New Windows taskbar fucking thing fuck off

My laptop suddenly has a new bit of bullshit at the bottom right:

How to I get rid of it?

I've googled it, but the only advice was how to get rid of particular topics. I want the whole thing gone.

Endicott

QuoteTo get rid of it from the taskbar entirely, a better solution is to right-click the Weather icon and go to News and interests > Turn off. Then it will no longer appear, and you don't have to worry about it.

seepage

right-click in a blank bit of the taskbar --> News and interests --> Turn off

They also added it to Edge: click the cog button (top right) in a new tab --> Custom --> Content --> Content off

An tSaoi

I tried that, but there is no Turn off option. I don't have a news and interests line when I right click the taskbar.

Neomod

Turned up on my update. Got rid instantly.

By the way An tSaoi, how do you get the dark CaB theme?

An tSaoi

I have no idea. You're talking to the man who can't find the on-off button on ta taskbar thing, so changing the colour scheme is beyond me.

Right-click on the Weather widget like Endicott said?

I tried that, and the option isn't available to me. Look at that right click menu in my last post. It's not there.

seepage

Maybe it'll appear after another restart?

Alternatively, here's a page on how to remove it using the Group Policy Editor instead: https://www.askvg.com/tip-completely-disable-and-remove-news-and-interests-feature-in-windows-10/

Neomod

I think he may mean the weather widget (the little fluffy cloud)?

Endicott

Just for ref, this is what it should look like. That's from clicking on the taskbar, the widget is gone.

Bit rum you can't see this. I'd try the group policy link.

An tSaoi

Rum indeed. Clocking the cloud hasn't helped.

I'll try Group Policy then.

Edit: It worked, thank Christ.

Thanks everyone.

Just imagine what the next version of Windows will be like. I expect by default programs will be restricted to a 800x600 window in the middle of the screen, with Microsoft News, Shopping etc. filling up the rest of the desktop.

Saw a preview had leaked the other day and meant to start a thread.

Rounded corners, no squares on the Start Menu and, for some ineffable reason, the pinned apps centred on the taskbar:

i made a thread but it's probably the logical progression of this one anyway given, it looks like this 'new' thing might be related to some of the changes they may have been making for it anyway.
