Tinto Brass

The F Bomb

I've recently been enjoying what can best be described as Euro erotic arthouse, stuff like Walerian Borowczyk and Jean Rollin, Alain Robbe-Grillet, and I'd also extend to certain gialli. Basically, stuff that flickers and flirts with the pornographic but stops somewhere short due to the director's aesthetic affectations and conceptual fixations. Having exhausted all of the above, one reaches Tinto Brass.

I've only seen two of his films, they seem ludicrous and arguably offensive, but also irresistibly shot. I've seen Cheeky which is about a blonde Russian woman's arse and The Key which is about a brunette Italian woman's arse. There's some sort of thin contextualisation whereby Brass philsophises about women's pursuit of pleasure and the ecstasy of infidelity. It's hard to say that Brass is being entirely serious with his treatise but I gather it's a recurring theme. They are also quite joyfully stupid and beautiful films, while being pretty boring and insulting to both men and women.

I'm not entirely sure I'll persist but I have more tolerance for artsy pretty garbage than for gory horror, etc. Are any of his films more worth my time than the two named above? I'm tempted to get the upcoming 4Ks of All Ladies Do It (about female infidelity) and Frivolous Lola (about pre-marital female infidelity). What do you reckon?

And is Jess Franco any good?

Caligula is worth a butch for reputation alone. Not sure it has much to do with his later work but it is in gloriously poor taste throughout. Salon Kitty is good fun too, think Cabaret with bad dubbing and plenty of eurosleaze. Complete with musical numbers.

Jess Franco lies somewhere between really really bad and genius, usually both with very little in between. Vampiros Lesbos is a good starting point, but his work has several pretty distinct eras, of which you will probably have your preferences. Everyone agrees that his 00s shot on digital video stuff is garbage though, so that's probably for 'completists'/the insane only (I have most of them).

Caligula is getting a new remaster soon, 4K release from some Aussie label, can't remember whether Umbrella or Imprint but I'll keep an eye out for it.

Cheeky makes me cum really hard

Mister Six

I picked up a copy of All Ladies Do It along with several other saucy softcore films (and, oddly, Harmony Korine's Ken Park) on a DVD from a travelling grotmonger when I lived in Dubai. I remember finding it quite fun, and the main actress stunningly gorgeous. Can't recall much else about it now though (blasted those neurons to oblivion with too much wanking).

And thanks also @thenoise for the JF suggestions.

that scene where she's dancing around the apartment getting dressed, fucking hell

Glebe

George White

Deadly Sweet I really like, insane pop-art swinging London giallo with cameos by Dave Prowse and Janet Street Porter.

Frivolous Lola also stars Patrick Mower, just before he revived his career via Emmerdale.

I can say that I watched Frivolous Lola as my roommate at Uni had it on DVD.
