Very occasionally I come across someone whose job I don't think I could obviously do better. I think this is one of those occasions.

Which is ironic, given how terrible you are at your job doing fancy sums.

pancreas

I'll have you know I proved something on Wednesday, so there.

I'm in a union and I'm looking across at Unite and feeling jealous.

Splitting the restaurant bill equally meant you overpaid?

I can see why you're impressed with someone who knows a bit about getting what you pay for.

Buelligan

What an exciting development this is proving to be.  Looks like she'll just leave Labour and Westminster behind and show people how to sort things out.  Cannot wait.

Sebastian Cobb

I like her, I think she's good.

Sorry I can't give anything more insightful than 'vibes'.

Buelligan

Thought I'd just add this - Novara, chatting about her a couple of days ago.  Don't think it's possible to embed a time-coded link to YT, so just click the old link to watch https://youtu.be/bEW2DCeB8j8?t=2103

She's talking about getting involved in the Scottish "National Care Service" - bearing in mind this wheeze looks to be some primo SNP neolib shithousery, I wonder what the plan is there? https://www.conter.scot/2021/11/19/the-national-care-service-is-a-lie/

Props to pancs for 'Stanning Salon', btw

Buelligan

Yes, so good I felt it might be tempting something to even acknowledge it.

Who can say?  But I would say I'd very much doubt that her agenda is to help any neo-lib politician, shareholder or private company.  We'll find out when they unveil the plan, can that prospect be more concerning than them leaving it alone?  We shall see.  Doubtless, there'll be plenty of pundits on the sidelines wetting their knickers to put the boot in.

Has anyone said she's an antisemite yet?

I'm a member of Unite and very pleased with her indeed so far.

Buelligan

Wow.  First really hopeful, exciting, thing I've seen in a good old while.  She's great!  Thanks for linking.

QuoteUnite, along with NHS campaign groups including SOS:NHS and Your NHS Needs You, believes the Health and Care Bill, which is back before parliament on 1 March, will be a disaster for healthcare services, resulting in further privatisation and cuts and reduced patient access to treatments.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said:

"While our members and their families in England are being told to expect NHS waiting lists to rise for years to come, the government's priority is to pave the way for further disastrous privatisation. Every time private companies run NHS services they put profits before patients who pay the price.

"So MPs must put their constituents before their private sector mates and vote to junk the Bill. Of course, it is unlikely they will, and Unite will have to continue to fight these big corporate money moves step by step inside the NHS."

Good.

QuoteResponding to the decision by the Bank of England to raise interest rates to 0.75 per cent, Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said:

"Today's interest rate rise comes at a time when millions of working people are facing the worst cost-of-living crisis for generations, now being compounded by the unfolding tragedy in Ukraine. This rise will put even more pressure on household finances as inflation and energy bills continue to skyrocket.

"My message is clear, workers must not be made to pay for this. For any bosses who think the answer to increased costs is to dip into workers' pockets please take note: We will defend our members' jobs, pay and conditions to the hilt and will be demanding wage rises that keep up with living costs."

Yes indeed.  Probably a good time to join UNITE.

When I started this job, the head office people I talked to actually advised me to join Unite.

Which seems rare.

Quote from: The BBCThe general secretary of the UK's biggest private sector union has warned of a 'summer of discontent' over pay.

Sharon Graham said there could be hundreds of disputes involving tens of thousands of people if workers are made to "pay the price for inflation".

She said employers making a profit from workers should pay them a "proper fair wage".

Calls to limit pay rises to try to counter inflation were "abhorrent", she added.

Ms Graham, who recently took over Unite, said ordinary workers have already "had a spring, summer autumn and winter of discontent for years".

"Any employer who can pay, who has made profit out of workers, has to pay a proper fair wage to those workers," she said.

I saw her speech at the Durham miners gala. It was good. She started with a story—always a good idea. Crucially, her speech had detail, lacking from all the others. She has a plan. Not sure even Mick Lynch has worked as much shit out as she has.

TrenterPercenter

Great speech no doubt but I didn't really catch the plan? Did I miss something?

Mr_Simnock

To try and get unity between all the unons and be prepared for a long haul set of strikes, I think...

TrenterPercenter

Oh right, the Holy Grail, this has been the plan for a long time.

shoulders

Oh no, I hope the unions don't pull the general public to the left, because then by that logic Labour will need to!
