Hmm...

Right

It was £35 for a 12 and £75 for a 17 in 2014 (when I got my bottles)
Hence why I am advising to stay well away from Japanese whisky in the current climate

It was a Japanese friend at university who got me into drinking single malt whiskey. Funny thing was I then went home one holidays and mentioned it to my dad who, prior to that, hadn't liked the idea of me drinking at all. But as soon as he heard I liked single malts he started buying them in for us both to try...

Got a Suntory on Clubcard. Horrible. Just thin. Nothing.

Caution: Tories tend to evaporate if exposed to direct sunlight.

I'm a no ice prick. I like spirits straight and undiluted.

Sorry about that.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Ice (1 x cube)  in whisky if I want the drink to last a bit longer and am having an uncomplicated one.

Nearly always order it or serve it neat/straight up/on its own, whatever you prefer to say.

Wouldn't ever have it just diluted with tapwater, as some do.

If you want to go for it with something pretty special, and don't be mixing it, go for High West Rendezvous Rye. It's pretty much their flagship whiskey and they specialise in rye. The Double Rye and pretty much anything High West is top quality, but Rendezvous is their pinnacle. Exceptional depth of flavour. More expensive than five years or so ago when you could pick it up for less than forty quid but I'm probably due a bottle, just from how I feel talking about it.

I'd be a bit wary of recommending High West these days. Both RRye and DRye were amazing, but since they ran out of their extra-aged Barton stocks and they're now cutting the younger MGP rye with High West's own, even younger rye, the taste profile has shifted to the detriment of both expressions. Definitely see if you can try a sample of the newer releases first.

(I'll throw in a recommendation for Four Roses Single Barrel, which from what I remember isn't too hard to obtain in the UK; their Limited Editions are also surprisingly easier to get in the UK than in the US and can easily sit alongside BTAC)

Ah, cheers. Not had any 'new' HW stuff because my mate still has about a dozen bottles of RV from an Amazon offer five years ago. That's the main reason I haven't bought any in ages! Thanks for saving me a few quid there.

I do really like FRSB, good call. I wouldn't say their LE stuff stands up to the BTAC personally but I've only had 2014 and 2015. The regular FRSB is brilliant VFM and really consistent.

I've got a bottle of Talisker Storm about two-thirds full in my cupboard It's one of those novelty expressions that were created to plug the gaqp left by rampant demand from Asia. I don't like it much. It's been there for about six months.

The standard 12-year-old Jura that I picked up because it looked reasonably priced (£24) is half-gone inside a month though.

I love island malts.

Is it rye though? looks to be just bourbon

I like whisky but struggle to differentiate between the different types. Should do a taste test or something but try to only have one a night. Got a bottle of 16 year old Lagavulin, an Auchentoshan Three Wood and a Singleton in the cupboard but generally just have whatever Islay or Speyside's around the £25 mark in the supermarket or get the Lidl own brand single. Think the supermarket ones are generally the brand versions in own brand packaging, aren't they?

people who put ice in good whisky are subhuman scum

Has anyone tried that Hawkshead English whisky? I had some English whisky when I was in Alnmouth about three years ago and it was quite nice.

Brian Freeze

I've been treating myself to a single malt these last couple of months as its more economical than buying piss as I drink the piss quicker cos its cheaper.

Sainsbobs had Talisker Skye for 25 pounds up until recently and that were quite tasty, almost salty and had the advantage of Mrs F not liking it either.

What are the whiskey experts of CaB's view on Rittenhouse Rye?

Also what about that Michter's too?

Both very nice but rye whiskey is a particular flavour and not something that everyone likes. I'd definitely recommend the Bulleit Rye first, because it's as classic and straight down the line as it gets with the rye flavours. From there, you've got a great springboard. It's also on offer fairly regularly and you can probably get it for half the price of the Michter's. If I misunderstood and you've already tried and enjoyed rye, both of them are worth a go, albeit Michter is better. Rittenhouse is another quality stalwart, kind of like Bulleit.

Yep I'm sure I've tried rye before; it's unlikely I wouldn't like it I'm pretty broad in my tastes - my only issue is being a GERD sufferer I prefer smoother less acidic stuff.  That is why if something is smoother and more expensive it is more economical for me to go with that.  I think my main concern with buying the Bulleit though is that will be my bottle of rye for a couple of years as I don't drink at home very regularly.

Btw I've just ordered a bottle of Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky and despite none of you recommending it, and me actually  asking for advice about rye for several posts, if it is shit I'm holding you all responsible, especially Chedney.
