Maybe if they carpeted the roads that would make them expensive enough?

Brian Freeze

Quote from: Brian Freeze on June 17, 2022, 01:03:21 PMThere's supposed to be one affecting the M62, M18 and M1 all in one go on saturday.

Nothing happened. It was fine.

Car meet up group OSC - Oxfordshire Street Cruisers are planning a fuel protest in Oxfordshire according to the local paper, most likely on July 4th, it looks like they are planning to block main HGV routes.

Being in a car meet up group does sound a bit wanky to be honest.

Quote from: Sebastian Cobb on June 17, 2022, 01:07:42 PMHas there been any studies on whether cargo bikes push the cost of distribution up significantly? I'm going to assume that it probably does because, well, one van can hold quite a few cargo bikes full.

I'm intrigued, it sounds good but if the costs are inflationary it might well push people into driving to the shops again which unless you're doing huge loads is generally considered worse than getting things delivered.
The cargo bike proponents claim a lot of delivery vehicles are nearly empty most of the time, which doesn't seem true of the big couriers but might apply to some businesses.

They also talk about using cargo bikes for "the last mile" which means lots more distribution centres, no more filling a van 30 miles away and driving to your door. This will also create a lot of jobs unloading trucks and loading bikes, but probably needs a lot of land too.

We probably need some organisation or streets will just be full of delivery vehicles. Not sure what the solution is though.

Or people could buy a lot less shit

Making more space for shopping/luggage on buses might help. For non car owners, it's a massive pain in the arse to get shopping home if you don't live within walking distance of the supermarket. Some buses have put metal containers with Metro newspapers in in part of the luggage space further reducing the space for shopping.

Aaaah, living in a capitalist society, where doing the right thing fucks everybody over. Brill, init?

Self driving electric vehicles will do all freight transport (and all taxi services too) very soon. No more fuel worries because no more jobs. So hello to mass unemployment.

If you're talking about them having no driver or supervisor on board then I don't think it will be very soon. That's a world away and quite reassuring if I'm stuck behind one.

Already started in SF.

There's quite a few edge cases autonomous vehicles aren't really able to cope with yet, and a big worry is that they get good enough people start forgetting how to drive; pretty much the worst-scenario is having an an autonomous system that panics and hands control back to a driver, but it only does it on average every 10 or 50 thousand miles, because you've forgotten how to drive, the air equivalent of this was partially responsible for the Air France Flight 447 crash.

However, in stop-start low-speed traffic and the like I'd be inclined to trust an autonomous system more than a bored human driver.

As for dumping control back to drivers, it looks like old Musky has been doing that for liability reasons:

Cue slow zoom in on the reporter's face as The Sound of Silence plays.

First day of the fuel protests with go slows in Wales, Essex and Devon.

Not sure when further protests are planned.

shoulders

Hadn't expected for the fuel protestors to pull over to the hard shoulder and start fisting each other!

shiftwork2

Ah, using the already-acquired skill lay-by dog session.  That would certainly fuel a protest.

Fambo Number Mive

At least 13 protesters arrested for driving too slowly

What pisses me off is that despite all the tech bells and whistles modern cars have nowadays the IC engine has been used now for over 150 years and they still can't make yer average family car do more than 50-60 mpg. In fact most manufacturers don't even seem to regard economy as having any marketing value.

They should be doing 100mpg. No, 200 mpg. 300 MPG.

Brian May should be making cars more fuel efficient until he cannot stand up.

dissolute ocelot

They should triple the price of fuel in London and use it to subsidise for everyone else.

Or make ethanol out of seaweed.

Or make cars out of lightweight, fuel-efficient cardboard.

That's the trouble with (who the fuck is the transport secretary?) - no imagination.

Buelligan

All well and good.  All well and good.  But WON'T ANYBODY THINK OF THE TINY BABIES DYING IN AMBULANCES UP AND DOWN THIS SOVEREIGN LAND THAT ARMY MEN ACTUALLY LITERALLY FUCKIN DIED FOR JUST BECAUSE OF THIS SELFISHNESS?  No one seems to be saying it.  Why?

Fambo Number Mive

Giving advance notice of the protests probably helped reduce public annoyance, and of course the right wing media is on the side of the fuel protests.

Meanwhile, in the Netherlands...

https://www.independent.co.uk/climate-change/news/dutch-farmers-emissions-environment-protests-b2115246.html
QuoteArmed with colourful tractors and trucks, Dutch farmers on Monday continued their battle against the government's proposal to slash emissions of pollutants such as nitrogen oxide and ammonia by 50 percent.

...

One video posted on social media reportedly showed farmers using manure to barricade the Dutch-German border, while others deposited the substance in front of government buildings. Videos shared online last week also showed angry farmers targeting police vehicles with wooden sledgehammers.

Ports were also reportedly being blockaded by fishermen, while staff at Schiphol airport urged travellers to use public transport to get to its terminals amid fears that the blockade would target airports.

It is possible that the stircrazy pandemic, along with EndTimes climate crisis and impending collapse of the Church of Money is heralding sweet sweet anarchy?  EVEN FOR THE DUTCH?

Zero Gravitas

Outside of the Hollands they're all mentalists anyway.

Earlier this year there were fuel protests across Europe. Striking truckers in Spain blocking roads with burning tyres; French farmers doing a go-slow and barricading roads with burning pallets; Greek protestors blocking roads and "holding up vegetables and black flags"; even in Germany truckers honking their horns.
