These are fantastic. Ive been watching Kitboga and RinoaPoison since this thread popped up.
Shes live on Twitch now wasting scammers time. https://www.twitch.tv/rinoapoison

I hate these scammer scumbags, they'd lift 30k from your bank account without even blinking and regard it as a good day.
I used to get them call me when I was working from home and id have them on the line for 45 minutes but soon got tired of it.

Any excuse to share this Jim Browning clip:

Thank you @Pinball for these and Curse you for ruining my YT algorithm.

I liked the CCTV one a lot. Good detective work and interesting to see. The others are OK but deleting files is a bit boring once you have seen it a few times. Will keep going though.

I watched one last night with an Indian born white guy who sounded South African. Quite enjoyed but he reminded me a bit too much  of Brian from Spaced and I worried for his ultimate sanity.

It's the sighing and the phrase "that is where batman lives" which just has me near death.

Quote from: H-O-W-L on February 14, 2022, 03:42:50 AMIndian English uses entirely different vowel sounds afaik.

I tried to confirm this on wikipedia, as it seemed to make sense. But apparently Hindi (/Urdu) speakers do distinguish long i [iː] (as in "reason") from short i [ɪ] (as in "ribbon"):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindustani_phonology#Vowels

"The vowels [ə], [ɪ], [ʊ] are always short in length, while the vowels [aː], [iː], [uː], [eː], [oː], [ɛː], [ɔː] are usually considered long"

Given that their phonology is the same as English in this regard, I also can't explain pronouncing "reason" as r[ɪ]son or "technician" as techn[i:]cian.

Possibly the way particular letter combinations tend to be pronounced in Hindi differs from the way they tend to be pronounced in English, thus the instincts of a native speaker about how to pronounce letters in particular combinations will be different?

The guy I mentioned above is Karl Rock. Probably a bit like me going in Comedy Chat and asking if anyone has heard of this guy Stewart Lee.

He is Brian off Spaced though.

Yeah - if it's not them actually lacking the particular vowel sounds ([iː] and [ɪ]), it could well be that it's an orthographically-based misunderstanding (the combo "ea" might correspond to an "ea" in the official Indian romanization of the traditional script corresponding to  [ɪ]. edit: I can't see any sign of that on the wiki page for "Hunterian transliteration", though.

Also, it might be an error based in false equivalence of cognate words (the Hindu/Urdu word for "technician" might have a long [iː] after the root "techn-", presuming they use a word based on this root like we do). Edit: I discovered that they don't

...or maybe there's something about syllable structure in Hindu phonology prevents a strong [iː] in the first syllable of a word, e.g. the correct English pronunciation "r[iː]son."

I'd love to know - if there is anyone of Indian heritage reading this.

Hello sir I am from Microsoft Phonology Unit I understand you have an issue with Hindi? Let me tell you I can help you with this for a one time payment of 100 USD. If you are happy to go ahead with this please just do one thing for me.

This is not quite the same but I enjoyed watching it. It's correspondence based. For some reason really enjoyed him saying "they have sold ... whatever this number is":

Quote from: Paul Calf on February 11, 2022, 09:07:42 AMPleased to finnd someone else as tragically obsessed with scambaiting vids as I am. I want the scammer screaming at Kitboga's old lady "ARE YOU MAD BITCH? DO NOT REDEEM THE CARDS! WHY ARE YOU REDEEMING IT BITCH? WHY?" to be played at my funeral.

Me too; I've been quite obsessed with Kitboga's livestreams since the lockdowns began 2 years ago.

I think he's my favourite baiter :-)

There are some videos with kitboga sustaining three or more characters at once in an absurd scenario and completely dancing rings around the scammer.  Absolutely incredible improvisation skills.

Seek out his playlist where he wasted 36 hours of a scamming duo's time (plus more considering he was clearly living in their heads rent-free and they were phoning him over and over again throughout the day and he didn't answer).  Rinoa Poison has done the same for 48 hours, I believe.

There's a problem now though where his name and work are getting well known in the scamming community.  Many of them enjoy watching videos by him, Jim Browning et al so they have some awareness of how scambaiters waste scammers' time / access and delete their files and you do get a lot of kitboga's videos now ending with the scammer saying "you're kitboga, right?" and it's quite unsatisfying.

Plus I can't help but feel that after dealing with kitboga, scamming ordinary people will be much easier for them.  Many scammers clearly don't know what to do at first when kitboga calls them - they haven't worked through the script beyond the initial stages.  So hopefully scambaiting is not having the side effect of training them to be better at it.

I think it ends up burning them out of the job, since it already has a high turnover rate.

Does it?  I was of the impression (based on what ex-scammers have said) that they tend to stay with it for years.

It takes a particular type of person arsehole to sit screaming "I WILL FUCK YOUR FAMILY. I WILL SHOOT YOUR HUSBAND IN FRONT OF YOU" at crying old people while stealing their life savings. I think a small core of sociopaths stick with it but most people burn out and leave pretty quickly.

I've seen Kit and Jim Browning flip scammers into defecting and helping them shut down call centres.

Pinball

Trilogy Media has recruited a few people from scam call centres. Understandably, many people feel guilty about that 'job', so aren't hard to recruit. One of these guys - Jaani - has become an important scambaiter himself, even working undercover at call centres:

The worst thing is, the more sociopathic the scammer, the more money they'll get. They can get quite rich that way.

FYI- scam emails can be reported by forwarding them to report@phishing.gov.uk. Text messages that you suspect could be a scam can be forwarded to 7726, a free scam text reporting service.

Apparently there is a spate of DVLA scams currently, and the scammers have even bought ads on Google to their fake sites. It's a shame this sophistication and skill couldn't be applied to legal activities.

Kitboga is easily the best scambaiter. His improv skills are unmatched and is excellent at creating these weird yet somehow believable lives for his characters. He also doesn't come across nasty... there are a couple of scambaiters that have racist undertones.

One of my biggest laughs, as in crying tears laughing, in recent years was the Kitboga call where the guy sent him an obvious stock image of an office pretending it was his real office and employees. Kit then made him go through and name each of the employees.

Yeah there are so many absurd scenarios he'll put himself in whilst in character but the fraudsters are so laser-focussed on the scripted scam it creates magic.

There's a newer one where he pretends that a security guard has got the old guy trapped in the toilet of a Target or whatever with and the scammers basically like "before you get arrested give me the gift card number".

It's beautiful.

I never used to like Kitboga's stuff because I was watching the unedited streams, and I got irritated with how he constantly interrupted himself by thanking the people giving him bits and donations etc. I remember the first twenty minutes of one was just that sort of thing, on and on and on. His YouTube videos are much better, to be honest.

Famous Mortimer

I go through periods of devouring them, I love that they can piss off fraudsters to such an extent.

But, like was said previously, it would be much nicer if the "west" just said "actually do something to stop these scammers" and then forced them to do something.

Yes, Kitboga basically makes great improv comedy, all in a good cause :-)

"What, barnhub? Did they order some goats or something?"
"No, porn, Sir".

My favourite bit- after the fake over-payment Rinoa starts shopping for makeup on Amazon, which the scammer is watching. "Thank you so much", she says.
