Christ. We've all seen what the top job does to people. They go in fresh-faced (YMMV) and come out absolutely fucking haggard. From Truss's baseline, if she becomes PM she'll leave No. 10 looking like Zelda from Terrahawks.

From the Grauniad.

QuoteRumours have also been circulating in government in recent days that Gray may have details of yet another gathering in Downing Street, possibly in the PM's flat and involving close friends of his wife, that has not yet come to light.

That would be too much to wish for.

EXCLUSIVE: Christian Wakeford says Gavin Williamson is the MP who threatened to cancel a new school in his constituency if he voted against govt on free school meals

He's categorical: "It was Gavin Williamson" — then education secretary.

Just seen this covered on BBC news. My first thought has been wondering if Gray ends up finding boris not guilty but his wife yes, so she could be getting thrown under the bus. My word I would love for this all to end up like that, you can imagine the infighting if that happened. No one else get the impression we are watching a gov slowly implode?

mothman

In normal times, yes, implosion would be assured if not already ongoing. But in these years of the Trump-Johnson nexus, who knows?

Nope

Glebe

The strain is beginning to show on Johnson now:

In 2020, Christian Wakeford - the former Tory MP who has just defected to Labour - co-sponsored and voted for a private members bill mandating compulsory by-elections for any MP who voluntarily defects parties.

shoulders

That's a good idea, fully behind the lad there.

Replies From View

What about the Labour MP they had before the Tory one was voted in?  Why does this Tory one get to enter the Labour meetings and go "hi, I have your job now and I will be your Labour representative in a by-election."

shoulders

Ask Wakeford, he thought it was fucking baffling too right up until he did it.

Fambo Number Mive

The Scum's view.

Yes Boris has made mistakes but look at the Remainder media (who? The Guardian, Independent and New European? Lots of other papers are reporting extensively on Johnson's covid rule breaking as well) and "left wing Twitter".

"choerographed rage" - as if politicians in the same party don't usually plan on how to take on their opposition. What about all the planted questions asked by government backbenchers at PMQs

"deafening roar" sorry the news is so loud for you, the Sun. Maybe you can print some distractions for your readers.

Also not sure how wanting to improve the deal with the EU means "surrendering full independence" especially as the government want to change the deal with the EU as well.

TrenterPercenter

Quote"This information is conclusive," said a source who knows Gray. "This is not someone saying 'I saw him or her at a party'. This is the proof of who was where, how many people were inside the building at any one time.

"She will have been looking at all that information, which is far more valuable than people's say so. It is the evidence."

So he is getting away with it then.

jobotic

Well if Murdoch has decided he is then yes, he is

TrenterPercenter

just seems highly suspect to go "oh I know what we can do, we could just check the electronic system that will tell us who was where and when, can't believe I didn't think of this before, I really hope no one will have been able to tamper with it all in all this time , as this would be conclusive evidence"

In fairness, Ivan Lewis is an Ian Austin-level cunt.

QuoteINDEPENDENT Parliamentary candidate Ivan Lewis has urged people in Bury South to vote Tory in a remarkable bid to keep Jeremy Corbyn out of No.10.

In a shock move, with just over one week remaining before the borough goes to the polls, the former Labour MP has said that voting Conservative is the only way to stop Mr Corbyn and appealed to voters to turn their support from him to Tory candidate Christian Wakeford.

It comes after a new Yougov poll suggested Mr Lewis was set to lose the seat he has represented since 1997 — with just three percent of electors saying they will vote for him.

Fine, he can fuck off then.  Makes it easier.

Still though as just an open situation regardless of the current actors, I just find it really odd.  "I am choosing to usurp you; step aside."  "Fair enough."

The previous constituency MP Ivan Lewis was a fucking shitbag. Stabbed Corbyn in the back and literally told people to vote Tory at the last election. He got suspended from Labour for being a sex-pest, and last time I checked, his blog had been re-used for SEOing dodgy financial services companies.

The woman who stood as the Labour MP (because Ivan Lewis was no longer wanted by anyone), Lucy Burke, who lost by 400 votes, should be gutted. She was a proper leftie socialist and entirely the kind of constituency MP I'd be pleased to have. She has said she's just pleased we've got a Labour MP. Although an ex-Tory under a Kier Starmer leadership is a lot less pleasing than a socialist under a Corbyn leadership.

Ivan Lewis can absolutely go and fuck himself. I hope he Googles his name. I am almost certain that Ivan Lewis helped Boris Johnson to become PM so much because he opposed Corbyn's support for Palestine and his support for wealth redistribution. The Palestine thing was always a concern because of the large Jewish demographic in Bury South - not to say they're all single-issue voters, but there are a lot of Orthodox people who may well consider Israel to be the biggest issue. But 400 votes and the sitting MP telling people to vote Tory - it's a Labour heartland too, it'd been Labour for ages. fuck you Ivan Lewis. Boris Johnson is your fault.

Buelligan

I completely agree with you both.  As you say, JD, Lucy Burke (who was the candidate in the 2019 GE for Labour) lost the seat to Wakeford by 400 votes.  Ivan Lewis, who stood against her as an Independent, took over 1300 votes.  It was an obvious stich up of the worst kind and IMO, Starmer's ghouls are now working hard to make sure that no socialist gets on the ticket there, ever.

I didn't know any of this until it was brought up just now, so I am grateful for the information as well as glad he'll seemingly be fucking off.

Nevertheless, I feel like the local Labour constituents choosing their own representative would be more organic than what appears to be allowed here.

This kind of cuckoo process is exactly why New Labour could become what it became.  Welcoming right-wingers into Labour with absolutely nobody batting an eyelid.

JaDanketies

Would be good if Labour stopped standing absolute sex-offender shitbags like Simon Danczuk and Ivan Lewis in what are supposed to be safe seats.

Kinda already doxxing myself here by knowing so much about Bury South and Rochdale, but regardless. I once emailed Christian Wakeford about euthanasia (back when he was a Tory) and he sent me a thoughtful 2-page letter in response where he agreed with me. Which was nice.

Indeed it would - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Woodcock,_Baron_Walney#Sexual_harassment_allegation  Still, nothing seems to stop these cunts' success, this one's now a baron, the government's Independent Adviser on Political Violence and Disruption and the UK's Trade Envoy to Tanzania.  Solid.

you've not mentioned the anti-Semitism...? That was a bigger issue for the large Jewish community in the constituency - not Palestine

Buelligan

I wonder how those people feel, now that Wakeford (who they were urged to vote for) is now in Labour (who they were told to fear).

Quote from: Blinder Data on January 23, 2022, 11:34:04 AMyou've not mentioned the anti-Semitism...? That was a bigger issue for the large Jewish community in the constituency - not Palestine

I still believe that the antisemitism accusations against Corbyn were unreasonable, could be applied to Boris and the Tories just as easily, and were a proxy way to attack him for his support of Palestine. If Corbyn was a staunch supporter of Israel then the antisemitism accusations wouldn't exist (or Lucy Burke would've at least scooped up a few more hundred votes).

I do appreciate that the Jewish Telegraph was inferring that Corbyn would've started a new holocaust and that Jews were in danger if he won. I don't think anyone here on CaB really believes that though? I definitely still view the antisemitism slur as largely entirely due to Corbyn's support of Palestine. I accept that some Labour people said dodgy things, but so do the Tories, and they escaped the slur. I mean, maybe it was because they were lying about him because he was a socialist and they don't like socialists, but 'support of Palestine = antisemetic' already seemed like a commonplace argument before Corbyn appeared. Hell even opposing ritual circumcision is deemed antisemetic by some people.

Kinda worry this argument has been done to death on these boards though
