Subtle Mocking

Neomod

Also: Sith Lord Gary Barlow[nb]Oh ok, OBE[/nb]

George Oscar Bluth II

Oh Armando. I'm a bit disappointed in you really.

Fucker!!!!

None of what he has done is funny anymore.

Absolute FUCKERRRR!!!!

HATE HIM SO BAD RIGHT NOW

biggytitbo

So he's taking it then?

I'm not sure accepting an OBE is compatible with being a satirist.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

Hopefully he'll mount a stinging satirical attack on his OBE.

Well I'll join his Mum in saying "Well done Armando, and an extra blob of icecream for your pudding!"

Remember, it's just a bit of fun. Although I will admit that Gary Barlow also getting one does give the OBE a far worse name than hitherto. But that's not Armando's fault.

Just for the record, it unequivocally is. I think you're getting 'satirist' mixed up with 'socialist'.

His WMD one was even better!

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

This is making me like Armando more than I already did. What an odd morning.

Just added it. So glad I woke up early enough to catch this in real-time. Fucking smashing, and no Ross Noble to bugger it up with shit animal whimsy.

But that's just bollocks. Ali C never pretended to be anything other than a politician. His job was getting Labour elected, which he did very well.
Iannucci might as well criticise him for not making decent TV shows. What's Iannucci saying, he's arguably less establishment than Campbell? Well fucking done Armando.

Sir James Corden, for services to Paul Potts.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-east-wales-18454627

"It has been reported filming will start after Corden's wedding to Julian Clary in September."

I swear to God that's what I thought it said.

Sorry to harp on about this, but I've just realised, FWIW, that accepting an honour is one of the most important things any satirist could do really – because, for all that we all know that Honours are ephemeral bits of silliness, having one does obviously convey a whole new level of authority in the eyes of many people, and therefore surely INTENSIFIES any satirical point they make. It's one thing to have an anarchist hurling brickbats at the government, but in a lot of ways it's more remarkable to have a card-carrying respectable figure making attacks.

Accepting an honour – even an OBE – makes a satirist more powerful, not less.

thepuffpastryhangman

I think Campbell set up Iannucci to say "WMD". He openly invited it and is wrapping Armando 'round his pinkie.

biggytitbo

Mmm can't say I'm convinced by that Jem, but then I can't be having the same opinion about anything as Alistair Campbell either.

I suppose turning down an honour does come across as a bit self important, if he accepts it but also takes the piss out of it might be good.

We're through the looking glass here, people.

thepuffpastryhangman

Weren't the troops invading Iraq wearing the same flag Iannucci will be bowing too? And don't the government advise the Queen re: honours, so basically it's the Tories honouring him? Or is there 'a waiting list' and it's just his turn now?

Hahahaha.

Come on. You sound much more like you're trying to convince yourself. I love loads of Iannucci's work but accepting an OBE is embarrassing. It will change the way I think of him.

It's nice to have puffy's bull-headed cryptic attacks on one's own side for a change.

Well I am trying to think of a counter-argument, but none of them hold any water. It's like the difference between a school pupil throwing a stink bomb, and a teacher doing it. The latter seems definitively more shocking to me.

There is definitively no such thing as 'The Establishment' in any meaningful sense, it's not a specific club or anything, it's just an empty rhetorical term. But that said, it stands to reason that the more 'respectable' a satirist is, the wider approval they have among the public and those in power, the more influence and scope their work must then have.

So when Ali C used the phrase "three little letters" you're suggesting one of the most skilled media manipulators of all time hadn't considered the fact that "three little letters" are endlessly associated with himself and he wasn't prompting that response?

Though, to be fair, I've never noticed you making perceptive remarks, so well done on the consistency front at least.

biggytitbo

I'd prefer him to remain the outsider though, accepting the honour is like giving legitimacy to the same system his role is to attack.

No. Campbell isn't that quick. Did you see him on HIGNFY? Have you ever known him to make a genuinely witty remark? To suggest that he's playing some sort of wily straightman role here is absurd.

Why would he set himself up to look like an idiot?

Because he's an idiot, according to Puffy's twisted logic.

Like he did tuther week on HIGNFY? Because self-deprecation is his new angle. When folks have hurled "WMD" at him a thousand times it loses its effect. It's the 'throw enough shit and some of it'll stick' in reverse. It simply waters down the reality of a million+ dying. He's Alistair Campbell FFS.

EDIT - The best career move is to show a fallible, human side, and that's what he was doing there, making, or rather inviting, a joke at his own expense.

EDIT 2 - He used the phrase "three little letters". Alistair Campbell + "three little letters" = ? Come on...
