QuoteHe said Lord Mandelson has no formal role in the party. Asked on LBC about the person who heckled him with the question "Where's Peter Mandelson?", Starmer said he wished he had been quicker yesterday, and responded: "In your head." He went on:
[Mandelson has] got no formal role at all and I personally haven't spoken to Peter in some time. But look, I'm not going to pretend I don't take ... I have all sorts of conversations with people, I'm very happy to do so, so I'm not pretending there aren't people I don't talk to.

Wow. Negative clause overload.

He is not pretending that there are not people he doesn't talk to.

So is he not pretending that there are people he talks to?
Or pretending that there are people he doesn't talk to?
Or pretending that there are not people he talks to?

What exactly did the 1966 Word cup winning team do for this country (part of a country), other than winning the football?

Fuck all.

Buelligan

I think they showed everyone that England is the important bit of Britain.

Roger Hunt ran a trucking business, could do with that now eh?

king_tubby

Interesting that Harman has called for Cressida Dick to resign, when Starmer's so matey with her.

I'm going to say, Nicky, that best three Britons are: Frank Skinner, David Baddiel, and The Lightning Seeds.

He was very emphatic and clear about the blood, you've got to give him that.

The man can't even commit to a favourite James Bond. I mean it's not exactly a minefield, is it. Connery, Moore or Craig would all be accepted as safe, non-controversial answers by a healthy cross-section of the British public. Or go with Brosnan since "let's go back to the 90s" is basically Labour's key pitch these days. If he said Dalton or Lazenby then yeah, he might raise a few eyebrows from Joe Public, but come on.
Connery said hitting women is sometimes necessary, Moore was a life-long Conservative Party supporter, and Pierce Brosnan fought an evil newspaper magnate. Clearly has to be Craig.

EDIT: On the other hand Connery, Moore, and Craig for 3 greatest Britons would be less stupid than what he said.

Why is the Brosnan one bad

The suggestion being that Starmer wants to court evil newspaper magnates, not scare them off

I tell you we missed out big time by Leadbetter winning Batley & Spen. That might have been the last possible opportunity to remove Keith before.. What now, 2023?

No wonder he celebrated that like the 1966 squad won the world cup that time.

New: Told Labour is now suspending members it accuses of heckling Starmer. Multiple cases at moment - party claims suspensions are for more serious offences than that.

Unclear how protest within party is an offence so may be more. What's clear is some of hecklers suspended

No way they were getting rid of Kieth before they got the rule changes rammed through by corrupt means. 20% nominations is at least not quite as insurmountable as the 25%+ electoral college system they were hoping for though.

You misunderstand, I am saying there would have been moves from the right and left if Starmer lost Batley & Spen and a leadership contest. Those few hundred votes probably cost the left the last chance to get their foot in the door for years.

And don't they know it, hence the hurried cleansing of the party. They can't afford any more chances.

Ferris

Marine B, Nobby Stiles, and a female James Bond (actor tbd).

This will win them over. Then they'll see. They'll all see.

Is the idea that he goes company by company and tells them what their minimum wage should be?

That's fucking pathetic.

Yes I know, and I'm saying I don't think there would have been. The right were waiting for him to do his actual real job of wrecking the left's chances for good before making any moves and the PLP left didn't have the nomination numbers for a leadership challenge (and are terminally conflict-averse as we have sadly seen). I agree it would have seen Keith even more clearly holed below the waterline though. I wouldn't be surprised if he stands down once the right are confident they have everything totally sewn up for a successor.

To put it in context, the Socialist Campaign Group has 33 out of 199 Labour MPs, which is easily enough to nominate a candidate under the old rules, but under the new rules they'd need 7 more nominations. (Actually probably 8 more, as I assume the candidate can't nominate themself.)

ZoyzaSorris

You needed more nominations for a challenge though didn't you? And I dont know if enough had the balls especially given the lack of obvious challenger candidate.

olliebean

It was already 20% for a challenge, and I don't think that has changed.
