead complete with their own Lemmy in Matt Pike.

WhoMe

I'll check them out, nice one. I barely listen to Metal these days but those down-tuned chuggy Crowbar riffs really scratch an itch, wanted to see them with a big heavy sound system once at least.

Gigs I've got lined up:

Brass Against at the Brudenell - saw them supporting Tool and I was impressed. Apparently this leg of the tour has a different singer (not the one from the famous pissing incident) but she looks good in the clips I've seen.

Bob Mould at the Brudenell - I'm going to this after a day at the cricket at Headingley so I will need to go easy on the beer during the day. Last time I saw him was with a full band so it will be interesting to see how he adapts that to just him and a guitar.

Just booked a ticket for Zeal & Ardor in Manchester. The album is one of my favourites this year and I'll also be seeing them at Arctangent. He just keeps getting better.

Nine Inch Nails on Friday was a really good show. Open air at the Eden Project, mostly in daylight, is maybe not the ideal environment for them (atmosphere noticeably stepped up once darkness descended) but the set was excellent. Tightest drumming performance I think I've ever seen too – Ilan Rubin is phenomenal.

I've seen Nails a dozen times, and still yet to see a show that hasn't contained a song I've not seen before. Your particular show would have included 7 newbies for my list.

This is the first tour for a long time I haven't got a ticket. I baulked at paying 75 quid for a theatre show, and let it pass, but I'm now tempted to drop £120 on StubHub. I can't justify paying that much though, surely. It's fucking disgraceful.

lankyguy95

I was about to say I wouldn't pay that amount just on principle but then I had to drive to Cornwall for that and book a hotel for the night so I'm not in a position to chat about chucking away money for a gig.

Saw High on Fire on Saturday night at Chalk in Brighton. They absolutely steamrollered me, haven't experienced that level of volume and thunderous drumming since....well the last time I saw them tbf.

Saw them at MCR Apollo on the 20th, first NIN gig since 1996. Worth every penny (especially as Mrs Canes paid). Shame it was The Eden Project on the 18th and not us that got Happiness In Slavery but apart from that, perfect.

It was pissing down there, in all fairness I guess they deserved a special treat

LurkMcGee

Bugger. Primus cancelled. Was really looking forward to seeing them.

Noticed a few cancellations recently, same happened with Helmet.

tried writing a reply to this 3 times now that doesn't sound predominantly negative before you go and see them but I'll just say for now they weren't shit..like I said in the XTC thread they were fine. so yeah, I hope you enjoy it, report back to the XTC thread when you're done!
