I suppose if you do take those Swift albums into account then in terms of influence it would have to be The National or Bon Iver. Popular culture is too fragmented for a guitar group to get properly hearing-them-everywhere big anymore though, I think, possibly? In terms of long-running bands that critics love maybe Wilco or Spoon would be vaguely adjacent to what REM were

Continuing with the Taylor Swift link maybe Jack Antonoff? Swift does very little for me but his work with Lorde and Lana Del Rey was pretty great. Norman Fucking Rockwell would come close to the thread requirements in particular?
